Apocalypse Revealed (Rogers translation 2007) 636

636. 14:11 "He shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. And the smoke of their torment will ascend forever and ever." This symbolizes their love of self and the world and the ensuing lusts, and stemming from these a conceit in their own intelligence, and torment in hell because of them.

Fire symbolizes a love of self and love of the world (no. 494). Brimstone symbolizes the lusts springing from these two loves (no. 452). And because all the torment in hell occurs in consequence of these three elements, therefore we are told, "he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone, and the smoke of their torment will ascend forever and ever." The verse says in the presence of the angels and the Lamb, because these loves are opposed to Divine truth and to the Lord who embodies the Word. For angels symbolize Divine truths, being the recipients of them (no. 170); and the Lamb symbolizes the Lord in respect to His Divine humanity and at the same time in respect to the Word (no. 595).

That torments in hell occur in consequence of the aforesaid loves, and that people caught up in a faith divorced from charity experience them, may be seen in nos. 421, 502, 591 above.

Apocalypse Revealed (Coulson translation 1970) 636

636. 'And shall be tormented with fire and sulphur before the holy angels and the Lamb, [verse 11] and the smoke of their torment shall go up for ages of ages' signifies the love of self and the world and the derivative lusts, and the pride of self-intelligence derived therefrom, and torment in hell as the result thereof. By 'fire' is signified the love of self and the world (494); by 'sulphur are signified the lusts derived from those two loves (452); and because all the torment in hell is the result of these three it is therefore said. 'shall be tormented with fire and sulphur, and the smoke of their torment shall go up for ages of ages.' It is said 'before the angels and the Lamb' because these loves are against Divine Truths and against the Lord Who is the Word; for by 'angels' are signified Divine Truths because they are the recipients (170), and by 'the Lamb' is signified the Lord as to the Divine Human and at the same time the Word (595). That the torments in hell are the result of the above-mentioned loves, and that those who are in faith separated from charity are in them, may be seen above (421, 502, 597 1)

Footnotes:

1. 597 seems incorrect. Perhaps 591 or 537 was intended.

Apocalypse Revealed (Whitehead translation 1928) 636

636. And he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone before the holy angels and before the Lamb. Verse 11. And the smoke of their torment shall go up for ages of ages, signifies self-love and the love of the world and their derivative lusts, and the pride of their own intelligence from these, and torment in hell from them. By "fire" is signified the love of self and of the world, (494); by "brimstone" are signified lusts derived from those two loves, (452); and since all torment in hell results from these three, therefore it is said, "shall be tormented with fire and brimstone, and the smoke of their torment shall go up for ages of ages." It is said, "before the angels and the Lamb," because these loves are contrary to Divine truths and contrary to the Lord, who is the Word; for by "angels" Divine truths are signified, because they are recipients, (170), and by "the Lamb" is signified the Lord as to the Divine Human and also as to the Word, (595). That torments in hell proceed from the above-mentioned loves, and that they are in those loves who are in faith separated from charity, may be seen above, (421, 502, 591).

Apocalypsis Revelata 636 (original Latin 1766)

636. "Et cruciabitur igne et sulphure coram sanctis Angelis et Agno," (Vers. 11.)
