  5480.“哭了一场”表怜悯。这从“哭”的含义清楚可知,“哭”在论及此处由“约瑟”来代表的主时,是指怜悯。众所周知,哭泣是悲伤和爱的表达,因而是怜悯或同情的表达,因为怜悯就是爱在悲伤。因此,神性之爱被称为怜悯,因为人类本身陷入地狱;当人在自己里面认识到这一点时,他就会祈求怜悯。“哭”在内义上也有怜悯的意思,故在圣言中有时论及耶和华或主,如以赛亚书:
  我要为西比玛的葡萄树哀哭,与雅谢人哀哭一样。希实本、以利亚利啊,我要以眼泪浇灌你。(以赛亚书16:9
  耶利米书:
  耶和华说,我知道摩押的忿怒是并无根据。因此,我要为摩押哀号,为全摩押呼喊;西比玛的葡萄树啊,我为你哀哭,甚于雅谢人哀哭。(耶利米书48:30-32
  “摩押”表示那些处于属世良善,允许自己被引入歧途的人;并且一旦被引入歧途,他们就会玷污良善(参看2468节);“哀号”、“呼喊”和“哀哭”表示怜悯和悲伤的感觉。在路加福音也一样:
  临近的时候,耶稣看见那城(即耶路撒冷),就为它哭泣。(路加福音19:41
  耶稣为之哭泣,或怜悯和悲伤的耶路撒冷不仅仅是实际的耶路撒冷城,还是教会,教会的末日;在内义上是指不再有任何仁,因而不再有任何信的时候;因此,祂哭泣是由于怜悯和悲伤。“耶路撒冷”是指教会(参看21173654节)。

5480. And wept. That this signifies mercy, is evident from the signification of "weeping," when predicated of the Lord, who is here represented by Joseph, as being to be merciful. That weeping is expressive of grief and love, is well known, and consequently it is expressive of mercy or pity, for mercy is love grieving. The Divine love is therefore called mercy, because the human race is of itself in hell; and when man perceives this in himself, he implores mercy. As weeping is also mercy in the internal sense, therefore in the Word "weeping" is sometimes predicated of Jehovah or the Lord, as in Isaiah:

I will weep with weeping for Jazer, the vine of Sibmah; I will water thee with My tears, O Heshbon and Elealeh (Isa. 16:9); and in Jeremiah:

I know the indignation of Moab, saith Jehovah, that it is not right. Therefore will I howl over Moab, and I will cry out for all Moab; above the weeping of Jazer will I weep for thee, O vine of Sibmah (Jer. 48:30-32);

"Moab" denotes those who are in natural good and suffer themselves to be led astray, and when led astray adulterate goods (see n. 2468); "to howl," "cry out," and "weep over," it denotes pitying and grieving. Likewise in Luke:

When Jesus drew nigh He beheld the city, and wept over it (Luke 19:41);

Jerusalem, over which Jesus wept, or which He pitied and over which He grieved, was not only the city Jerusalem, but also the church, the last day of which; when there would no longer be any charity nor consequently any faith, is meant in the internal sense; and hence from pity and grief He wept. 5480. 'And wept' means mercy. This is clear from the meaning of 'weeping', when used in reference to the Lord, who is represented here by 'Joseph', as showing mercy. It is well known that weeping is an expression of grief and love; it is consequently an expression of mercy since mercy is love that is grieving. Divine love therefore is called mercy because left by itself the human race is in hell; and when a person recognizes within himself that this is the case he prays for mercy. Since in the internal sense 'weeping' also implies mercy, there are many occasions in the Word when Jehovah or the Lord is spoken of as weeping, as in Isaiah,

I shall weep with weeping over Jazer, the vine of Sibmah. I will seek you with My tears, O Heshbon and Elealeh. Isa 16:9.

And in Jeremiah,

I know, says Jehovah, the indignation of Moab, that he is not right. Therefore I will howl over Moab and will cry out because of the whole of Moab. Above the weeping of Jazer I will weep because of you, O vine of Sibmah. Jer 48:30-32.

'Moab' stands for those who are governed by natural good and allow themselves to be led astray; and once led astray they adulterate what is good, 2468. 'Howling, crying out, and weeping over Moab' stands for feelings of mercy and grief. Similarly in Luke,

As He drew near, Jesus saw the city and wept over it. Luke 19:41.

The Jerusalem over which Jesus wept, that is, for which He had feelings of mercy and grief, was not only the actual city of Jerusalem but also the Church, whose last day, when there will no longer be any charity or consequently any faith, is meant in the internal sense. His feelings of mercy and grief led Him to weep. As regards 'Jerusalem' being the Church, see 2117, 3654.
