For example, the church father Origen (around 185 to around 254) points out in his On First Principles 2.10.3-6 [Origen 1966, 140-144] that since the spiritual body is incorruptible (see 1 Corinthians 15:42, 52), the torments of hell mentioned in the Bible must be figurative, meaning torments of conscience rather than physical pains.
