184. And the seven stars. That this signifies from whom are all the knowledges of truth and good, is evident from the signification of seven, as being what is full, and all things (concerning which see above, n. 20, 24), and from the signification of stars, as being the knowledges (cognitiones) of truth and good (concerning which see also above, n. 72). The reason why it is said to the angel of the church in Sardis, these things saith he that hath the seven spirits of God, and the seven stars, is, that the subject treated of is those within the church whose life is moral but not spiritual, inasmuch as they lightly esteem the knowledges of spiritual things, and thence Intelligence and wisdom. For by the seven spirits of God are signified all the truths of heaven and the church; and by the seven stars the knowledges of truth and good, by which two things all intelligence and wisdom are acquired. To the angel of each church something concerning the Lord is premised, which indicates the subject treated of, as may be seen above (n. 113).

It is said to the angel of this church, "These things saith He that hath the seven spirits of God, and the seven stars," because those within the church who are living a moral but not a spiritual life, because they have little regard for the knowledges of spiritual things and thence for intelligence and wisdom, are here treated of; for "the seven spirits of God" signify all the truths of heaven and of the church, and "the seven stars" the knowledges of truth and good; and through these two come all intelligence and wisdom. To the angel of each church is premised something respecting the Lord, which indicates what is treated of (See above, n. 113).

"Et septem stellas." - Quod significet a quo omnes cognitiones veri et boni, constat ex significatione "septem", quod sint plenum et omnia (de qua supra, n. 20, 24); et a significatione "stellarum", quod sint cognitiones veri et boni (de qua etiam supra, n. 72). Quod dicatur ad Angelum hujus Ecclesiae, "Haec dicit habens septem spiritus Dei et septem stellas", est quia de illis intra ecclesiam agitur qui vitam moralem agunt sed non spiritualem, quia parvi pendunt cognitiones spiritualium, et inde intelligentiam et sapientiam; per "septem, enim "spiritus" significantur omnia vera caeli et ecclesiae, et per "septem stellas" cognitiones veri et boni, per quae duo omnis intelligentia et sapientia. Ad Angelum cujusvis Ecclesiae praemittitur de Domino aliquid, quod rem, de qua agitur, indicat (videatur supra, n. 113).
