Apocalypse Revealed (Rogers translation 2007) 654

654. For one thousand six hundred furlongs. This symbolically means, being nothing but the falsities accompanying evil.

Furlongs have the same symbolism as paths, because furlongs are the measurements of paths, and paths symbolize truths that lead somewhere (no. 176), and in an opposite sense, falsities. And one thousand six hundred symbolizes evils in their whole entirety; for 1600 has the same symbolic meaning as 16, and 16 the same symbolic meaning as 4, and four is predicated of goodness and of the union of goodness and truth (no. 322), so that in an opposite sense it is predicated of evil and of the conjunction of evil and falsities, as in the present instance. Moreover, because the number's being multiplied by 100 does not take away its symbolic meaning, but heightens it, therefore one thousand six hundred furlongs symbolizes nothing but the falsity of evil.

That all numbers in the Word have some symbolic meaning may be seen in no. 348 above, and that a number symbolizes the character of a thing in nos. 448, 608-610.

Apocalypse Revealed (Coulson translation 1970) 654

654. 'For a thousand six hundred stadia' 1signifies nothing but untruths of evil. By 'stadia' the like is signified as by 'ways,' because stadia are measurements of ways, and by 'ways' are signified truths leading (Arcana Coelestia 176), and in the opposite sense untruths likewise; and by 'a thousand six hundred' are signified evils in a whole complex. For by 1600 the like is signified as by 16, and by 16 the like as by 4, because 16 arises out of 4 multiplied into itself. And 'four' is said of good and of a conjunction of good and truth (322). Consequently in the opposite sense it is said of evil and of a conjunction of evil and untruth, as here. And as the multiplication of a number by 100 does not take away the signification, but exalts it, therefore by 'for a thousand six hundred stadia' is signified nothing but untruth of evil. That all the numbers in the Word signify things may be seen above (348), and that a number signifies the quality of a thing (448, 608-610).

1. Plural of stadium=approx. one-eighth of a mile.

Apocalypse Revealed (Whitehead translation 1928) 654

654. For a thousand six hundred stadia, signifies mere falsities of evil. By "stadia" the like is signified as by "ways," because stadia are measured ways, and by "ways" are signified leading truths, (176), and, in the opposite sense, leading falsities; and by "a thousand six hundred" are signified evils in the whole complex, for by "a thousand six hundred" the like is signified as by sixteen, and by sixteen the like as by four, because sixteen is the product of four multiplied by itself, and four is said of good and of the conjunction of good and truth, (322), hence, in the opposite sense, of evil and the conjunction of evil and falsity, as here; and as the multiplying of any number by a hundred does not take away its signification, but exalts it, therefore, "for a thousand six hundred stadia" signifies mere falsities of evil. That all numbers in the Word signify things, may be seen above, (348), and that a number signifies the quality of a thing, (448, 608-610).
