Conjugial Love #117 (Chadwick (1996))

117. (i) In the Word the Lord is called bridegroom and husband, and the church is called bride and wife. The linking of the Lord with the church, and the reciprocal linking of the church with the Lord, is called a marriage.

It is evident from the following passages that in the Word the Lord is called bridegroom and husband, and the church bride and wife.

He who has the bride is the bridegroom; but the bridegroom's friend is he who stands and listens to him, and rejoices with joy at the bridegroom's voice. John 3:29.

This was said about the Lord by John the Baptist.

Jesus said, So long as the bridegroom is with them, the children of the wedding cannot fast. 1The days are coming when the bridegroom will be taken from them; then they will fast. Matthew 9:15; Mark 2:19-20; Luke 5:34-35.

I saw the holy city, the New Jerusalem, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. Revelation 21:2.

The New Jerusalem means the Lord's new church (see Apocalypse Revealed 880-881).

The angel said to John, Come and I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb. And he showed him the holy city of Jerusalem. Revelation 21:9-10.

The time of the wedding of the Lamb has come, and his wife has prepared herself. Blessed are those who are summoned to the wedding feast of the Lamb. Revelation 19:7, 9.

The bridegroom, who was met on the way by the five maidens who were ready, and with whom they went into the wedding (Matthew 25:1-10), means the Lord, as is plain from verse 13 where it is said:

Keep awake therefore, because you do not know the day or the hour at which the Son of Man is to come. [Matthew 25:13]

There are besides many passages in the Prophets. Isaiah 9:6.

You, Jehovah, are our Father, your name is the Redeemer from of old. Isaiah 63:16.

Jesus said, He who sees me sees the Father who sent me. John 12:45.

If you knew me, you knew also my father; and henceforth you have known and seen him. John 14:7.

Philip said, Show us the Father. Jesus said to him, He who has seen me has seen the Father; how then can you say, Show us the Father? John 14:8-9.

Jesus said, the Father and I are one. John 10:30.

All that the Father has is mine. John 16:15; 17:10.

The Father is in me, and I am in the Father. John 10:38; 14:10-11, 20.

Conjugial Love #117 (Rogers (1995))

117. 1. In the Word, the Lord is called a Bridegroom and Husband, and the church a bride and wife; and the conjunction of the Lord with the church and the reciprocal conjunction of the church with the Lord is called a marriage. It can be seen from the following passages that the Lord is called a Bridegroom and Husband in the Word, and the church a bride and wife:

He who has the bride is the Bridegroom; but the friend of the Bridegroom (is the one) who stands and hears Him, (who) rejoices greatly because of the Bridegroom's voice. (John 3:29)

(John the Baptist said this in reference to the Lord.)

...Jesus said..., "...As long as the Bridegroom is with them, the wedding guests cannot fast.... The days will come when the Bridegroom will be taken away from them; ...then they will fast." (Matthew 9:15, Mark 2:19-20, Luke 5:34-35)

...I...saw the holy city, New Jerusalem..., prepared as a bride adorned for her Husband. (Revelation 21:2)

(That the Lord's New Church is meant by the New Jerusalem, see The Apocalypse Revealed, nos. 880, 881.)

(An angel said to John,) "Come, and I will show you the bride, the Lamb's wife." (And he showed him) the city, the holy Jerusalem.... (Revelation 21:9-10)

(The time for) the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His wife has made herself ready.... Blessed are those who are called to the marriage supper of the Lamb. (Revelation 19:7,9)

The bridegroom that the five ready virgins went out to meet, with whom they went in to the wedding (Matthew 25:1-10), means the Lord, as is plain from the thirteenth verse, where He says:

Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour in which the Son of Man will come. (Matthew 25:13)

Further references may be found in many passages in the Prophets as well.

Love in Marriage #117 (Gladish (1992))

117. 1. The Word calls the Lord a Bridegroom and Husband and the church a bride and wife, and it says the Lord's union with the church and the reciprocal union of the church with the Lord is a marriage. The following passages establish the fact that in the Word the Lord is called Bridegroom and Husband and the church bride and wife:

He who has the bride is the Bridegroom. But the friend of the Bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices with great joy at the Bridegroom's voice. (John 3:29)

John the Baptist said this about the Lord.

Jesus said, So long as the Bridegroom is with them the sons of the wedding cannot fast. The days will come when the Bridegroom will be taken away from them. Then they will fast. (Matt.

9:15; Mark 2:19,20: Luke 5:34-35)

I Saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, prepared as a bride adorned for her Husband. (Revelation 21:2)

Apocalypse Revealed 880-881) shows that "New Jerusalem" refers to the Lord's new church.

The angel said to John, "Come and I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb." And he showed him the holy city, Jerusalem. (Revelation 21:9-10)

The time for the Lamb's wedding has come, and His wife has made herself ready. Blessed are they who are called to the marriage supper of the Lamb. (Revelation 19:7, 9)

The Lord is meant by the bridegroom whom the five prepared virgins met on his way and with whom they entered the marriage (Matthew 25:1-10). This is clear from 5:13, where it says:

Watch, therefore, for you do not know the day nor the hour when the Son of Man will come.

Also in many passages in the Prophets.

Conjugial Love #117 (Acton (1953))

117. I. THAT IN THE WORD, THE LORD IS CALLED BRIDEGROOM AND HUSBAND, AND THE CHURCH BRIDE AND WIFE; AND THAT THE CONJUNCTION OF THE LORD WITH THE CHURCH, AND THE RECIPROCAL CONJUNCTION OF THE CHURCH WITH THE LORD, IS CALLED MARRIAGE. That in the Word, the Lord is called Bridegroom and Husband, and the Church Bride and Wife, may be seen from the following passages:

He that hath the BRIDE is the BRIDEGROOM; but the friend of the BRIDEGROOM, who standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth with joy because of the BRIDEGROOM'S voice. John 3:29.

These words were spoken by John the Baptist concerning the Lord.

Jesus said, So long as the BRIDEGROOM is with them, the SONS OF THE NUPTIALS cannot fast; the days will come when the BRIDEGROOM shall be taken away from them, then will they fast. Matthew 9:15; Mark 2:19, 20; Luke 5:34, 35.

I saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, prepared as a BRIDE adorned for her HUSBAND. Revelation 21:2.

That by the New Jerusalem is meant the Lord's New Church may be seen in THE APOCALYPSE REVEALED, nos. 880, 881. The angel said to John:

Come and I will show thee THE BRIDE, THE LAMB'S WIFE. And He showed him the holy city, Jerusalem. Revelation 21:9, 10.

The time for the MARRIAGE OF THE LAMB, is come, and HIS WIFE hath made herself ready. Blessed are they which are called to THE MARRIAGE SUPPER OF THE LAMB. Revelation 19:7, 9.

By the Bridegroom whom the five virgins who were ready went forth to meet, and with whom they entered into the wedding (Matthew 25:6-10), is meant the Lord, as is evident from verse 13 where it is said:

Watch therefore, for ye know not the day nor the hour wherein the SON OF MAN cometh. Besides many passages in the Prophets.

Conjugial Love #117 (Wunsch (1937))

117. (i) In the Word, the Lord is called Bridegroom and Husband and the Church Bride and Wife, and the conjunction of the Lord with the Church and the reciprocal conjunction of the Church with the Lord, is called marriage. That the Lord is called Bridegroom and Husband in the Word, and the Church Bride and Wife, is evident from these passages:

He who has the Bride is the Bridegroom; but the friend of the Bridegroom, who stands and hears Him, rejoices with great joy at the Bridegroom's voice (John 3:29);

John the Baptist spoke this of the Lord.

Jesus said, As long as the Bridegroom is with them, the children of the nuptials cannot fast: the days will come when the Bridegroom will be taken away from them, then will they fast (Matthew 9:15, Mark 2:19-20, Luke 5:34-35).

I saw the Holy City, New Jerusalem .. . prepared as a Bride adorned for her husband (Revelation 21:2);

By the 'New Jerusalem,' the Lord's new Church is meant (see Apocalypse Revealed 880-881).

The angel said to John, Come, I will show you the Bride, the Lamb's Wife; and he showed him the Holy City, Jerusalem (Revelation 21:9-10) .

The time of the nuptials of the Lamb has come, and His Wife has made herself ready:... blessed are those who have been called to the marriage supper of the Lamb (Revelation 19:7, 9).

The Lord also is meant by the Bridegroom whom the five virgins who were ready went to meet and with whom they entered into the wedding (Matthew 25:1-10), as is plain from verse 13, where it is said,

Watch therefore, for you know not the day or the hour in which the Son of man will come.

We might cite many passages from the Prophets, too.

Conjugial Love #117 (Warren and Tafel (1910))

117. (1) That in the Word the Lord is called the Bridegroom and Husband, and the Church, the Bride and Wife; and that the conjunction of the Lord with the Church, and the reciprocal conjunction of the Church with the Lord is called marriage. That in the Word the Lord is called the Bridegroom and Husband, and the Church, the Bride and Wife, may be seen from the following passages:

He that hath the bride is the Bridegroom; but the friend of the Bridegroom, who standeth and heareth Him, rejoiceth with joy because of the Bridegroom's voice (John 3:29).

This was said concerning the Lord by John the Baptist:

I saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, prepared as a bride adorned for her Husband (Revelation 21:2).

That by the New Jerusalem a new Church of the Lord is meant, may be seen in the Apocalypse Revealed 880, 881. The angel said to John:

Come and I will shew thee the bride, the wife of the Lamb. And he chewed him the holy city, Jerusalem (Revelation 21:9-10);

The nuptials of the Lamb are come, and His wife hath made herself ready. Blessed are they which are called to the supper of the nuptials of the Lamb (Revelation 19:7, 9).

The Lord is meant by the Bridegroom whom the five virgins that were ready went forth to meet, and with whom they entered in to the marriage, as is plain from verse 13, where it is said: 'Watch, therefore, for ye know not the day, nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.' There are besides many passages in the Prophets.

De Amore Conjugiali #117 (original Latin (1768))

Matth. 9:15. Marc. 2:19-20. Luc. 5:34-35.

"Vidi Urbem Sanctam Hierosolymam Novam paratam sicut Sponsam ornatam Marito suo," Apoc. 21:2;

25:1-10, intelligitur Dominus, quod patet a Versu 13, ubi dicitur,

"Vigilate ergo, quia non novistis diem, neque horam, in qua Filius hominis venturus."

Praeter multis in locis apud Prophetas.
