82. (4) It is by means of these two faculties that a person is reformed and regenerated by the Lord, and he cannot be reformed and regenerated apart from them. The Lord teaches that unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God (John 3:3, 5, 7). But few know what it is to be born again or regenerated. That is because people do not know what love and charity are, and so neither what faith is. For anyone who does not know what love and charity are cannot know what faith is, since charity and faith go together, like good and truth, or like the affection belonging to love and the thought belonging to the intellect. We discussed this union in our treatise Divine Love and Wisdom 427-431, and in The New Jerusalem and its Heavenly Doctrine 13-24. But see nos. 3-20 above.
82. 4. It is by means of these two abilities that the Lord reforms and regenerates us; without them we could not be reformed and regenerated. The Lord teaches us that "No one can see the kingdom of God except by being born again" (John 3:3, 5, 7). However, not many people know what "being born again" or "being regenerated" actually is. This is because people do not know what love and thoughtful living are; so they do not know what faith is, either, because anyone who does not know what love and thoughtful living are cannot know what faith is. Thoughtful living and faith are integral to each other the way what is good and what is true are, the way desires of our volition and thoughts of our discernment are. On this union see Divine Love and Wisdom 427-431; The New Jerusalem and Its Heavenly Teachings 13-24; and 3-20 above.
82. IV. IT IS BY MEANS OF THESE TWO FACULTIES (RATIONALITY AND LIBERTY) THAT MAN IS REFORMED AND REGENERATED BY THE LORD; AND WITHOUT THEM HE CANNOT BE REFORMED AND REGENERATED. The Lord teaches that
Except a man be born again he cannot see the kingdom of God. (John 3:3, 5, 7).
Very few, however, know what it is to be born again or regenerated, because it has not been known what love and charity are, nor consequently what faith is. For one who does not know what love and charity are cannot know what faith is, since charity and faith make one, like good and truth, and like affection which belongs to the will and thought which belongs to the understanding. Concerning this union see the treatise THE DIVINE LOVE AND WISDOM (n. 427-431); also THE DOCTRINE OF THE NEW JERUSALEM 1(n. 13-24); and also above (n. 3-20).

Except a man be born again he cannot see the kingdom of God (John 3:3, 5, 7).
But very few know what it is to be born again or regenerated, for the reason that it has not been known what love and charity are, nor, therefore, what faith is; for if one does not know what love and charity are, he cannot know what faith is, since charity and faith make one, like good and truth, and like affection which belongs to the will and thought which belongs to the understanding. 82. IV.
