559、再者,自我之爱是这样的:一旦松开它的缰绳,也就是除去外在的约束(害怕法律及其处罚,害怕丧失名声、尊贵、利益、地位和性命),它就向前狂奔,最终不仅想统治整个世界,还想统治整个天堂,甚至想凌驾于主之上,永无止境。这种倾向潜藏在每个处在自我之爱中的人身上,虽然并没有向世人显明,但它在那里被前面所提到的那些束缚拦阻着。就这样,每个人都能从那些不受制于上述约束的统治者和国王身上看到,他们向前狂奔,征服尽可能多的城邦和王国,渴望无限的的权力和荣耀。更引人注目的是今天的巴比伦,{注1}它将自己的统治伸向天堂,将主的一切神性大能全部转移到自己身上,并不断地贪求更多。这些人死后进入来世,与上帝和天堂直接对立,站在地狱一边。这可见于《最后的审判和巴比伦的毁灭》{注2}这本小册子。

Heaven and Hell #559 (NCE, 2000)

559. By nature, self-love runs wild to the extent that its reins are loosened, that is, to the extent that the outward restraints constituted by fears of the law and its penalties, fears of losing reputation, esteem, profit, position, and life are taken away. It runs wild even to the extent of wanting to rule not only over the whole globe but even over all heaven and the Lord himself. It knows no bound or limit. This is latent in everyone who is focused on self-love even though it may not show in the world, where the restraints we have mentioned hold it back.

We cannot fail to see this in people in power and kings who are not held back by any such restraints. They run wild and conquer as many territories and kingdoms as they can and aspire to boundless power and glory. This is even clearer in the modern Babylon, which extends its control into heaven and transfers all the Lord's divine power to itself and even craves more.

The reader may see in the booklet Last Judgment that people like this are diametrically opposed to the Divine and to heaven and that they favor hell when they arrive in the other life after death.

559. Again, love of self is such that so far as the reins are given it, that is, so far as external bonds are removed, which are fears of the law and its penalties, and of the loss of reputation, honour, gain, employment, and life, so far it rushes on until it finally wants to rule not only over the whole terrestrial globe but also over the entire heaven, and over the Divine Himself; knowing no limit or end. This propensity lurks hidden in everyone who is in the love of self; although it is not manifest to the world, where he is held in check by such bonds as have been mentioned. That this is so, no one can fail to see in the case of potentates and kings who have no such restraints and bonds, but rush on and subjugate provinces and kingdoms so far as they are successful, and aspire to power and glory without limit. It is still more strikingly evident from the Babylon of this day, which has extended its dominion into heaven, and has transferred to itself all the Divine power of the Lord, and continually lusts for more. That such men, when after death they come into the other life, are directly opposed to the Divine and to heaven, and are on the side of hell, can be seen in the little work on THE LAST JUDGMENT AND THE DESTRUCTION OF BABYLON.
