The New Jerusalem and its Heavenly Teachings (New Century Edition 2020) 189

189. There are also times of inner anxiety for people whose lives are not devoted to goodness and truth. Theirs are earthly anxieties, though, not spiritual ones. The distinction is that earthly anxieties focus on worldly concerns, while spiritual anxieties focus on heavenly ones.

The Heavenly City (Woofenden translation 1993) 189

189. People who do not do good things or have true ideas can also have inner anguish, but it is materialistic, not spiritual. You can tell the difference because materialistic anguish is about material things, while spiritual anguish is about heavenly things.

The New Jerusalem and its Heavenly Doctrine (Chadwick translation 1990) 189

189. Inward anxiety can also be experienced by those who are not in states of good and truth, but these are natural rather than spiritual anxieties. They can be told apart by natural anxieties having as their subject worldly matters, but by spiritual anxieties being about heavenly matters.

The New Jerusalem and its Heavenly Doctrine (Tafel translation 1911) 189

189. Feelings of interior distress are also with those who are not in goods and truths: but feelings of natural, and not of spiritual, distress. The two are distinguished by this, that natural distress has for its object worldly things, but spiritual distress heavenly things.

The New Jerusalem and its Heavenly Doctrine (Whitehead translation 1892) 189

189. Interior anxieties are also experienced by those who are not in goods and truths; but they are natural, not spiritual anxieties; the two are distinguished by this, that natural anxieties have worldly things for their objects, but spiritual anxieties, heavenly things.

De Nova Hierosolyma et ejus Doctrina Caelesti 189 (original Latin 1758)
