Spiritual Experiences (Odhner and Nemitz translation 1998) 1245

1245. However, when one places merit and righteousness in [good] works, then there is not faith within the works, because it is not a property of faith to believe that anyone can earn salvation of their own doing or that they can be righteous through their works. Therefore, when there is this kind of faith, and it is in the works one does, then it condemns the person because the person's self is in the works, and so is self-love and unrighteousness. 1748, 8 March.

Spiritual Experiences (Buss translation 1902) 1245

1245. But when merit or righteousness is placed in the works there is then no faith in them, for it is not of faith to believe that man can merit salvation of himself, or make himself righteous by his works. When, therefore, the faith is of such a character, and is such in the works, it then condemns man, for the man himself and thus the love of self and injustice are in the works. 1748, Mar. 8.

Experientiae Spirituales 1245 (original Latin 1748-1764)

1748, 8 Martius.
