Spiritual Experiences (Odhner and Nemitz translation 1998) 1438

1438. It should also be kept in mind that that deeper knowledge is instilled in a way that it is not impressed on the memory by an act of will on man's part, for then the roots do not strike deeply. Rather, it takes place mostly when one is unaware, not realizing that one has learned it-thus particularly through the hearing, by means of a casual reflection given by the Lord. 1748, 16 March.

Spiritual Experiences (Buss translation 1902) 1438

1438. It is to be observed further, that these cognitions are insinuated in such a way that they are not infixed in the memory from the will of man, for then the roots do not strike deeply. But this is for the most part effected whilst man is ignorant of it, so that he does not know that he has learnt them; thus especially from what he hears through slight reflection given by the Lord. 1748, Mar. 16.

Experientiae Spirituales 1438 (original Latin 1748-1764)

1748, 16 Martius.
