1494. There are angels who temper and relax the punishment, or, in the measure of the spirits' longing [for revenge], permit it to intensify. For the angels sense how much the horror increases, and how much the passion for revenge and the resulting delight in it are abated. Thus it becomes still more evident what kind and how much of the passion for revenge there is, and thereby the kinds and amounts of enjoyment.
1494. There are angels who moderate and relax the punishment, or permit it to become more intense, according to the lust of the spirits, for the angels perceive to what extent the horror is increased, and to what extent the cupidity and the delights of revenge therefrom are quietened. Hence the nature and degree of the lust of revenge and therefore the nature and degree of the delight, become still more evident.
