2959. When love perceives that good [will come of it], it willingly
permits chastening
Just now I was inspired to realize that one who loves willingly permits [those loved] to be chastened [cf. Rev. 3:19], which is done by a befitting kind of torment and a certain despair. For at the time I constantly kept my mind on the improvement and happiness that follows chastening, so that the purpose was in my mind, and I knew for certain that they would be liberated. 1748, 28 Aug.
2959. WHEN LOVE PERCEIVES GOOD, THAT IT WILLINGLY GOES THROUGH WITH VASTATION.
(It was now even me to perceive, that he who loves willingly goes through with vastation, which happens with a suitable sort of torment, and a certain [sort of] despair; for then I held my mind continually, in reform [emendatione] and felicity, which succeeds vastation, so that the end was in the mind, as it knows for certain that there would be liberation. - 1748, August 28).
1748, 28 Aug.
