3194. About siren adulterers
There are those who are of the conviction there is nothing more honorable than whoredom and adultery, which conviction they then support by many arguments, so that they consider that, with conviction, as a respectable way of life. Such are siren adulteresses, for when convinced of their respectability and devoutness, they can then almost lead angelic spirits astray, but angels are given to recognize them. I spoke with spirits about them, and it was said that such sirens are from Europe, where Christianity prevails, seldom from Asiatic, African, or American regions. 1748, 19 Sept.
3194. CONCERNING SIRENS [WHO ARE] ADULTERERS.
There are [some] who are persuaded that there is no impropriety in harlotry and adultery; this persuasion they finally confirm by many [considerations], so that they are persuaded to place a proper life therein. Such are siren-adulterers: for when they have a persuasion that they are decent [honesti] and pious, they can then almost lead wrong [seduce] angelic spirits, but it is granted to angels to recognize [their character]. Sunt qui in persuasione tali sunt, quod nihil honestius quam scortari et adulterare, quam persuasionem dein multis confirmant, sic ut honestam vitam cum persuasione in eo ponant, tales sunt sirenes adulterae, nam dum in persuasione honesti et pii sunt, tunc possunt seducere fere angelicos spiritus, sed angelis datur cognoscere, de iis loquutus cum spiritibus, et dictum quod tales sint ex Europa, ubi Christianismus, raro ex Asiaticis regionibus, Africis, et Americis. 1748, 19 Sept.
