Spiritual Experiences (Odhner and Nemitz translation 1998) 3458

3458. On speaking further with them when they had been reformed, [it appears] that they experience horrible, frightful, and shameful things, and the like, inflicted through punishments and purgings, until they acquire the habit of being watchful and thus restraining themselves with less reproval, and until in the course of time things so progress that their restraints may be released to a greater degree; for this same nature still remains. 1748, 3 Oct.

Spiritual Experiences (Buss translation 1902) 3458

3458. In speaking further concerning them when reformed, [I learned] that the means employed were honors, terrors, shames, and things of this nature, which were impressed upon them by punishments and vastations, until they contracted the habit of being more watchful over themselves, and could thus be restrained with less reprehension. The consequence is, that in process of time, they become such that a greater degree of liberty can be allowed them, though the same nature remains. - 1748, October 3.

Experientiae Spirituales 3458 (original Latin 1748-1764)

1748, 3 Oct. 13
