4463. But still they are very frequently punished, and at such a time they make use of any art whatever to be able to see whether they can escape it, and this for hours at a time, by collisions of various parts, even the lesser ones, with the accompanying torment; by the rolling back and forth of metal plates [used for torture] wrapped around a cylinder; by immersions in human dung, and like tortures. Then because they fear for their life, they abstain for a while, knowing that they cannot escape by any art whatever.

[These punishments] last for hours, [and are effected] by collisions as to all even the lesser parts [of the body], with tortures, by circumvolutions this way and that, like laminoe around a cylinder, by immersions into human excrement and the like, and because they then fear for their life, they abstain [from doing hurt] for some time, knowing that they cannot elude the punishment by any art.
