Spiritual Experiences (Odhner and Nemitz translation 1998) 4522

4522. I also realized that the spiritual are of this nature, namely, that their involuntary is continually and at every moment drawing them down, while the Lord is continually lifting them up. Where the force is stronger, to there the spirit slips - that is, if he does not receive the goodness of caring for others, or of conscience, he cannot but carry himself downward, and this either more or less.

Spiritual Experiences (Buss translation 1902) 4522

4522. It was perceived also that those who are spiritual are such that the involuntary draws them down every moment, but the Lord continually elevates them. Wherever the power is the strongest, thither a spirit lapses, that is to say, if he does not receive the good of charity and conscience; in this case he cannot do otherwise than determine himself downwards; and that more or less.
