人们以字义来理解圣经的各处经文是重要的。例如，主所提到的一些城，其实指的是教会的一系列状态；还例如先知书中多次提到的推罗城，说的是启示录里的天堂之事 2。这是因为与人同在的天使领会的是灵义。

22. The Word 1
In many places it is better for a person to understand the Word according to the letter. For example, in what the Lord says regarding certain cities, having to do with successive states of the church, in many passages in the Prophets, as in regard to the city Tyre; and concerning paradise in the book of Revelation. 2The reason is that angels are then present with the person in a perception of the spiritual meaning.

22. XXII. The Word.
It is important for a person to understand the Word literally in very many passages. For example, what the Lord says about cities, successive states of the church; in many passages of the Prophets, as about Tyre; in the Book of Revelation about paradise. The reason is that the angels with the person follow the spiritual sense.
22. XXII. IT IS BETTER FOR MAN IN MANY PASSAGES TO UNDERSTAND THE WORD ACCORDING TO THE LETTER.
For example, in what the Lord says concerning cities, concerning the successive states of the church, in the Prophets in many passages, as concerning Tyre, in Revelation, and concerning paradise; for the reason that the angels are then in the spiritual sense with man.

Praestat ut homo intelligat Verbum secundum literam, in permultis locis, ut exempli [causa], ut quae Dominus dicit de urbibus, de successivis statibus Ecclesiae, in Propheticis multis in locis, ut de Tyro, in Apocalypsi, de Paradiso, causa quia tunc Angeli sunt in sensu spirituali apud hominem.
