Apocalypse Revealed (Rogers translation 2007) 249

249. And when the living creatures gave glory and honor and thanks to Him who sat on the throne. (4:9) This symbolically means that the Word ascribes all truth and good and all worship to the Lord, who is about to judge.

The living creatures are the Word, as we have shown. Glory and honor referring to the Lord mean that all truth and good belong to Him and spring from Him. Thanks means all worship. He who sat on the throne is the Lord in relation to judgment, as before. Hence it is apparent that the statement, "when the living creatures gave glory and honor and thanks to Him who sat on the throne," symbolically means that the Word ascribes all truth and good and all worship to the Lord, who is about to judge.

To give glory and honor to the Lord has no other meaning in the Word than to acknowledge and confess that all truth and good come from Him, thus that He alone is God; for glory belongs to Him owing to His Divine truth, and honor owing to His Divine good.

[2] Glory and honor have these symbolic meanings in the following places:

Jehovah made the heavens. Glory and honor are before Him. (Psalms 96:5-6)

Jehovah... God, You are very great; You are clothed with glory and honor. (Psalms 104:1)

Great are the works of Jehovah... Glory and honor are His work... (Psalms 111:2-3)

Glory and honor You will place upon him... blessings to eternity. (Psalms 21:5-6, said in reference to the Lord.)

Gird Your sword upon Your thigh, O Mighty One in... glory and... honor. In Your honor mount up, ride upon the word of truth... (Psalms 45:3-4)

You have made him a little less than the angels; You have crowned him with glory and honor. (Psalms 8:5)

The glory of Lebanon shall be given to it, the honor of Carmel and Sharon. They shall see the glory of Jehovah, (and) the honor of our God. (Isaiah 35:2)

All of this is said in reference to the Lord, and also elsewhere, as in Psalms 145:4-5, 12 and Revelation 21:24, 26.

Moreover, where the Word speaks of Divine truth, it uses the term glory (no. 629), and where it speaks of Divine good, it uses the term honor.

Apocalypse Revealed (Coulson translation 1970) 249

249. [verse 9] 'And when the animals had given glory and honour and thanks to the One sitting upon the throne' signifies that the Word awards all truth and all good and all worship to the Lord about to judge. The 'animals' are the Word, as has been shown; 'glory and honour,' when said of the Lord, are [equivalent to saying] that all truths and good are of and from Him; the giving of 'thanks' is all worship; the 'One sitting upon the throne' is the Lord as to judgment, as above. It is plain from this that by 'when the animals had given glory and honour and thanks to the One sitting upon the throne' is signified that the Word awards all truth and all good and all worship to the Lord about to judge. By 'giving the Lord glory and honour' nothing else is understood in the Word than to acknowledge and confess that all truths and all good is from Him, thus that He Only is God, for 'glory' is His out of Divine Truths, and 'honour' out of Divine Good.

[2] These things are signified by 'glory and honour' in the following places:

Jehovah made the heavens, glory and honour [are] before Him. Psalms 96:5-6.

Jehovah God. [Thou hast been] very great, Thou hast put on glory and honor. Psalms 104:1.

The works of Jehovah are great. His work is glory and honour. Psalms 111:2-3.

Glory and honour Thou layest upon Him, blessings for ever. Psalms 21:5-6 [H.B. 6-7]-[said] of the Lord.

Gird Thy sword upon Thy thigh, O Mighty in glory and honour, in Thine honour mount up, ride upon the Word of the truth (veritas). Psalms 45:3-4 [H.B. 4-5].

Thou hast made him to lack very little compared with angels, Thou hast crowned him with glory and honor. Psalms 8:5; [H.B. 6].

The glory of Lebanon has been given to Him, the honour of Carmel and Sharon: they shall see the glory of Jehovah, and the honour of our God. . Isaiah 35:1-2.

All these things (haec et illa) [are said] of the Lord; besides elsewhere, as Psalms 145:4-5, 12; Revelation 21:24, 26. Moreover, 'glory' is said in the Word where it treats of Divine Truth (629) and 'honour' is said where it treats of Divine Good.

Apocalypse Revealed (Whitehead translation 1928) 249

249. Verse 9. And when these animals gave glory, and honor, and thanks to Him that sat upon the throne, signifies that the Word ascribes all truth, and all good, and all worship to the Lord, who is to judge. "The animals" are the Word, as has been shown; "glory and honor," when ascribed to the Lord, mean, that all truth and all good are His and from Him; "thanks" signify the all of worship; "He that sat on the throne" signifies the Lord as to judgment, as above. Hence it is evident, that by "when the animals gave glory, and honor, and thanks to Him that sat on the throne," is signified that the Word ascribes all truth, and all good, and all worship, to the Lord who is to judge. By "giving the Lord glory and honor," nothing else is meant in the Word than to acknowledge and confess that all truth and all good is from Him, thus that He alone is God, for He has glory from the Divine truth, and honor from the Divine good.

[2] This is signified by "glory and honor" in the following passages:

Jehovah made the heavens, glory and honor are before Him, (Psalms 96:5-6).

O Jehovah, O God, Thou art very great, Thou art clothed with glory and honor, (Psalms 104:1).

The works of Jehovah are great, glory and honor are His work, (Psalms 111:2-3).

Glory and honor Thou layest upon Him, blessings for ever, (Psalms 21:5-6).

Concerning the Lord:

Gird Thy sword upon the thigh, O mighty, in glory and honor; in Thy honor mount up, ride upon the Word of truth, (Psalms 45:3-4).

Thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, Thou hast crowned him with glory and honor, (Psalms 8:5).

The glory of Lebanon is given unto it, the honor of Carmel and Sharon; they shall see the glory of Jehovah and the honor of our God, (Isaiah 35:2).

These things refer to the Lord (besides other places, as Psalms 145:4-5, 12; Revelation 21:24, 26). Moreover, when the Divine truth is treated of in the Word, it is called "glory" (629[1-2]) and when the Divine good is treated of it is called "honor."

Apocalypsis Revelata 249 (original Latin 1766)

249. (Vers. 9.)

"Jehovah Caelos facit, Gloria et Honor coram Ipso," (Psalm 96:5-6);

"Jehovah Deus magnus valde, Gloriam et Honorem induisti," (Psalm 104:1);

"Magna opera Jehovae, Gloria et Honor opus Ipsius," (Psalm 111:2-3);

"Gloriam et Honorem pones super Ipsum, benedictiones in aeternum," (Psalm 21:6-7 (B.A. 5-6),

de Domino.

"Accinge gladium Tuum super femur, potens Gloria et Honore; in Honore Tuo conscende, equita super Verbo veritatis," (Psalm 45:4-5 (B.A. 3-4));

"Carere Ipsum fecisti paululum prae angelis, Gloria et Honore coronasti Ipsum," (Psalm 8:6 (B.A. 5));
