3384. And Isaac dwelt in Gerar. That this signifies the Lord's state in regard to the things of faith relatively to the rational things that were to be adjoined, is evident from the signification of "dwelling in Gerar," as being to be in the things which are of faith; thus the state in regard to these things; for "to dwell" signifies to live (n. 1293), and "Gerar" signifies the things which are of faith, (n. 1209, 2504, 3365)-and from the representation of Isaac, as being the Lord as to the Divine rational (n. 1893, 2066, 2072, 2083, 2630). That it is relatively to the rational things that were to be adjoined, is evident from what goes before and from what follows; for in this whole chapter these things are treated of, namely, the rational things which when enlightened by the Divine of the Lord are appearances of truth. [2] That "to dwell" denotes to be and to live, thus the state, is evident from many passages in the Word. As in David:
I will dwell in the house of Jehovah for length of days (Ps. 23:6). One thing have I asked of Jehovah, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of Jehovah all the days of my life (Ps. 27:4). He that worketh deceit shall not dwell in the midst of My house (Ps. 101:7);
where "dwelling in the house of Jehovah" denotes being and living in the good of love, for this is the "house of Jehovah." In Isaiah:
They that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined (Isa. 9:2);
"they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death" denotes the state of those who are in ignorance of good and truth. Again:
Babel shall not be inhabited forever (Isa. 13:20);
denoting the state of damnation of those who are "Babel." [3] Again:
O Jehovah God of Israel that inhabitest the cherubim (Isa. 37:16); O shepherd of Israel inhabiting the cherubim, shine forth (Ps. 80:1);
"to inhabit the cherubim" is the Lord as to a state of providence, lest anyone should enter into the holy things of love and faith unless prepared by the Lord (n. 308). In David:
In peace will I both lay me down and sleep, for Thou Jehovah alone makest me dwell in safety (Ps. 4:8);
"to make to dwell in safety" signifies a state of peace. In Jeremiah:
O thou that dwellest upon many waters, great in treasures, thine end is come, the measure of thy gain (Jer. 51:13);
concerning Babel; "dwelling upon many waters" denotes being in knowledges concerning truth. [4] In Daniel:
God Himself revealeth the deep and secret things, He knoweth what is in the darkness, and the light dwelleth with Him (Dan. 2:22);
where "dwelling" denotes being. Again in the same Prophet:
Under that tree the beast of the field had shadow, and the fowls of heaven dwelt in the branches thereof (Dan. 4:12). And in Ezekiel:
Under its branches all the wild beast of the field brought forth, and in its shadow dwelt all great nations (Ezek. 31:6);
where "dwelling" denotes being and living. In Hosea:
The threshing-floor and the wine-press shall not feed them, and the new wine shall fail her. They shall not dwell in the land of Jehovah; but Ephraim shall return to Egypt (Hos. 9:2-3);
"not to dwell in the land of Jehovah" denotes not to be in a state of the good of love, consequently not in the Lord's kingdom.

3384. 'Isaac dwelt in Gerar' means the Lord's state as regards matters of faith in respect to the rational concepts which were to be allied. This is clear from the meaning of 'dwelling in Gerar' as possessing what are matters of faith, and so a state as regards those things, since 'dwelling in' means living, 1293, and 'Gerar' matters of faith, 1209, 2504, 3365; and from the representation of 'Isaac' as the Lord as regards the Divine Rational, dealt with in 1893, 2066, 2072, 2083, 2630. Their being matters of faith in respect to the rational concepts that were to be allied is clear from what comes before and after, for in the whole of this chapter those things are the subject, that is to say, rational concepts which, when enlightened from the Lord's Divine, are appearances of truth.
[2] That 'dwelling in' means one's being and life, and so one's state, is evident from very many places in the Word, as in David,
I will dwell in the house of Jehovah for the length of days. Ps 23:6.
One thing have I asked from Jehovah, that will I seek: I may dwell in the house of Jehovah all the days of the my life. Ps 27:4
He shall not dwell within My house who practices deceit. Ps 101:7.
Here 'dwelling in the house of Jehovah' stands for one's being and life residing in good that stems from love, for this good is 'the house of Jehovah'. In Isaiah,
Those dwelling in the land of the shadow of death, upon them has the light shone out. Isa 9:2.
'Those dwelling in the land of the shadow of death' stands for the state of those who have no knowledge of good and truth. In the same prophet,
Babel will not be dwelt in for ever. Isa 13:20.
This stands for the state of condemnation of those meant by 'Babel'.
[3] In the same prophet,
O Jehovah God of Israel, dwelling among the cherubim. Isa 37:16.
O Shepherd of Israel, dwelling among the cherubim, shine forth. Ps 80:1.
'Dwelling among the cherubim' means the Lord at work in a providential state, in which He prevents anyone's access to the sacred things of love and faith unless that person has been prepared for it by the Lord, 308. In David,
In peace I both lie down and sleep, for You, O Jehovah, alone make me dwell in safety. Ps 4:8.
'Making a person dwell in safety' stands for a state of peace. In Jeremiah,
You who dwell on many waters, great in treasures, your end has come, the measure of your gain. Jer 51:13.
This refers to Babel. 'Dwelling on many waters' stands for possessing cognitions concerning truth.
[4] In Daniel,
God Himself reveals deep and hidden things; He knows what is in the darkness, and the light dwells with Him. Dan 2:22.
'Dwelling' stands for having its being. In the same prophet,
The beast of the field had shade under that tree, and in its branches dwelt the birds of the air. Dan 4:12.
And in Ezekiel,
Under its branches every wild beast of the field brought forth, and in its shadow dwelt all great nations. Ezek 31:6.
'Dwelling' stands for one's being and life. In Hosea,
Threshing-floor and winepress will not feed them, and new wine will be deceptive to her. They will not dwell in Jehovah's land, but Ephraim will return to Egypt. Hosea 9:2, 3.
'Not dwelling in Jehovah's land' stands for not being in a state where the good of love is present, and so for not being in the Lord's kingdom.

3384. `Habitabat Jishak in Gerar': quod significet statum Domini quoad illa quae sunt fidei respective ad rationalia quae adjungenda, constat a significatione `habitare in Gerar' quod sit esse in illis quae (t)fidei sunt, ita status quoad illa; `habitare' enim significat vivere, n. 1293, et `Gerar' illa quae sunt fidei, n. 1209, 2504, 3365; et a repraesentatione `Jishaki' quod sit Dominus quoad Divinum Rationale, de qua n. 1893, 2066, 2072, 2083, 2630; quod sint respective ad rationalia quae adjungenda, constat ab illis quae praecedunt et ab illis quae sequuntur, nam agitur in toto hoc capite de illis, nempe de rationalibus quae illustrata a Divino Domini sunt apparentiae veri. Non habitabit in medio domus Meae, faciens dolum, Ps. ci 7; ubi `habitare in domo Jehovae' pro esse et vivere in bono amoris, nam hoc est `domus Jehovae': apud Esaiam, Habitantes in terra umbrae mortis, lux effulsit super eos, ix 1;

Pastor Israelis...habitans cherubos, effulge, Ps. lxxx 2 [A.V. 1];
`habitans cherubos' est Dominus quoad statum providentiae, ne quis in sancta amoris et fidei nisi praeparatus a Domino immittatur, n. 308: apud Davidem, In pace simul cubo et dormio, nam Tu Jehovah solus securum me habitare facis, Ps. iv 9 [A.V. 8];

et apud Ezechielem, Sub ramis ejus pepererunt omnis fera agri, et in umbra ejus habitarunt omnes gentes magnae, xxxi 6;
`habitare' pro esse et vivere: apud Hosheam, Area et torcular non pascet eos, et mustum mentietur illi, non habitabunt in terra Jehovae, et revertetur Ephraim Aegyptum, ix 2, 3;
`non habitare in terra Jehovae' pro non esse in statu boni amoris, ita non in regno Domini. @1 in umbra mortis I$ @2 ejus$
