  3780.“雅各对他们说,他平安吗”表这良善是出自主的国度吗?这从下文所论述的“平安”的含义清楚可知。从历史意义上看,这是针对拉班是否有平安所作的一次调查;但从内义上看,这是针对拉班代表的良善所作的一次调查。因为“拉班”代表源自一个共同家族的旁系良善,也就是诸如存在于属普世教会,也就是属主国度的外邦人当中的那类良善(参看3778节)。由此明显可知“这良善是出自主的国度吗”这句话是什么意思。
  至于平安,就至高意义而言,平安表示主自己,由此在内义上表示祂的国度。平安也是从至内在感染那里的人所具有的良善的主之神性。这些事在圣言中由“平安”来表示,这一事实从许多经文明显看出来。如以赛亚书:
  因有一婴孩为我们而生,有一子赐给我们,政权必担在祂的肩头上,祂名称为奇妙、策士、神、勇士、永恒的父、和平的君。祂的政权与平安必加增无穷,祂必在大卫的宝座上治理祂的国。(以赛亚书9:6-7
  此处“和平的君”明显表示主;“祂的政权与平安必加增”表存在于其国度中的事物,因而表示其国度本身。又:
  公义的果效必是平安,公义的效验必是平静与安稳,直到永远;我的百姓必住在平安的居所。(以赛亚书32:17-18
  这论及主的国度,在那里,平安、平静和安稳相继到来;“平安的居所”表示天堂。

  在所有这些经文中,就至高意义而言,“平安”表示主;就代表意义而言,表示祂的国度和在那国度中来自主的良善,因而表示流入良善或对良善的情感的神性,这神性也通过至内在带来欢喜快乐的感觉。由此明显可知这些祝福的话是什么意思:

3780. And he said into them, Hath he peace? That this signifies, Is not this good from the Lord's kingdom? is evident from the signification of "peace," concerning which in what follows. In the historical sense inquiry is made concerning Laban, as to whether he hath peace, but in the internal sense the inquiry is concerning the good which is represented by Laban. That Laban represents the collateral good of a common stock, that is, such good as exists among the Gentiles, who are in the general church, that is, in the Lord's kingdom, may be seen just above (n. 3778). From this it is evident what is signified by the words, "Is not this good from the Lord's kingdom?" [2] In regard to peace, in the supreme sense it signifies the Lord Himself, and hence in the internal sense His kingdom, and it is the Lord's Divine inmostly affecting the good in which are those who are therein. That these things are signified in the Word by "peace," is evident from many passages; as in Isaiah:

Unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given and the government shall be upon His shoulder and His name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, God, Hero, Father of Eternity, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon His kingdom (Isa. 9:6-7);

where the "Prince of Peace" manifestly denotes the Lord; and "the increase of His government and peace" denotes the things which are in His kingdom, thus His kingdom itself. Again:

The work of righteousness shall be peace, and the labor of righteousness quietness and security for ever; and My people shall dwell in a habitation of peace (Isa. 32:17-18);

in which passage the Lord's kingdom is treated of, where peace, quietness, and security succeed each other; a "habitation of peace" denotes heaven. [3] Again:

The angels of peace weep bitterly; the paths are laid waste, the way- faring man hath ceased (Isa. 33:7-8);

"angels of peace" denote those who are in the Lord's kingdom, thus that kingdom itself, and in the supreme sense the Lord; the "paths being laid waste, and the wayfaring man ceasing," signifies that there is no longer truth anywhere. (That "paths" and "ways" are truths, see above, n. 627, 2333). Again:

How delightful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace; that saith unto Zion, Thy God* reigneth (Isa. 52:7);

where "he that bringeth good tidings and publisheth peace" denotes the Lord's kingdom. Again:

The mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed; but My mercy shall not depart from thee, neither shall the covenant of My peace be removed (Isa. 54:10). Again:

The way of peace have they not known; and there is no judgment in their tracks (Isa. 59:8). In Jeremiah:

I will take away My peace from this people, saith Jehovah, even compassion and mercy (Jer. 16:5). [4] Again:

The folds of peace are laid waste, because of the burning of the anger of Jehovah (Jer. 25:37). Again:

The prophet who prophesieth of peace, when the word of the prophet** shall come to pass, then shall the prophet be known, that Jehovah hath sent him (Jer. 28:9). Again:

I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith Jehovah, thoughts of peace (Jer. 29:11). So in Haggai:

The glory of this latter house shall be greater than that of the former; for in this place will I give peace (Hag. 2:9). And in Zechariah:

They shall be a seed of peace; the vine shall give her fruit, and the earth shall give her increase, and the heavens shall give their dew (Zech. 8:12). In David:

Keep integrity*** and behold the upright, because the end for that man is peace (Ps. 37:37). In Luke:

Jesus saith to His disciples, Into whatsoever house ye enter, first say, Peace be to this house. And if the son of peace be there, your peace shall rest upon it; but if not, it shall turn to you again (Luke 10:5-6). In John:

Peace I leave with you, My peace I give unto you; not as the world giveth, give I unto you (John 14:27). Again:

Jesus said, These things have I spoken unto you that in Me ye may have peace (John 16:33). [5] In all these passages in the supreme sense "peace" signifies the Lord; and in the representative sense His kingdom, and good from the Lord therein, thus the Divine which flows into good, or into the affections of good, which also causes joy and happiness from the inmost. From this it is manifest what is meant by these words of the benediction:

Jehovah lift up His faces upon thee and give thee peace (Num. 6:26);

and what by the salutation used of old, "Peace be unto you;" and the same addressed by the Lord to the apostles (John 20:19, 21, 26). 3780. 'And he said to them, Does he have peace?' means, Does it - that good - come from the Lord's kingdom? This is clear from the meaning of 'peace' dealt with below. In the historical sense it is an inquiry into whether Laban 'has peace', but in the internal sense it is an inquiry concerning the good which Laban represents. For 'Laban' is a parallel good springing from a common stock, that is, the kind of good that exists among gentiles who belong to the universal Church, that is, to the Lord's kingdom, see immediately above in 3778. From this it is evident what those words mean - Does it come from the Lord's kingdom?

[2] As regards 'peace', this means in the highest sense the Lord Himself, and from this in the internal sense His kingdom. Peace is also the Lord's Divine affecting inmostly the good which governs people there. The fact that these things are meant in the Word by 'peace' becomes clear from many places, as in Isaiah,

To us a Boy is born, to us a Son is given, whose government will be upon His shoulder; and His name will be called, Wonderful, Counsellor, God, Hero, Father of Eternity, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government and of peace there will be no end, upon the throne of David and over His kingdom. Isa 9:6, 7.

Here 'Prince of Peace' clearly stands for the Lord, 'the increase of government and of peace' for the things that exist in His kingdom, and so it stands for the kingdom itself. In the same prophet,

The work of righteousness will be peace, and the labour of righteousness quietness and security for ever. And My people will abide in a habitation of peace. Isa 32:17, 18.

This refers to the Lord's kingdom, where 'peace', 'quietness', and 'security' follow consecutively. 'A habitation of peace' stands for heaven.

[3] In the same prophet,

The angels of peace weep bitterly. The highways have been laid waste, the wayfarer has ceased. Isa 33:7, 8.

'The angels of peace' stands for members of the Lord's kingdom, and so 'peace' stands for the kingdom itself, and in the highest sense for the Lord. 'The highways have been laid waste and the wayfarer has ceased' stands for the fact that truth existed nowhere any longer - 'highways' and 'ways' meaning truths, see 627, 2333. In the same prophet,

How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of Him who is bringing good tidings, causing peace to be heard, bringing good tidings of good, causing salvation to be heard, saying to Zion, Your God reigns. Isa 52:7.

'Bringing good tidings and causing peace to be heard' stands for the Lord's kingdom. In the same prophet,

The mountains will depart and the hills be removed, but My mercy will not depart from you, and the covenant of My peace will not be removed. Isa 54:10.

In the same prophet,

The way of peace they have not known, and there is no judgement in their tracks. Isa 59:8.

[4] In Jeremiah,

I will assemble My peace from this people, said Jehovah, pity and mercy. Jer 16:5.
In the same prophet, The folds of peace have been laid waste, because of the fierce anger of Jehovah. Jer 25:37.

In the same prophet,

The prophet who prophesies of peace, when the word of the prophet comes to pass, the prophet will be known, that Jehovah has in truth sent him. Jer 28:9.

In the same prophet,

I know the thoughts that I am thinking towards you, said Jehovah, thoughts of peace. Jer 29:11.

In Haggai,

The glory of this latter house will be greater than that of the former, for in this place I will give peace. Hagg 2:9.

In Zechariah,

They will be the seed of peace; the vine will give its fruit, and the land will give its increase, and the heavens will give their dew. Zech 8:12.

In David,

Care for the blameless one, and behold the upright, for the latter end of that man is peace. Ps 37:37.

In Luke,

Jesus said to the disciples, Whatever house you enter, first say, Peace be to this house! And if a son of peace is there, your peace shall rest on it; but if not, it shall return to you. Luke 10:5, 6.

In John,

Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. John 14:27.

In the same gospel,

Jesus said, These things I have said to you, that in Me you may have peace. John 16:33.

[5] In all these places 'peace' in the highest sense means the Lord, in the representative sense His kingdom and good from the Lord in that kingdom, and so means the Divine which flows into good or into affections for good, which also, from what is inmost, brings feelings of joy and happiness. This shows what is meant by the words of the blessing,

Jehovah will lift up His face upon you and give you peace. Num 6:26.
It also shows what is meant by the customary greeting received from ancient times, Peace to you, the same words as were used by the Lord to greet the apostles, John 20:19, 21, 26.
