Potts(1905-1910) 6260

6260. And he kissed them. That this signifies conjunction from the affection of truth, is evident from the signification of "kissing," as being conjunction from affection (see n. 3573, 3574, 4215, 4353, 5929). That it is from the affection of truth, is because it follows that "he embraced them," by which is signified conjunction from the affection of good, for "embracing" denotes a more interior and therefore a closer affection than "kissing," as is the affection of good compared with the affection of truth.

Elliott(1983-1999) 6260

6260. 'And [Israel] kissed them' means a joining together resulting from an affection for truth. This is clear from the meaning of kissing' as a joining together resulting from affection, dealt with in 3573, 3574, 4215, 4753, 5929. The reason it is the result of an affection for truth is that the words 'embraced them' follow, by which a joining together resulting from an affection for good is meant. For 'embracing' describes a more internal and consequently closer joining togethera than 'kissing', even as an affection for good is more internal than an affection for truth.

Notes

a The Latin means affection, but a joining together is clearly intended.

Latin(1748-1756) 6260

6260. `Et osculatus illos': quod significet conjunctionem ex affectione veri, constat ex significatione `osculari' quod sit conjunctio ex affectione, de qua n. 3573, 3574, 4215, 4353, 5929; quod sit (x)ex affectione veri, est quia sequitur quod `amplexus illos' per quod significatur conjunctio ex affectione boni, quam amplecti est interior et inde arctior affectio quam osculari, sicut est affectio boni quam affectio veri.
