  8343.“将马和骑马的投在海中”表仅仅由于祂的同在,信仰上的虚假和生活上的邪恶就把自己投入地狱。这从“马和骑马的”、“投在海中”的含义清楚可知:“马和骑马的”是指邪恶所生的虚假(参看81468148节);“投在海中”是指下入地狱(参看809981378138节);这一切的发生仅仅由于主的同在(参看8137e,8265节)。之所以说虚假和邪恶“把自己”投入地狱,是因为被投入地狱的,正是虚假和邪恶本身,这些东西将它们粘附的人拖了下来。事实上,人通过生活上的邪恶变成邪恶所生的虚假的形式;因此,当伴随虚假的邪恶本身被扔下去时,它们所粘附的形式也与它们一起被拖了下去。虚假和邪恶是从地狱中散发出来的东西,并流入那些已通过生活上的邪恶而使自己的内层变成接受这些散发物的形式之人中间,因为构成思维和意愿的一切事物都是流入的,良善是从天堂流入的,邪恶是从地狱流入的(参看2886-28884151424958466189619161936203620662136324632571477343节)。正因如此,我们才说信仰上的虚假和生活上的邪恶将自己投入地狱。鉴于此,当天使思想并谈论地狱时,他们思想并谈论完全从地狱居民抽象出来的虚假和邪恶;因为天使总是驱逐专注于人的观念,保留专注于事物的观念(参看522552875434节)。

8343. The horse and his rider hath He cast into the sea. That this signifies that by virtue of His mere presence the falsities of faith and evils of life cast themselves into hell, is evident from the signification of "horse" and of "rider," as being falsities from evil (see n. 8146, 8148); and from the signification of "casting into the sea," as being into hell (see n. 8099, 8137, 8138); that this was effected by virtue of the mere presence of the Lord, see n. 8137, 8265. It is said that falsities and evils "cast themselves" into hell, for the reason that it is the very falsities and evils that are cast into hell, and these draw with them those to whom they adhere. For through evil of life men become forms of falsities from evil, and therefore when the evils themselves with their falsities are cast down, the forms also to which they adhere are dragged down together with them; for falsities and evils are exhalations from the hells, and flow in with those who through evils of life have made their interiors forms of reception. (That everything of thought and of will flows in, good from heaven, and evil from hell, see n. 2886-2888, 4151, 4249, 5846, 6189, 6191, 6193, 6203, 6206, 6213, 6324, 6325, 7147, 7343.) Hence then it is that it is said that falsities of faith and evils of life cast themselves into hell; and therefore when the angels are thinking and speaking about the hells they think and speak of falsities and evils abstractedly from those who are there; for the angels always remove ideas of person, and remain in ideas of things (see n. 5225, 5287, 5434).

8343. 'The horse and its rider He has thrown into the sea' means that as a result simply of His presence falsities in faith and evils in life cast themselves into hell. This is clear from the meaning of 'horse and rider' as falsities arising from evil, dealt with in 8146, 8148; and from the meaning of 'throwing into the sea' as into hell, dealt with in 8099, 8137, 8138. As regards its happening as a result simply of the Lord's presence, see 8137 (end), 8265. The reason for saying that the falsities and evils cast themselves into hell is that falsities and evils themselves are what are cast into hell, and these drag down with them the people to whom they cling. For through evil in life a person becomes a form of the falsity that arises from evil; consequently when evils themselves accompanied by falsities are thrown down, forms to which they cling are dragged down together with them. Falsities and evils are emanations from the hells, flowing in among those who through evils in life have made their inner selves into forms that receive those emanations, since everything composing thought and will flows in, what is good from heaven, but what is bad from hell, see 2886-2888, 4151, 4249, 5846, 6189, 6191, 6193, 6203, 6206, 6213, 6324, 6325, 7147, 7343. These then are the reasons for saying that the falsities in faith and evils in life cast themselves into hell. On account of this when angels think and talk about the hells they think and talk about falsities and evils completely separate from the inhabitants there; for angels always banish ideas that focus on persons and confine themselves to those that focus on things, 5225, 5287, 5434.
