Apocalypse Revealed (Rogers translation 2007) 730

730. 17:6 And I saw the woman, drunk with the blood of the saints and with the blood of the witnesses of Jesus. This symbolizes the Roman Catholic religion irrational because of its adulterating and profaning the Divine truths and goods of the Lord, of the Word, and so of the church.

The woman symbolizes the Roman Catholic religion, as in nos. 723, 725 above. To be drunk means, symbolically, to be irrational in spiritual matters (no. 721). The blood symbolizes their falsification, adulteration and profanation of the Word (nos. 327, 379, 681, 684). Saints symbolize people who are governed by Divine truths from the Lord through the Word, and in an abstract sense the Divine truths themselves of the Lord, of the Word, and so of the church (nos. 173, 586, 664). The witnesses of Jesus symbolize in an abstract sense the truths and goods in the church from the Lord through the Word (nos. 6, 16, 490, 501, 669), here those truths and goods profaned, because the blood is called the blood of the saints and of the witnesses of Jesus, and the subject is Babylon, which also symbolizes a profanation of the goodness and truth in the Word and in the church (nos. 717, 718).

It follows from this that John's seeing the woman drunk with the blood of the saints and with the blood of the witnesses of Jesus symbolizes the Roman Catholic religion irrational because of its adulterating and profaning the Divine truths and goods of the Lord, of the Word, and so of the church.

Apocalypse Revealed (Coulson translation 1970) 730

730. [verse 6] 'And I saw the woman drunk with the blood of the saints and with the blood of the witnesses of Jesus' signifies that form of religion being insane as the result of the adulterated and profaned Divine Truths and Goods of the Lord, of the Word, and of the Church therefrom. By 'the woman' is signified that form of religion, as above (723, 725). By 'to be drunk' is signified to be insane in spiritual things (721). By 'the blood' is signified the falsification, adulteration, and profanation of the Word (327, 379, 681, 684). By 'the saints' are signified those who are in Divine Truths from the Lord by means of the Word, and abstractly the Divine truths of the Lord, the Word, and the Church therefrom (173, 586, 666). By 'the witnesses of Jesus' are signified abstractly the truths and goods in the Church from the Lord by means of the Word (6, 16, 490, 506, 669), here those profaned, because it is said 'the blood of the martyrs or witnesses of Jesus,' and it is said of 'Babylon,' by which is also signified the profanation of the good and truth of the Word and the Church (717-718). From these considerations it is established that by 'I saw the woman drunk with the blood of the saints and with the blood of the witnesses of Jesus' is signified that form of religion being insane as the result of the adulterated and profaned Divine Truths and Goods of the Lord, the Word, and the Church therefrom.

Apocalypse Revealed (Whitehead translation 1928) 730

730. Verse 6 (Revelation 17:6). And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the witnesses of Jesus, signifies that religious persuasion insane from the adulterated and profaned Divine truths and goods of the Lord, of the Word, and thence of the church. By "the woman" is signified that religious persuasion, as above, (723, 725); by "being drunken" is signified to be insane in spiritual things, (721). By "blood" is signified the falsification, adulteration, and profanation of the Word, (327, 379[1-7], 681, 684). By "saints" are signified they who, by the Word, are in Divine truths from the Lord, and abstractly, the Divine truths of the Lord, of the Word, and thence of the church, (173, 586, 666). By "the witnesses of Jesus" are signified abstractly the truths and goods from the Lord through the Word in the church, (6, 16, 490, 506, 668), here the same profaned, because it says "the blood of the martyrs" or "witnesses of Jesus," and is spoken of Babylon, by which is also signified the profanation of the good and truth of the Word and of the church, (717, 718). From these things it is evident, that by "I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the witnesses of Jesus," is signified that religious persuasion insane from the adulterated and profaned Divine truths and goods of the Lord, of the Word, and thence of the church.

Apocalypsis Revelata 730 (original Latin 1766)

730. (Vers. 6.)
