Apocalypse Revealed (Rogers translation 2007) 910

910. The measure of a man, that is, of an angel. This symbolizes the character of the New Church as being united with heaven.

A measure symbolizes the character of a thing (nos. 313, 486). A man here symbolizes the church, which is composed of people, and an angel symbolizes heaven, which is composed of angels. Therefore the measure of a man, that is, of an angel, symbolizes the character of the church as being united with heaven.

A man in the Word symbolizes intelligence and wisdom gained from the Word (no. 243), and intelligence and wisdom from the Word in a person constitute the church in him. Consequently a man in a concrete or generic sense - that is, when a society or company of people is called a man - in the spiritual sense means the church. That is why prophets were called sons of man, and why the Lord called Himself Son of Man. A son of man means a church's truth from the Word, and when applied to the Lord, it means the Word itself on which the church is founded.

An angel has three symbolic meanings: in the highest sense the Lord; in a general sense heaven or a heavenly society; and in a particular sense Divine truth. That an angel has these three symbolic meanings may be seen in nos. 5, 65, 170, 258, 342, 344, 415, 465, 644, 647, 648, 657, 718. Here the angel symbolizes the heaven with which the Lord's New Church will be united.

A church that is founded on the Word, thus on the Lord, is a church affiliated with heaven and conjoined with the Lord, as may be seen in no. 818 above. Not so a church not founded on the Lord's Word.

Apocalypse Revealed (Coulson translation 1970) 910

910. 'The measure of a man, that is, of an angel' signifies that Church's quality of making one with heaven. By 'measure' is signified the quality of a thing (313, 486). By 'a man' here is signified the Church [composed] of men, and by 'an angel' is signified heaven [composed] of angels. Consequently by 'the measure of a man, that is, of an angel' is signified the Church's quality of making one with heaven. By 'a man' in the Word is signified intelligence and wisdom derived from the Word (243), intelligence and wisdom derived from the Word with a man being the Church with him. Consequently by 'a man' in the aggregate or in general, that is, when a society or assembly is called 'a man,' in the spiritual sense is understood the Church. This is why the prophets were termed 'sons of man' and the Lord Himself called Himself 'the Son of Man,' and 'Son of Man' is the Truth of the Church derived from the Word, and when said of the Lord it is the Word Itself from which the Church is derived. By 'an angel' is signified three things, in the highest sense the Lord, in a general sense heaven or a heavenly society, and in particular Divine Truth. That these three are signified by 'an angel' may be seen (5, 65, 570, 258, 342, 344, 415, 465, 644, 647-648, 657, 718), here the heaven with which the Lord's New Church will make one. That the Church that is derived from the Word, thus is from the Lord, is a Church in consociation with heaven and in conjunction with the Lord, may be seen above (818). It is otherwise with a Church that is not derived from the Word of the Lord.

Apocalypse Revealed (Whitehead translation 1928) 910

910. The measure of a man, which is of an angel, signifies the quality of that church that it makes one with heaven. By "measure" is signified the quality of a thing, (313, 486); by "man" here is signified the church from men, and by "angel" is signified heaven from angels; therefore by "the measure of a man, that is, of an angel," is signified the quality of the church that it makes one with heaven. By "man" in the Word is signified intelligence and wisdom from the Word, (243), and intelligence and wisdom from the Word in man, are the church with him; hence by "man" in the concrete or in general, that is, when a society or assembly is called a man, in the spiritual sense is meant the church. Hence it is, that the prophets were called "sons of man," and that the Lord Himself called Himself "the Son of man," and "the Son of man" is the truth of the church from the Word, and when said of the Lord is the Word itself from which the church exists. By "an angel" three things are signified, in the highest sense the Lord, in a general sense heaven or a heavenly society, and in a particular sense the Divine truth; that these three things are signified by "an angel" may be seen, (5, 65, 170, 258, 342, 344, 415, 465, 644, 647, 648, 657, 718); here it signifies heaven, with which the Lord's New Church will make one. That the church which is from the Word, and thus from the Lord, is in consociation with heaven, and in conjunction with the Lord, may be seen above, (818); but it is otherwise with a church which is not from the Word of the Lord.
