16. I have talked with angels about this on a number of occasions. They have expressed their astonishment that church people do not know that to love the Lord and to love one's neighbor is to love what is good and true and to do them intentionally. They should realize, though, that we demonstrate our love by intending and doing what someone else wants. This is how we become loved in return - not by "loving the other" and not doing what that other wants; in essence, that is not loving at all. They should also realize that the good that comes from the Lord is the Lord's own likeness because he is within it. We become likenesses of him and are united to him when we make what is good and what is true matters of our lives by doing them intentionally, since intending something is loving to do it. The Lord teaches that this is true when he says, "Those who have my commandments and do them are the ones who love me, and I will love them and make my dwelling with them" (John 14:21, 23); and again, "If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love" (John 15:10, 12).

They declared their surprise that men of the Church do not know that loving the Lord and the neighbour is loving good and truth and doing this as a result of willing them, when yet they might know that one shows his love by willing and doing whatever the other wills, and that in this way he is loved in return and is conjoined with the one he loves, not by loving him without doing his will, which in itself is not loving. They also said that men should know that the good going forth from the Lord is a likeness of Himself because He is in it, and that those who make good and truth the principles of their life by intention and action become likenesses of Him and are conjoined to Him. Indeed, to will is to love doing. Besides, the Lord teaches in the Word that this is so, saying,
He that hath My commandments and doeth them, he it is that loveth Me... and I will love him. . . and will make My abode with him. John 14:21, 23.
And again,
If ye do My commandments, ye shall abide in My love. John 15:10, 12.

They were astonished, they said, that men of the church do not know that to love the Lord and to love the neighbor is to love what is good and true, and to do this from the will, when they ought to know that one evinces love by willing and doing what another wishes, and it is this that brings reciprocal love and conjunction, and not loving another without doing what he wishes, which in itself is not loving; also that men should know that the good that goes forth from the Lord is a likeness of Him, since He is in it; and that those who make good and truth to belong to their life by willing them and doing them become likenesses of the Lord and are conjoined to Him. Willing is loving to do. That this is so the Lord teaches in the Word, saying,
He that hath My commandments and doeth them, he it is that loveth Me; and I will love him and will make My abode with him (John 14:21, 23).
And again:
If ye do My commandments ye shall abide in My love (John 15:10 (John 15:12)).
