52. The earthly memory that belongs to the outer self and the spiritual memory that belongs to the inner self. Human beings actually have two faculties of memory, an outer memory and an inner memory, or an earthly memory and a spiritual memory: 2469-2494. We are not aware that we have this inner memory: 2470, 2471. How much better the inner memory is than the outer memory: 2473. The contents of our outer memory are in an earthly light, while the contents of our inner memory are in a spiritual light: 5212. Our inner memory is the basis of our ability to think and speak rationally and with understanding: 9394. Every least detail of everything we have thought and said and done, as well as what we have heard and seen, is inscribed in our inner memory: 2474, 7398. That memory is our book of life: 2474, 9386, 9841, 10505. Our inner memory stores the [truths] that have become part of our faith and the goodness that has become part of our love: 5212, 8067. Our inner memory also stores things that have taken on the force of habit for us and have become part of our life: 9394, 9723, 9841. Knowledge of worldly and spiritual things is stored in our outer memory: 5212, 9922. That information is extremely dark and tangled compared to the contents of our inner memory: 2831. In this world our ability to speak our various languages depends on our outer memory: 2472, 2476. Angels and spirits speak from their inner memory, so they have a universal language such that no matter what country people come from they can talk with each other: 2472, 2476, 2490, 2493. For information about this language, see Heaven and Hell 234-245, and on the astoundingly detailed nature of the inner memory that we retain after death, see Heaven and Hell 463.
52. Not translated.
52. The Natural Memory, which is that of the External Man; and the Spiritual Memory, which is that of the Internal Man. Man has two memories, an exterior and an interior, that is, a natural and a spiritual memory, Arcana Coelestia 2469-2494. The man does not know that he has an interior memory, Arcana Coelestia 2470, 2471. How much the interior memory excels the exterior memory, Arcana Coelestia 2473. The things which are in the exterior memory are in natural light, but the things which are in the interior memory, are in spiritual light, Arcana Coelestia 5212. It is by virtue of the interior memory that a man is able to think and speak intellectually and rationally, Arcana Coelestia 9394. Each and all things which a man has thought, spoken, and done, and which he has heard and seen, are inscribed on his interior memory, Arcana Coelestia 2474, 7398. That memory is a man's book of life, Arcana Coelestia 2474, 9386, 9841, 10505. In the interior memory are [the truths] that have become the subjects of faith, and the goods that have become the subjects of love, Arcana Coelestia 5212, 8067. The things which have become habitual, and have become matters of life, are in the interior memory, Arcana Coelestia 9394, 9723, 9841. Scientifics and knowledges belong to the exterior memory, Arcana Coelestia 5212, 9922; they are very much in the shade and confused, when compared with those things which belong to the interior memory, Arcana Coelestia 2831. Man in the world speaks languages from the exterior memory, Arcana Coelestia 2472, 2476. Spirits and angels speak from the interior memory, and in consequence thereof have a universal language, which is of such a character that all from whatever earth they may be, can converse together, Arcana Coelestia 2472, 2476, 2490, 2493; concerning this language, see the work on Heaven and Hell 234-245; and concerning the wonderful things of the interior memory which remain with man after death, see Arcana Coelestia 463, Ibid.
52. Of the natural memory, which is of the external man, and of the spiritual memory, which is of the internal man.
Man has two memories, an exterior and an interior memory, or a natural and a spiritual memory (n. 2469-2494). Man does not know that he has an interior memory (n. 2470, 2471). How much the interior memory excels the exterior memory (n. 2473). The things in the exterior memory are in natural light, but the things in the interior memory, in spiritual light (n. 5212). It is from the interior memory that man is able to think and speak intellectually and rationally (n. 9394[1-6]). All and every particular which man has thought, spoken, and done, and all that he has heard and seen, are inscribed on his interior memory (n. 2474, 7398). That memory is man's book of life (n. 2474, 9386, 9841, 10505). In the interior memory are the truths which are become of faith, and the goods which are become of love (n. 5212, 8067). The things which are rendered habitual, and have become of the life, are in the interior memory (n. 9394, 9723, 9841). Scientifics and knowledges are of the exterior memory (n. 5212, 9922). They are very obscure and involved, respectively to those things which are of the interior memory (n. 2831). The languages which man speaks in the world are from the exterior memory (n. 2472, 2476). Spirits and angels speak from the interior memory, and consequently their language is universal, being such that all can converse together, of whatever land they may be (n. 2472, 2476, 2490, 2493); concerning which language, see the work on Heaven and Hell (n. 234-245); and concerning the wonders of the interior memory; which remains with man after death (see n. 463).

Quantum memoria interior excellet prae memoria exteriore (Arcana Coelestia 2473).
