Apocalypse Revealed (Rogers translation 2007) 587

587. And it was given authority over every tribe, tongue, and nation. This symbolizes their consequent dominion over everything connected with the church, over everything pertaining to its doctrine and over everything pertaining to its life.

Authority symbolizes dominion, as in no. 575 above. A tribe symbolizes the church in respect to its truths and goods, and in an opposite sense, its falsities and evils (nos. 27, 349). A tongue symbolizes its doctrine (nos. 282, 483). And a nation symbolizes a life in accordance with that doctrine (no. 483).

Apocalypse Revealed (Coulson translation 1970) 587

587. 'And authority was given him over every tribe and tongue and nation' signifies consequent dominion over all things of the Church, both those of its doctrine and those of its life. By 'authority' is signified dominion as above (575); by 'tribe' is signified the Church as to its truths and goods, and in the opposite sense as to its untruths and evils (27, 349); by 'tongue' is signified its doctrine (282, 483); and by 'nation' is signified a life in accordance with that doctrine (483).

Apocalypse Revealed (Whitehead translation 1928) 587

587. And there was given to him authority over every tribe and tongue and nation, signifies thus dominion over all things of the church, both as to its doctrine and as to its life. By "authority" is signified dominion as above, (575); by "tribe" is signified the church as to its truths and goods, and, in an opposite sense, as to its falsities and evils, (27, 349); by "tongue" is signified its doctrine, (282, 483) and by "nation" is signified a life according to it, (483).

Apocalypsis Revelata 587 (original Latin 1766)

587. "Et data ei potestas super omnem tribum et linguam et gentem," significat sic Dominium super omnia Ecclesiae, tam quae ejus doctrinae quam quae ejus vitae sunt. - Per "potestatem" significatur dominium, ut supra (575); per "tribum" significatur Ecclesia quoad vera et bona ejus, et in opposito sensu quoad falsa et mala ejus (27, 349); 1per "linguam" significatur doctrina ejus (282, 483); et per "gentem" significatur vita secundum illam (483).
