Apocalypse Revealed (Rogers translation 2007) 592

592. Anyone who kills with the sword must be killed with the sword. This symbolically means that someone who uses falsities to destroy another's soul is destroyed by falsities and perishes.

Swords symbolize truths, and in an opposite sense, falsity, in both cases combative (no. 52, 836). Thus to kill means, symbolically, to destroy or to cause to perish, and to be killed means to be destroyed or to perish, both of which are occasioned by falsities.

Apocalypse Revealed (Coulson translation 1970) 592

592. 'If anyone slays with the sword, he must be slain with the sword' signifies that he who by means of untruths has destroyed the soul of another is destroyed by untruths and perishes. By 'sword' (gladius), 'short sword' (machaera) and 'long sword' (romphaea) is signified truths, and in the opposite sense untruth, both fighting (52, 836). Consequently by 'to slay' and 'to be slain' is signified to destroy and be destroyed, or to lose and be ruined, which is effected by untruths.

Apocalypse Revealed (Whitehead translation 1928) 592

592. If anyone shall kill with the sword, he must be killed with the sword, signifies that he who by falsities destroys the soul of another, is himself destroyed by falsities, and perishes. By "a sword," "a sabre," and "a long sword," is signified truths, and in the opposite sense, falsity, both combating, (52, 836); therefore by "killing" and "being killed" is signified to destroy and be destroyed, or to destroy and perish, which is effected by falsities.
