223. So that I could learn what their church services are like, I have occasionally been allowed to go in and hear sermons. The preacher in the pulpit is stationed in the east. Directly in front sit the people who are in greater light of wisdom than others, while to their right and left are the people in less light. The seating is laid out in a circular form so that everyone can be seen by the preacher. No one is off to the sides and out of the preacher's sight. Newcomers stand by the door at the eastern end of the church to the left of the pulpit. No one is allowed to stand behind the pulpit; if anyone is there, the preacher loses the train of thought. The same thing happens if anyone in the congregation disagrees, so anyone who does is obliged to look away.
The sermons there are given with such wisdom that their earthly counterparts cannot be compared to them: people in the heavens actually experience a more inward light.
Churches in the spiritual kingdom seem to be made of stone, and those in the heavenly kingdom of wood. This is because stone corresponds to the truth that occupies people in the spiritual kingdom and wood to the good that occupies people in the heavenly kingdom. 1The buildings in this latter kingdom are not called "churches" but "houses of God."
Buildings in the heavenly kingdom are devoid of splendor, but in the spiritual kingdom they are more or less ornate.
Footnotes:
1. Stone means what is true: 114, 643, 1298, 3720, 6426, 8609, 10376. Wood means what is good: 643, 3720, 8354. So for the earliest people, who were attuned to heavenly good, buildings were wooden: 3720.

223. That I might learn about their meetings in temples, I have been permitted at times to attend and to hear the preaching. The preacher stands in a pulpit at the east. Those who are in the light of wisdom more than others sit in front of him, those who are in less light, to the right and left of these. They recline in the form of a circle, so that all are within the preacher's view, no one being at either side so as to be out of his view. At the door, which is at the east of the temple on the left of the pulpit, stand those who are being initiated. No one is permitted to stand behind the pulpit; if there is anyone there, the preacher is confused. It is the same if anyone in the congregation dissents, for which reason he must turn away his face. The preachings are made with such wisdom that they are not comparable with those in the world, for they are in the heavens in an interior light. The temples in the spiritual kingdom seem to be of stone and those in the celestial kingdom of wood. The reason for this is that stone corresponds to truth, in which are those in the spiritual kingdom, while wood corresponds to good 1in which are those who are in the celestial kingdom. In that kingdom the buildings are not called temples but houses of God. In the celestial kingdom they are without magnificence, but in the spiritual kingdom they are more or less magnificent.
Footnotes:
1. "Stone" signifies truth (Arcana Coelestia 114, 643, 1298, 3720, 6426, 8609, 10376).
"Wood" signifies good (Arcana Coelestia 643, 3720, 8354).
On this account the most ancient people, who were in celestial good, had sacred buildings of wood (Arcana Coelestia 3720).

223. That I might learn about their meeting in places of worship, I have been permitted at times to attend and to hear the preaching. The preacher stands in a pulpit at the east. Those who are in the light of wisdom more than others sit in front of him; those who are in less light sit to the right and left of these. There is a circular arrangement of the seats, so that all are in the preacher's view, no one so sitting at either side as to be out of his view. At the entrance, which is at the east of the building and on the left of the pulpit, those stand who are being initiated. No one is permitted to stand behind the pulpit; when there is any one there the preacher becomes confused. It is the same if any one in the congregation dissents; and for this reason the dissenter must needs turn away his face. The wisdom of the preachings is such as to be above all comparison with the preachings of this world, for those in the heavens are in interior light. The church edifices in the spiritual kingdom are apparently built of stone, and those in the celestial kingdom of wood; because stone corresponds to truth, and those who are in the spiritual kingdom are in truth, while wood corresponds to good, and those in the celestial kingdom are in good. 1In that kingdom the sacred edifices are not called churches but houses of God. In that kingdom they are without magnificence; but in the spiritual kingdom they are more or less magnificent.
