Potts(1905-1910) 7721

7721. And Pharaoh called unto Moses. That this signifies the presence of the law Divine, is evident from the signification of "calling unto himself," as being presence (see n. 6177, 7390, 7451); and from the representation of Moses, as being the law Divine (n. 6723, 6752, 7014, 7382). By the presence of the law Divine with those who infest is meant that they perceived whence the plagues came, here whence came that densest falsity from evil which is signified by the "thick darkness." When the evil are being devastated in the other life, they are often allowed to perceive whence they have the evils of punishment, in order that they may know that the Divine is not the cause, but they themselves. Such things often happen also to those who are in hell, but at a time when they are in a quiet state; this is done for many reasons, but chiefly that they may remember the evils which they had done in the world.

Elliott(1983-1999) 7721

7721. 'And Pharaoh called Moses' means the presence of the law of God. This is clear from the meaning of 'calling to oneself' as presence, dealt with in 6177, 7390, 7451; and from the representation of 'Moses' as the law of God, dealt with in 6727, 6752, 7014, 7382. The presence of the law of God with the molesters should not be taken to mean that they perceived where the plagues came from, at this point where the very dense falsity arising from evil, meant by 'thick darkness', came from. When the evil undergo vastation in the next life they are often allowed to perceive the origin of the miseries they suffer when they are punished, in order that they may know that the cause lies not in the Divine but in themselves. Experiences like this also happen quite often to those in hell, though only when they are in a quiescent state. It happens to them for a number of reasons, mainly in order that they may remember the evil deeds they performed in the world.

Latin(1748-1756) 7721

@1 S first wrote plagae quae then d plagae and i mala then d mala and restored plagae mala paene I$
