379、在一夫多妻之间不可能有真正的婚姻之爱;因为一夫多妻摧毁了婚姻之爱的属灵源头(它使二个心智成形为一个心智),因此,内层的结合(它是良善与真理的结合,婚姻之爱的真正本质出于此)也会被摧毁。与多人结婚,像一个理智被分散到数个意志当中;或像一个人依附于数个教会,而不是一个教会,他的信仰会被如此地分心,以至于化为乌有。{注1}天使宣称,娶几个妻子是完全违背神性秩序的,他们知道这一点有多个原因,其中一个原因是:一想到与多个妻子的婚姻,他们就疏离内在的祝福和属天的幸福,变得像醉汉一样,因为良善和它的真理在他们里面分离了。只是怀着一些意图思考这些,他们心智的内层就被带入这种状态,所以他们清楚地感知到,娶多个妻子的婚姻会关闭他们的内在心智,使得婚姻之爱被情欲之爱取代,情欲之爱远离天堂。{注2}

Heaven and Hell #379 (NCE, 2000)

379. Genuine marriage love is not possible between one husband and more than one wife. Polygamy in fact destroys the spiritual source of marriage love, whose purpose is to form one mind out of two. It therefore destroys the deeper union of the good and the true that is the very essence of that love. Marriage with more than one is like an intellect divided among more than one will or like a person pledged to more than one church. This actually pulls faith apart so that it becomes no faith at all.

Angels say that taking more than one wife is absolutely contrary to the divine design and that they know this for many reasons, including the fact that the moment they think about marriage with more than one, they are estranged from their inner blessedness and heavenly happiness. They become virtually drunk because the good is severed from the true within them; and since the deeper levels of their minds come into this kind of state when they simply think about this with some slight intent, they perceive clearly that marriage with more than one woman closes their own inner nature and makes lust invade where there should be marriage love. Lust leads away from heaven. 1

They added that people on earth have a hard time understanding this because so few do experience true marriage love, and if people are not intent on this, they have absolutely no knowledge of the inner delight that dwells within that love. They are aware only of the delight of lust, a delight that turns disagreeable after people have lived together for a little while. The delight of real marriage love, though, not only lasts into old age on earth but even becomes heavenly delight after death, when it is filled with a deeper delight that becomes better and better to eternity.

The angels even said that the blessings of real marriage love could be listed in the thousands, with not a single one known to people here or comprehensible to the understanding of anyone who is not in a marriage of the good and the true from the Lord.

1. Since husband and wife are to be one and are to live together at the very deepest level of life, and since the two together make one angel in heaven, genuine marriage love cannot exist between one husband and more than one wife: 1907, 2740. Taking more than one wife at the same time is contrary to the divine design: 10835 [10837?]. It is clearly perceived by people in the Lord's heavenly kingdom that there is no marriage except between one husband and one wife: 865, 3246, 9902 [9002?], 10172; because angels there are in a marriage of what is good and what is true: 3246. 379. Nor is truly conjugial love possible between one husband and several wives; for its spiritual origin, which is the formation of one mind out of two, is thus destroyed; and in consequence, interior conjunction, which is the conjunction of good and truth, from which is the very essence of that love, is also destroyed. Marriage with more than one is like an understanding divided among several wills; or it is like a man attached not to one but to several churches, since his faith is so distracted thereby as to come to naught. The angels declare that marrying several wives is wholly contrary to Divine order, and that they know this from several reasons, one of which is that, as soon as they think of marriage with more than one, they are alienated from internal blessedness and heavenly happiness, and become like drunken men, because good is separated from its truth with them. And as the interiors of their mind are brought into such a state merely by thinking about it with some intention, they perceive clearly that marriage with more than one would close up their internal mind, and cause conjugial love to be displaced by lustful love, which love withdraws from heaven. 1

[2] They declare further that this is not easily comprehended by men because there are few who are in genuine conjugial love, and those who are not in it know nothing whatever of the interior delight that is in that love, knowing only the delight of lust, and this delight is changed into what is undelightful after living together a short time; while the delight of truly conjugial love not only endures to old age in the world, but after death becomes the delight of heaven and is there filled with an interior delight that grows more and more perfect to eternity. They said also that the varieties of blessedness of truly conjugial love could be enumerated even to many thousands, not even one of which is known to man, or can enter into the comprehension of anyone who is not in the marriage of good and truth from the Lord.
