The New Jerusalem and its Heavenly Teachings (New Century Edition 2020) 216

216. Body and flesh. The Lord's flesh means the divine goodness of his divine love, which is a property of his divine-human nature: 3813, 7850, 9127, 10283. His body means the same thing: 2343, 3735, 6135. Flesh in general means our will and therefore our intrinsic characteristics, which in and of themselves are evil but which mean something good when they have been brought to life by the Lord: 148, 149, 780, 999, 3813, 8409, 10283. So flesh in the Word means the entire human race and every human being: 574, 1050, 10283.

The reason that here and in what follows I mention the symbolism of things is that this is their correspondence; the correspondence of things shapes their symbolism: 2179, 2896, 2987, 2989, 3002, 3225. The Word was written in pure correspondences, and that is the source of its inner or spiritual meaning. Without a knowledge of correspondences we cannot know what that meaning is-we can scarcely know that it exists: 3131, 3472-3485, 8615, 10687. It is through the Word, therefore, that heaven and the people of the church are joined together: 10687. You may find more on this subject in the book Heaven and Hell 303-310, where it deals with heaven's union with the people of the church through the Word.

216. Not translated.

The New Jerusalem and its Heavenly Doctrine (Tafel translation 1911) 216

216. Concerning the Body and Flesh. The Lord's flesh signifies the Divine Good of His Divine Love, which is that of His Divine Human, Arcana Coelestia 3813, 7850, 9127, 10283. His body has a like signification, Arcana Coelestia 2343, 2359, 6135. Flesh in general signifies the Voluntary, and thus the Self (proprium), of man, which regarded in itself is evil but which when vivified by the Lord, signifies good, Arcana Coelestia 148, 149, 780, 999, 3813, 8409, 10283. On this account flesh, in the Word, signifies the whole man, and every man, Arcana Coelestia 574, 1050, 10283.

Here and in what follows, it is said that things signify; the reason is that they correspond; for whatever corresponds, signifies, Arcana Coelestia 2896, 2179, 2987, 2989, 3002, 3225. The Word was written by pure correspondences, whence comes its internal or spiritual sense; and without a knowledge of correspondences it cannot be known what that sense is, and scarcely that it exists, Arcana Coelestia 3131, 3472-3485, 8615, 10687. Wherefore through the Word there is a conjunction of heaven with the man of the Church, Arcana Coelestia 10687. For additional information on this subject see the work on Heaven and Hell 303-310, where the Conjunction of Heaven with the man of the Church through the Word is treated of.

The New Jerusalem and its Heavenly Doctrine (Whitehead translation 1892) 216

216. Of Body and Flesh.

The Lord's "flesh" signifies the Divine good of His Divine love, that is, of His Divine Human (n. 3813, 7850, 9127, 10283). His "body" has a like signification (n. 2343, 3735, 6135). "Flesh" in general signifies the will or proprium of man, which regarded in itself is evil; but which when vivified by the Lord, signifies good (n. 148, 149, 780, 999, 3813, 8409, 10283). Hence "flesh" in the Word, is the whole man, and every man (n. 574, 1050, 10283).

It is said here and in what follows, that these things signify, because they correspond; for whatever corresponds, signifies (see n. 2896, 2979, 2987, 2989, 3002, 3225). The Word is written by mere correspondences, and hence its internal or spiritual sense, the nature of which cannot be known, and scarcely its existence, without a knowledge of correspondences (n. 3131, 3472-3485, 8615, 10687). Therefore there is a conjunction of heaven with the man of the church by the Word (n. 10687). For further particulars on this head see in the work on Heaven and Hell (n. 303-310), where it treats of the Conjunction of Heaven with the Man of the Church by means of the Word.

De Nova Hierosolyma et ejus Doctrina Caelesti 216 (original Latin 1758)
