Other Planets (New Century Edition 2020) 131

131. As for their other qualities, they were modest, rather simple people, but their thinking was quite good. I was able to determine what their faculty of understanding was like from the light that they had, since the understanding we have depends on how receptive we are to the light that exists in the heavens. This is because the divine truth that radiates from the Lord as the sun is what gives light there and makes it possible for angels not only to see but also to understand. 1

Footnotes:

1. [Swedenborg note] There is a great abundance of light in the heavens: 1117, 1521, 1522, 1533, 16191632, 4527, 5400, 8644. All the light in the heavens comes from the Lord as the sun: 1053, 1521, 3195, 3341, 3636, 4415, 9548, 9684, 10809. The divine truth that radiates from the Lord becomes manifest in the heavens as light: 3195, 32223224, 5400, 8644, 9399, 9548, 9684. That light enlightens both the vision and the understanding of angels and spirits: 2776, 3138. Heaven’s light is also what enlightens the understanding of people [in the physical world]: 1524, 3138, 3167, 4408, 6608, 8707, 9128, 9399, 10569.

Worlds in Space (Chadwick translation 1997) 131

131. In other respects they were restrained, rather simple, but still right-thinking enough. The light they had allowed one to infer the nature of their intellectual faculty. For understanding depends upon the way the light of heaven is received, since it is Divine truth proceeding from the Lord as sun which gives light and allows angels not only to see but also to understand. 1

Footnotes:

1. The light in the heavens is strong (Arcana Caelestia 1117, 1521-1522, 1583, 1619-1632, 4527, 5400, 8644). All light in the heavens comes from the Lord, who is the sun there (Arcana Caelestia 1053, 1521, 3195, 3341, 3636, 4415, 9548, 9684, 10809). Divine truth coming forth from the Lord is visible in the heavens as light (Arcana Caelestia 3195, 3222, 5400, 8644, 9399, 9548, 9684). That light enlightens both the sight and the understanding of angels and spirits (Arcana Caelestia 2776, 3138). The light also enlightens the understanding of people in the world (Arcana Caelestia 1524, 3138, 3167, 4408, 6608, 8707, 9128 [9126 in original], Arcana Caelestia 9399, 10569).

Earths in the Universe (Whitehead translation 1892) 131

131. As to the rest, they were modest, and somewhat simple, but yet they thought very well. From the light with them it might be concluded what their intellectual faculty is; for the understanding is according to the reception of the light which is in the heavens; since the Divine truth proceeding from the Lord as a sun is what shines there, and enables the angels not only to see, but also to understand. 1

Footnotes:

1. The light in the heavens is great (Arcana Coelestia 1117, 1521, 1522, 1533, 1619-1632, 4527, 5400, 8644). All the light in the heavens is from the Lord as a sun there (Arcana Coelestia 1053, 1521, 3195, 3341, 3636, 4415, 9548, 9684, 10809). Divine truth proceeding from the Lord appears in the heavens as light (Arcana Coelestia 3195, 3222, 5400, 8644, 9399, 9548, 9684). That light illumines both the sight and the understanding of angels and spirits (Arcana Coelestia 2776, 3138). The light of heaven also illumines the understanding of man (Arcana Coelestia 1524, 3138, 3167, 4408, 6608, 8707, 9128, 9399, 10569).

De Telluribus in Mundo Nostro Solari 131 (original Latin)

Footnotes:
