The New Jerusalem and its Heavenly Teachings (New Century Edition 2020) 172

172. Concerning what is profane and profanation (discussed above in 169 of the teachings). Profanation is a mingling within us of both goodness and evil and of both truth and falsity: 6348. The only people who can profane what is good and true, or the sacred things taught by the church and the Word, are people who first acknowledged and believed them-especially if they have lived by them-but later relapsed from their faith, ceased to believe these things, and lived for themselves and the world: 593, 1008, 1010, 1059, 3398, 3399, 3898, 4289, 4601, 8394, 10287. People who have true beliefs as children but lose those beliefs as adults commit a mild form of profanation; people, however, who as adults become inwardly convinced of the truth of what they were taught but later turn and deny it commit a severe form of profanation: 6959, 6963, 6971. We also commit profanation if we have true beliefs but live an evil life, or if we live a pious life but disbelieve what is true: 8882. If after heartfelt repentance we relapse into our former evils, we commit profanation, and our latter state is then worse than our former one: 8394. People in the Christian world who pollute the holy contents of the Word through unclean thoughts and speech are committing profanation: 4050, 5390. There are various general categories of profanation: 10287.

[2] We cannot profane holy teachings if we have not acknowledged them, and still less if we have not even known about them: 1008, 1010, 1059, 9188, 10284. People within the church are able to profane holy teachings, but those outside the church are not: 2051. Non-Christians cannot commit profanation, because they are outside the church and do not have the Word: 1327, 1328, 2051, 9021. Jews cannot profane the deeper holy teachings of the Word and the church, because they do not acknowledge them: 6963. That is why deeper truths have not been disclosed to Jews, since if they had been disclosed and acknowledged, they would have been profaned: 13398, 3489, 6963.

Profanation is what is meant by the Lord's words cited in 169 above:

When an unclean spirit goes out of someone, it wanders through dry places seeking rest, but finds none. Then it says, "I will go back to my house, the house I left. " When the spirit comes and finds the house empty, swept, and decorated for it, then it goes and recruits seven other spirits worse than itself, and they come in and live there, and the latter times of that person are worse than the first. (Matthew 12:43, 44, 45)

The departure of the unclean spirit from the individual means repentance on the part of those who are consumed with evil; its wandering through dry places and not finding rest means that this is what leading a good life feels like for such people; the house that the spirit finds empty and decorated for itself and therefore reenters means that within themselves and their will such people have no goodness; the seven spirits it recruits and with whom it returns mean the evil that becomes joined to their good actions; and their last state being worse than their first means profanation. This is the inner meaning of the words, for the Lord spoke by means of correspondences.

The meaning of the Lord's words to the man he healed at the pool of Bethesda is much the same: "See, you have been made well. Do not sin anymore, or else something worse than before may come upon you" (John 5:14). There is this statement as well: "He has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts, so that they would not see with their eyes and understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them" (John 12:40). Their turning and being healed would involve the profanation that happens when truth and goodness are acknowledged and then rejected. This, as just noted, would have happened if Jews had turned and been healed.

[3] The fate of profaners in the other life is the worst of all, since the good and true things that they have acknowledged stay with them, as does what is evil and false, and because these cling to each other their life is torn apart: 571, 582, 6348. That is why the Lord takes the greatest possible care to prevent our committing profanation: 2426, 10287. That is why we are kept far from acknowledgment and faith unless we can remain devoted to them to the end of our lives: 3398, 3402. That is why it is sometimes better for us to be kept in ignorance and in outward worship: 301, 302, 303, 1327, 1328. If we have acknowledged and accepted any goodness and truth in the meanwhile, the Lord hides it away in our deeper reaches: 6595.

[4] To prevent profanation, deeper truths are not revealed until the church is at its end: 3398, 3399. That is why the Lord came into the world and opened deeper truths at a time when the church was utterly in ruins: 3398. See what has been cited on this subject in the booklet Last Judgment Babylon Destroyed 73-74.

[5] In the Word, "Babylon" means the profanation of goodness and "Chaldea" means the profanation of truth: 1182, 1283, 1295, 1304, 1306, 1307, 1308, 1321, 1322, 1326. The general categories of profanation correspond to "the degrees of forbidden relations," 2or detestable types of adultery, listed in the Word: 6348. In the Israelite and Jewish church 3profanation was represented by "eating blood" [Genesis 9:4], which is why that was so strictly forbidden: 1003.

3. The terms "the Israelite church" and "the Jewish church" in Swedenborg's usage refer to the Judaism of biblical times as the third in a grand sequence of five "churches" (see note 3 in New Jerusalem 4). In this view, the earthly life and death of Jesus Christ marked the end of ancient Judaism's, and the beginning of Christianity's, role as "the church. " [JSR]

The New Jerusalem and its Heavenly Doctrine (Tafel translation 1911) 172

172. Concerning profanity and profanation, spoken of above in the Doctrine, at Arcana Coelestia 169. Profanation is a commingling with a man, of good and evil, and also of truth and falsity, Arcana Coelestia 6348. None other can profane goods and truths, that is, the holy things of the Church and of the Word, except those who first acknowledge them, believe them, and still more live according to them, and afterwards decline from faith, do not believe the above things, and live for themselves and the world, Arcana Coelestia 593, 1008, 1010, 1059, 3398, 3898, 4289, 4601, 10284, 10287. He who in youth believes truths, and afterwards does not believe them, commits profanation slightly; but he who afterwards confirms himself in truths, and then denies them, commits profanation grievously, Arcana Coelestia 6959, 6963, 6971. They who believe truths, and live badly, also commit profanation; likewise they who do not believe truths, and lead a holy life, Arcana Coelestia 8882. If a man after repentance of heart relapses into his former evils, he commits profanation, and then his latter state is worse than the former, Arcana Coelestia 8394. Those who in the Christian world defile the holy things of the Word by unclean thoughts and speeches, commit profanation, Arcana Coelestia 4050, 5390. There are various kinds of profanation, Arcana Coelestia 10287.

Those who have not acknowledged holy things, cannot profane them, still less those who are not acquainted with them, Arcana Coelestia 1008, 1010, 1059, 9188, 10287. Those who are within the Church are capable of profaning holy things, but not those who are outside of it, Arcana Coelestia 2051. Because the Gentiles are outside the Church, and have not the Word, they cannot commit profanation, Arcana Coelestia 1327, 1328, 2051. Neither can the Jews profane the holy interior things of the Word and the Church, because they do not acknowledge them, Arcana Coelestia 6963. Wherefore interior truths were not disclosed to the Jews; for if they had been disclosed and acknowledged [by them], they would have profaned them, Arcana Coelestia 3398, 3479, 6963. Profanation is meant by the Words of the Lord quoted above at no. 169, "When the unclean spirit goeth out of a man, he passeth through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth it not. Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished. Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more evil than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man becometh worse than the first" (Matthew 12:43-45). By the unclean spirit going out of a man, is signified the repentance of him who is in evil; his passing through dry places and not finding any rest signifies, that the life of good to such a person is of that quality; the house into which he returns, and which he finds empty, swept, and garnished, signifies the man himself and his will, as being without good; the seven spirits which he takes to himself and with whom he returns, signify evil conjoined to good - his [new] state then being worse than his former [state], signifies profanation: this is the internal sense of these words, for the Lord spoke by correspondences. The same thing is meant by the words of the Lord to him whom He cured at the pool of Bethesda, "Behold, thou art made whole; sin no more, lest a worse thing came unto thee than before" (John 5:14). As well as, by these words of the Lord, "He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart, that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them" (John 12:40); where being converted and healed, signifies committing profanation, which takes place when truth and good are acknowledged, and afterwards rejected; this would have taken place, if the Jews had been converted and healed, as was stated above.

The lot of profaners in the other life is the worst of all, because the good and truth which they acknowledged remains, and also the evil and falsity; and since they cohere, there ensues a tearing asunder of the life, Arcana Coelestia 571, 582, 6348. Wherefore the Lord provides most carefully against the commission of profanation, Arcana Coelestia 2426, 10287. A man therefore is withheld from acknowledgment and faith, if he cannot remain therein to the end of his life, Arcana Coelestia 3398, 3402. On this account also a man is rather kept in ignorance and in external worship, Arcana Coelestia 301-303, 1327, 1328. The Lord also hides away in a man's interiors the goods and truths which he has accepted by acknowledgment, Arcana Coelestia 6595.

Lest interior truths should be profaned, they are not revealed before the Church is at its end, Arcana Coelestia 3398, 3399. Wherefore the Lord came into the world, and laid open interior truths, when the Church was wholly vastated, Arcana Coelestia 3398. See what has been adduced on this subject in the work on The Last Judgment and the Destruction of Babylon 73, 74.

Babel, in the Word, signifies the profanation of good, and Chaldea, the profanation of truth, Arcana Coelestia 1182, 1283, 1295, 1304, 1306-1308, 1321, 1322, 1326. These profanations correspond to the prohibited degrees, that is, to the foul adulteries, spoken of in the Word, Arcana Coelestia 6348. Profanation was represented in the Israelitish and Jewish Church by eating blood; wherefore this was so severely prohibited, Arcana Coelestia 1003.

The New Jerusalem and its Heavenly Doctrine (Whitehead translation 1892) 172

172. Of the Profane and Profanation, spoken of above at (n. 169).

Profanation is a commixture of good and evil, as also of truth and falsity in man (n. 6348). None can profane goods and truths, or the holy things of the church and the Word, except those who first acknowledge, believe, and still more live according to them, and afterwards recede from and do not believe, and who live to themselves and the world (n. 593, 1008, 1010, 1059, 3398, 3399, 3898, 4289, 4601, 8394, 10287). He who believes truths in his childhood, and afterwards does not believe them, profanes lightly; but he who confirms truths in himself and after that denies them, profanes grievously (n. 6959, 6963, 6971). They who believe truths, and live evilly, commit profanation; as also they who do not believe truths and live holily (n. 8882). If man, after repentance of heart, relapses to his former evils, he profanes, and then his latter state is worse than his former (n. 8394). Those in the Christian world who defile the holy things of the Word by unclean thoughts and discourses, profane (n. 4050, 5390). There are various kinds of profanation (n. 10287).

They who do not acknowledge holy things cannot profane them, still less they who do not know them (n. 1008, 1010, 1059, 9188, 10287). They who are within the church, can profane holy things, but not they who are out of it (n. 2051). The Gentiles, because out of the church, and who do not have the Word, cannot profane (n. 1327, 1328, 2051, 9021). Neither can the Jews profane the holy interior things of the Word and the church, because they do not acknowledge them (n. 6963). Therefore interior truths were not revealed to the Jews, for if they had been revealed and acknowledged, they would have profaned them (n. 3398, 3479, 6963). Profanation is meant by the words of the Lord above quoted at n. 169:

When the unclean spirit goes out of a man, he walks through dry places, seeking rest, but finding none; then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I went out; and when he comes and finds it empty, and swept, and garnished, then he goes away, and takes to himself seven other spirits worse than himself, and entering in they dwell there, and the latter things of the man become worse than the first (Matt. 12:43-45).

"The unclean spirit going out of a man," signifies the repentance of him who is in evil; his "walking through dry places and not finding rest" signifies that to such a person, a life of good is of that quality; "the house" into which he returned, and which he found empty, swept, and garnished, signifies the man himself, and his will, as being without good. "The seven spirits" which he took to himself and with whom he returned, signify evil conjoined to good; "his state then being worse than his former," signifies profanation. This is the internal sense of these words, for the Lord spoke by correspondences. The same thing is meant by the words of the Lord to the man whom He healed in the Pool of Bethesda:

Behold, thou art made whole; sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee (John 5:14).

Also by these words of the Lord:

He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them (John 12:40).

"To be converted and healed," signifies to profane, which takes place when truth and good are acknowledged, and afterwards rejected, which would have been the case if the Jews had been converted and healed.

The lot of profaners in the other life is the worst of all, because the good and truth which they have acknowledged remain, and also the evil and falsity; and because they cohere, a tearing asunder of the life takes place (n. 571, 582, 6348). The greatest care is therefore taken by the Lord, to prevent profanation (n. 2426, 10287). Therefore man is withheld from acknowledgment and faith, if he cannot remain therein to the end of life (n. 3398, 3402). On this account also man is rather kept in ignorance, and in external worship (n. 301-303, 1327, 1328). The Lord also stores up the goods and truths which man has received by acknowledgment, in his interiors (n. 6595).

Lest interior truths should be profaned, they are not revealed before the church is at its end (n. 3398, 3399). Wherefore the Lord came into the world, and opened interior truths, when the church was wholly vastated (n. 3398). See what is adduced on this subject in the work on The Last Judgment and Babylon Destroyed (n. 73, 74).

In the Word "Babel" signifies the profanation of good, and "Chaldea," the profanation of truth (n. 1182, 1283, 1295, 1304, 1306-1308, 1321, 1322, 1326). These profanations correspond to the prohibited degrees, or foul adulteries, spoken of in the Word (n. 6348). Profanation was represented in the Israelitish and Jewish church by eating blood, wherefore this was so severely prohibited (n. 1003).

De Nova Hierosolyma et ejus Doctrina Caelesti 172 (original Latin 1758)

"Ecce sanus factus es; ne pecca amplius, ne fiat tibi aliquid quod pejus est quam prius" (Johannes 5:14);

Quod ideo a Domino maxime provideatur ne fiat profanatio (Arcana Coelestia 2426, 10384 (10287)).
