The New Jerusalem and its Heavenly Teachings (New Century Edition 2020) 220

220. Eating and drinking. "Eating" means making caring and love our own and being joined to the Lord by them: 2187, 2343, 3168, 3513, 5643. It therefore also means being associated with others: 8001. "Eating" is said of making goodness our own and its becoming a part of us, and "drinking" is said of making truth our own and its becoming a part of us: 3168, 3513, 3832, 9412. The meaning of "eating and drinking in the Lord's kingdom" [Luke 22:30]: 3832. That is why in the Word "being hungry and thirsty" means having a love and a longing for goodness and truth: 4958, 10227.

Because they live in a spiritual world, angels understand all the elements just discussed solely in an internal or spiritual way: 10521. Therefore something holy flows from heaven into people of the church when they take the sacrament of the Supper reverently (6789), and this joins them to the Lord (3464, 3735, 5915, 10519, 10521, 10522).

220. Not translated.

The New Jerusalem and its Heavenly Doctrine (Tafel translation 1911) 220

220. Concerning Eating and Drinking. Eating signifies being appropriated and conjoined through love and charity, Arcana Coelestia 2187, 2343, 3168, 3513, 5643. Hence it signifies being consociated, Arcana Coelestia 8001. Eating is predicated of the appropriation and conjunction of good, and drinking of the appropriation and conjunction of truth, Arcana Coelestia 3168, 3513, 3832, 9412. What is signified by eating and drinking in the Lord's kingdom, Arcana Coelestia 3832. Hence it is, that by being hungry and desiring to eat, in the Word, is signified desiring good and truth from affection, Arcana Coelestia 4958, 10227.

What has here been mentioned the angels do not understand otherwise than according to the internal or spiritual sense, because they are in the spiritual world, Arcana Coelestia 10521. Hence it is that holiness flows in from heaven with the members of the Church, when they partake of the sacrament of the Supper in a holy manner, Arcana Coelestia 6789; and hence there is conjunction with the Lord, Arcana Coelestia 3464, 3735, 5915, 10519, 10521, 10522.

The New Jerusalem and its Heavenly Doctrine (Whitehead translation 1892) 220

220. Of Eating and Drinking.

"To eat" signifies to be appropriated and conjoined by love and charity (n. 2187, 2343, 3168, 3513, 5643). Hence it signifies to be consociated (n. 8001). "To eat" is predicated of the appropriation and conjunction of good, and "to drink," of the appropriation and conjunction of truth (n. 3168, 3513, 3832, 9412). What "eating and drinking in the Lord's kingdom" signifies (n. 3832). Hence it is, that "to be famished" and "hungry," in the Word, signifies to desire good and truth from affection (n. 4958, 10227).

The angels understand the things here spoken of according to their internal or spiritual sense alone, because the angels are in the spiritual world (n. 10521). Hence holiness from heaven flows in with the men of the church, when they receive the Sacrament of the Supper with sanctity (n. 6789). And thence is conjunction with the Lord (n. 3464, 3735, 5915, 10519, 10521, 10522).

De Nova Hierosolyma et ejus Doctrina Caelesti 220 (original Latin 1758)
