391、在天堂,一切社群都根据良善来划分(参看上文41-45节等内容),所以也根据功用来划分,因为良善是行为上的良善,即是仁爱的良善,也就是功用。有些社群负责照顾幼儿,随着他们的成长,有些社群负责指导和教育他们;有些社群负责以同样的方式指导和教育男孩和女孩,他们因在世时所受的教育而获得了良好的性情,因而进入了天堂;有些社群教导来自基督徒中的善良的简单人,引导他们走上天堂之路;有些社群以同样的方式教导并引导不同的非基督徒民族;有些社群保护刚从尘世来的新灵人免受恶灵的侵扰;有些看护在低地{注1}的灵人;有些看护在地狱的灵人,约束他们,不让他们对彼此的折磨超出规定的限度;还有些照顾那些正从死里苏醒复活的人。总的来说,所有社群的天使都被差到世人那里照看他们,引导他们脱离邪恶的情感和由此而来的思想,并照着他们自由接受的程度,逐渐注入良善的情感。天使利用这些,通过尽可能地除去邪恶的动机,来控制人的行为或作为。当天使与人同在时,可以说是住在人的情感中,他们照着人处在由真理而来的良善中的程度而接近人,照着人疏远良善的程度而疏远人。{注2}不过,天使的所有这些职分都是主通过天使而行的,因为天使做这些工作不是凭自己,而是靠着主。因此,在圣经的内义中,“天使”不是指天使,而是指属于主的事物。这也是天使在圣经中被称为“神”的原因。{注3}

Heaven and Hell #391 (NCE, 2000)

391. All the communities in the heavens are differentiated according to their forms of service because they are differentiated according to their virtues, as has been noted above (41-45). Their virtues are virtues in action or acts of thoughtfulness, which are services. There are some communities whose tasks are to take care of babies; there are other communities whose tasks are to teach and lead children while they are growing up; there are other communities that look after young boys and girls who are well disposed because of the way they were raised in this world and have come [straight] to heaven, where they are taught and raised in much the same way. There are some that teach simple people from the Christian world and lead them on the way to heaven, and there are some that do the same for various non-Christian peoples. There are some that protect new spirits, just arrived from the world, from the attacks of evil spirits; and there are some who attend to people in the lower earth. Then there are some who attend to people in the hells and control them so that they do not torture each other beyond set limits. There are also some who tend to people who are being awakened from their death.

Broadly speaking, angels of all communities are assigned to us to protect us, to lead us away from evil feelings and the evil thoughts that these cause and to instill good feelings to the extent that we are freely open to them. These serve to control our deeds or works by removing our evil intentions to the extent that this can be done. When angels are with us they seem to dwell in our affections, near us to the extent that we are engaged in something good because of truth, and distant to the extent that our life is removed from such engagement. 1

However, all these tasks are things the Lord does by means of angels, since angels do them not on their own but from the Lord. This is why in the deeper meaning of the Word "angels" does not mean angels but something of the Lord; and this is why angels are called gods in the Word. 2

Footnotes:

1. On angels with babies and then with children, and thereafter: 2303. We are awakened from death by angels; from experience: 168-189. Angels are sent to people in hell to prevent them from tormenting each other excessively: 967. On the services angels provide to people who are arriving in the other life: 2131. Spirits and angels are with us all, and the Lord is leading us through spirits and angels: 50, 697, 2796, 2887-2888, 5847-5866, 5976-5993, 6209. Angels have power over evil spirits: 1755.

2. "Angels" in the Word means something divine from the Lord: 1925, 2821, 3039, 4085, 6280, 8192. Angels are called gods in the Word because of their openness to divine truth and good from the Lord: 4295, 4402, 8301, 8192.

Heaven and Hell #391 (Harley, 1958)

391. As all the societies in the heavens are distinct in accordance with their goods (as said above, 41, seq.) so they are distinct in accordance with their uses, goods being goods in act, that is, goods of charity which are uses. There are societies employed in taking care of little children; others in instructing and educating them as they grow up; others in instructing and educating in like manner the boys and girls who have acquired a good disposition from their education in the world, and in consequence have come into heaven. There are other societies that teach the simple good from the Christian world, and lead them into the way to heaven; there are others that in like manner teach and lead the various heathen nations. There are some societies that protect from infestations by evil spirits novitiate spirits newly arrived from the world; there are some that attend upon the spirits who are in the lower earth; also some that attend upon spirits who are in the hells, and restrain them from tormenting each other beyond prescribed limits; and there are some that attend upon those who are being raised from the dead. In general, angels from each society are sent to men to watch over them and to lead them away from evil affections and consequent thoughts, and to inspire them with good affections so far as they will receive them in freedom; and by means of these they also control the deeds or works of men by removing as far as possible evil intentions. When angels are with men they dwell, as it were, in their affections; and they are near to man just in the degree in which he is in good from truths, and are distant from him just in the degree in which his life is distant from good. 1But all these employments of angels are employments of the Lord through the angels, for the angels perform them not from themselves but from the Lord. For this reason, in the Word in its internal sense "angels" mean, not angels, but something of the Lord; and this is why angels are called "gods" in the Word. 2

Footnotes:

1. Of the angels who are with little children and afterwards with boys, and thus in succession (Arcana Coelestia 2303).

De Coelo et de Inferno #391 (original Latin)
