The New Jerusalem and its Heavenly Teachings (New Century Edition 2020) 209

209. From Secrets of Heaven

Baptism means regeneration by the Lord by means of truths for our faith that are drawn from the Word: 4255, 5120, 9088, 10239, 10386, 10387, 10388, 10392. Baptism serves as a sign that an individual belongs to the church, where the Lord, who is the source of regeneration, is acknowledged; and where the Word is found, which is the source of the truths for our faith that are the means of our regeneration: 10386, 10387, 10388. Baptism does not give us either faith or salvation, but it bears witness to what we will receive if we are regenerated: 10391.

[2] The washing rituals in the ancient churches and in the Israelite church represented and therefore meant processes of purification from evil and falsity: 3147, 9088, 10237, 10239. The ritual washing of clothes meant purification of the understanding from falsities: 5954. The ritual washing of feet meant purification of the earthly self: 3147, 10241. An explanation of the meaning of the Lord's washing the disciples' feet [John 13:1-11]: 10243.

[3] Waters mean truths that belong to our religious faith: 28, 2702, 3058, 5668, 8568, 10238. Springs and wells of living water mean truths for our faith that come to us from the Lord; therefore they also mean the Word: 3424. Bread and water mean all the goodness that comes from love and all the truths that lead to faith: 4976, 9323. The spirit means a life in accord with truth or with faith: 5222, 9281, 9818. What spirit and flesh are: spirit means life that comes from the Lord and flesh means life that comes from ourselves: 10283. We can therefore see what these words of the Lord mean: "Unless you have been born of water and the spirit you cannot enter the kingdom of God" [John 3:5], namely, that unless we have been regenerated through truths that belong to our religious faith and a life in accord with them, we cannot be saved: 10240. All regeneration is effected by means of truths that belong to religious faith and by a life in accord with them: 1904, 2046, 9088, 9959, 10028.

[4] The complete washing that took place by immersion in the waters of the Jordan meant regeneration itself, just as baptism does: 9088, 10239. The meaning of the waters of the Jordan, and what the Jordan River means: 1585, 4255.

[5] A flood and an inundation of waters mean spiritual crises: 660, 705, 739, 756, 790, 5725, 6853. Baptism also symbolizes spiritual crises: 5120, 10389. How baptism was represented in heaven: 2299.

209. Not translated.

The New Jerusalem and its Heavenly Doctrine (Tafel translation 1911) 209

209. FROM THE HEAVENLY ARCANA.

Baptism signifies regeneration by the Lord through the truths of faith from the Word, Arcana Coelestia 4255, 5120, 9088, 10239, 10386-10388, 10392. Baptism is for a sign that a person is of the Church, in which the Lord is acknowledged from whom is regeneration, and in which there is the Word, from which are the truths of faith, through which regeneration is effected, Arcana Coelestia 10386-10388. Baptism imparts neither faith nor salvation, but testifies that both will be received by those who are regenerated, Arcana Coelestia 10391.

Washings in the Ancient Churches, and in the Israelitish Church, represented, and hence signified, purifications from evils and falsities, Arcana Coelestia 3147 Arcana Coelestia 3147[1-10], 9088, 10237, 10239. The washings of garments signified the purification of the understanding from falsities, Arcana Coelestia 5954. The washing of the feet signified the purification of the natural man, Arcana Coelestia 3147 Arcana Coelestia 3147[1-10], 10241. An explanation of what is signified by the Lord's washing the disciples' feet, Arcana Coelestia 10243.

Waters signify the truths of faith, Arcana Coelestia 28, 2702, 3058, 5668, 8568, 10238. A fountain and a well of living waters signify the truths of faith from the Lord, consequently the Word, Arcana Coelestia 3424. Bread and water signify all the goods of love and all the truths of faith, Arcana Coelestia 4976, 9323. Spirit signifies the life of truth, that is, the life of faith, Arcana Coelestia 5222, 9281, 9818. What is meant by spirit and flesh; spirit signifies life from the Lord, and flesh, life from man, Arcana Coelestia 10283. Hence appears the signification of these words of the Lord: "Unless any one be born of water and the spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God;" namely, that unless any one be regenerated through the truths of faith, and a life in accordance therewith, he cannot be saved, Arcana Coelestia 10240. All regeneration is effected through the truths of faith, and a life in accordance therewith, Arcana Coelestia 1904, 2046, 9088, 9959, 10028.

The complete washing which took place through immersion in the waters of Jordan signified regeneration, just like baptism, Arcana Coelestia 9088, 10239. What was signified by the waters of Jordan, and by Jordan itself, Arcana Coelestia 1585, 4255.

The deluge and a flooding of waters signify temptations, Arcana Coelestia 660, 705, 739, 756, 790, 5725, 6853; the same is signified by baptism, Arcana Coelestia 5120, 10389. How baptism was represented from heaven, Arcana Coelestia 2299.

The New Jerusalem and its Heavenly Doctrine (Whitehead translation 1892) 209

209. FROM THE ARCANA COELESTIA.

Baptism signifies regeneration by the Lord through the truths of faith from the Word (n. 4255, 5120, 9088, 10239, 10386-10388, 10392). Baptism is for a sign that man is of the church, where the Lord is acknowledged, from whom is regeneration, and which has the Word, from which are the truths of faith, by which regeneration is effected (n. 10386-10388). Baptism gives neither faith nor salvation, but testifies that faith and salvation will be received by those who are regenerated (n. 10391).

The washings in the ancient churches, and in the Israelitish church, represented and thence signified purifications from evils and falsities (n. 3147, 9088, 10237, 10239). "The washings of garments" signified the purification of the understanding from falsities (n. 5954). "The washing of the feet" signified the purification of the natural man (n. 3147, 10241). What is signified by "the washing of the disciples' feet" by the Lord, is explained (n. 10243).

"Waters" signify the truths of faith (n. 28, 2702, 3058, 5668, 8568, 10238). "A fountain" and "a well of living waters" signifies the truths of faith from the Lord, thus the Word (n. 3424). "Bread and water" signify all the goods of love and truths of faith (n. 4976, 9323). "Spirit" signifies the life of truth, or the life of faith (n. 5222, 9281, 9818). What "the spirit" and "the flesh" signify, that "the spirit" signifies life from the Lord, and "flesh," life from man (n. 10283). Hence it is evident what is signified by these words of the Lord:

Except a man be begotten of water and the spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God (John 3:5).

Namely, that unless man is regenerated by the truths of faith, and by a life according to them, he cannot be saved (n. 10240). All regeneration is effected by the truths of faith, and by a life according to them (n. 1904, 2046, 9088, 9959, 10028).

The total washing, which was effected by immersion in the waters of the Jordan, signified regeneration itself, in the same manner as baptism (n. 9088, 10239). What "the waters of Jordan," and "Jordan" signified (n. 1585, 4255).

"A flood" and "inundation of waters" signify temptations (n. 660, 705, 639, 756, 790[1-4], 5725, 6853). "Baptism" signifies the same (n. 5120, 10389). In what manner baptism was represented from heaven (n. 2299).

De Nova Hierosolyma et ejus Doctrina Caelesti 209 (original Latin 1758)

Quod "lavationes vestium" significaverint purificationem intellectus a falsis (Arcana Coelestia 5954).

Quod "lavatio pedum" significaverit purificationem naturalis hominis (Arcana Coelestia 3147, 10241).

Explicatur quid significatur per "lavationem pedum discipulorum" a Domino (Arcana Coelestia 10243).

"Nisi quis generatus fuerit ex aqua et spiritu, non potest ingredi in regnum Dei" (Johannes 3:5);

Similiter "Baptismus" (Arcana Coelestia 5120, 10389).

Quomodo repraesentatus est Baptismus e caelo (Arcana Coelestia 2299).
