Other Planets (New Century Edition 2020) 119

119. It is important to know that the Word on our planet, which was given by the Lord through heaven, is what unites heaven and the world. 1To this end there is a correspondence between everything in the literal sense of the Word and divine realities in heaven. It is also important to know that in its highest or deepest sense the Word is about the Lord, about his kingdom in the heavens and on earth, and about the love and faith we receive from him and return to him-that is, about the life we have from him and in him. Things like this are presented before the angels in heaven when the Word is read and preached on our planet. 2

Footnotes:

1. For more on the union of heaven and the world in and through the Word, see Secrets of Heaven 2310, 3476, 9216:3; Heaven and Hell 258-259, 303-310; True Christianity 267-276. [LSW]

2. [Swedenborg note] The Word is understood differently by angels in the heavens than by us on earth: the meaning they take from it is internal and spiritual; the meaning we take from it is external and earthly: 17691772, 1887, 2143, 2333, 2395, 2540, 2541, 2545, 2551. The Word is what unites heaven and earth: 2310, 2895, 9212, 9216, 9357, 10375. Therefore the Word was written entirely by means of correspondences: 1404, 1408, 1409, 1540, 1619, 1659, 1709, 1783, 8615, 10687. In the deepest sense of the Word the only subject is the Lord and his kingdom: 1873, 2249, 2523, 7014, 9357.

Worlds in Space (Chadwick translation 1997) 119

119. It needs to be known that the Word in our world, which was given to us by the Lord by means of heaven, is the bond which unites heaven and the world. It is for this purpose that everything in the literal sense of the Word corresponds to Divine things in heaven, and the Word in its highest and innermost sense refers to the Lord, His kingdom in the heavens and on earth, love and faith coming from Him and directed to Him, and so life coming from and being in Him. These subjects are what is presented to the angels in heaven, when the Word of our world is read and preached. 1

Footnotes:

1. Angels in the heavens and people on earth understand the Word differently; the angels follow its inner or spiritual sense, people here its outer or natural sense (Arcana Caelestia 1769-1772, 1887, 2143, 2333, 2395 [2396 in original], Arcana Caelestia 2540-2541, 2545, 2551). The Word is a unifying bond between heaven and earth (Arcana Caelestia 2310, 2895 [2495 in original], Arcana Caelestia 9212, 9216, 9357, 10375). The Word was therefore written entirely by means of correspondences (Arcana Caelestia 1404, 1408-1409, 1540, 1619, 1659, 1709, 1783, 8615, 10687). The inmost sense of the Word deals exclusively with the Lord and His kingdom (Arcana Caelestia 1873, 2249, 2523, 7014, 9357).

Earths in the Universe (Whitehead translation 1892) 119

119. It is to be known that the Word on our earth, given through heaven from the Lord, is the union of heaven and the world; for which end there is a correspondence of all things contained in the letter of the Word with the Divine things in heaven; and the Word in its supreme and inmost sense treats of the Lord, of His kingdom in the heavens and the earths, and of love and faith from Him and in Him, consequently of life from Him and in Him. Such things are presented to the angels in heaven, when the Word of our earth is read and preached. 1

Footnotes:

1. The Word is understood by the angels in the heavens differently from what it is understood by men on the earths, and that the internal or spiritual sense is for the angels but the external or natural sense for men (Arcana Coelestia 1769-1772, 1887, 2143, 2333, 2396, 2540, 2541, 2545, 2551). The Word is conjunctive of heaven and earth (Arcana Coelestia 2310, 2495, 9212, 9216, 9357, 10357). The Word therefore is written by mere correspondences (Arcana Coelestia 1404, 1408, 1409, 1540, 1619, 1659, 1709, 1783, 8615, 10687). In the inmost sense of the Word the Lord alone and His Kingdom are treated of (Arcana Coelestia 1873, 2249, 2523, 7014, 9357).
