Other Planets (New Century Edition 2020) 86

86. As spirits and angels see it, the planet Mars, like other planets in various locations, seems to have its own constant place-a little way out in front, to the left, at the level of the chest, and therefore outside the region where the spirits from our planet live.

The spirits from one planet are kept apart from the spirits of another planet because the spirits of each planet are associated with some particular district in the universal human 1and are therefore in a different state. Difference of state makes them seem more or less widely separated from each other, either to the right or to the left. 2

Footnotes:

1. [Swedenborg note] See note in 5.

2. [Swedenborg note] Distances in the other life are manifestations of realities that the Lord makes visible according to the deeper states of angels and spirits: 5605, 9104, 9440, 10146.

Worlds in Space (Chadwick translation 1997) 86

86. The planet Mars is thought of by spirits and angels as occupying a fixed position, as the other planets do; this lies in front to the left, some distance away at chest level, that is to say, outside the sphere where the spirits of our world are. The spirits of one world are separated from those of another, because the spirits of each world answer to some particular province in the Grand Man. 1As a result their states are not the same but diverse, and this diversity of state makes them appear separated from one another, either to the right or to the left, and at a greater or lesser distance. 2

Footnotes:

1. Heaven has a correspondence to the Lord, and a human being has in every detail a correspondence to heaven, so that in the Lord's eyes heaven is a man on the grand scale, and may be called the Grand Man (Arcana Caelestia 2996, 2998, 3624-3649 [original adds 3636-3643], Arcana Caelestia 3741-3745, 4625). The whole subject of the correspondence of man and all his parts to the Grand Man who is heaven has been described from experience (Arcana Caelestia 3021, 3624-3649, 3741-3750 [3741 in original], Arcana Caelestia 3883-3896, 4039-4055 [4051 in original], Arcana Caelestia 4218-4228, 4318-4331, 4403-4421, 4523-4533 [from 4527 in original], Arcana Caelestia 4622-4633, 4652-4660, 4791-4805, 4931-4953, 5050-5061, 5171-5189, 5377-5396, 5552-5573, 5711-5727, 10030).

2. Distances in the next life appear real, and are rendered visible according to the inner states of angels and spirits (Arcana Caelestia 5605 [5604 in original], Arcana Caelestia 9104, 9440, 10146).

Earths in the Universe (Whitehead translation 1892) 86

86. The planet Mars in the idea of spirits and angels, like the other planets, appears constantly in its place, which is to the left in front, at some distance, in the plane of the breast, and so out of the sphere where the spirits of our earth are. The spirits of one earth are separate from the spirits of another earth, because the spirits of each earth refer to some particular province in the Greatest Man, and hence are in another and different state; and diversity of state makes them appear separate from each other, either to the right or to the left, at a greater or less distance. 1

Footnotes:

1. Distances in the other life are real appearances, which are presented by the Lord to be seen, according to the state of the interiors of angels and spirits (Arcana Coelestia 5604, 9104, 9440, 10146).

De Telluribus in Mundo Nostro Solari 86 (original Latin)

1. [NCBSP: In the Latin text, Swedenborg's footnote refers back to footnote 1 of section 5.]

2. Quod distantiae in altera vita sint apparentiae reales, quae a Domino sistuntur videndae secundum status interiorum Angelorum et Spirituum, Arcana Coelestia 5604, 9104, 9440, 10146
