The New Jerusalem and its Heavenly Teachings (New Century Edition 2020) 82

82. Our own intrinsic characteristics, as mentioned above in the teachings in 70, are love for ourselves and love for the world. Our intrinsic characteristics are evil through and through: 210, 215, 731, 874, 875, 876, 987, 1047, 2307, 2308, 3518, 3701, 3812, 8480, 8550, 10283, 10284, 10286, 10731. The part of us that belongs to ourselves is our will: 4328. What is intrinsic to us is our loving ourselves more than God, loving the world more than heaven, and regarding our neighbor as nothing in comparison to the self, so it is love for ourselves and love for the world: 694, 731, 4317, 5660. From this intrinsic selfhood of ours gushes not only everything evil but everything false as well, and this falsity is the kind that comes from evil intent: 1047, 10283, 10284, 10286. This selfhood is hell for us: 694, 8480. So no one led by his or her own selfhood can be saved: 10731. Anything good that we do from this selfhood of ours is not good but is essentially evil because it is done for selfish and worldly reasons: 8480.

This selfhood needs to be put aside so that the Lord can be present: 1023, 1044. It is effectively put aside when we are being reformed: 9334, 9335, 9336, 9452, 9453, 9454, 9938. This is done by the Lord alone: 9445. We are given a heavenly selfhood through rebirth: 1937, 1947, 2882, 2883, 2891. Although this heavenly selfhood seems to us to belong to ourselves, it is not ours but is something within us that belongs to the Lord: 8497. When we have this kind of selfhood we have true freedom, because freedom is being led by the Lord and by his kind of selfhood: 892, 905, 2872, 2886, 2890, 2891, 2892, 4096, 9586, 9587, 9589, 9590, 9591. All our freedom is experienced in our sense of self, and what our freedom is like depends on what our selfhood is like: 2880. The nature of a heavenly selfhood: 164, 5660, 8480. How a heavenly selfhood is planted in us: 1712, 1937, 1947.

82. Not translated.

The New Jerusalem and its Heavenly Doctrine (Tafel translation 1911) 82

82. Man's Self (proprium) (concerning which see the Doctrine at Arcana Coelestia 70), that it is the Love of Self and the World. A man's Self (proprium) is nothing but dense evil, Arcana Coelestia 210, 215, 731, 874-876, 987, 1047, 2307, 2308, 3518, 3701, 3812, 8480, 8550, 10283, 10284, 10286, 10731. The Self (proprium) of a man is his voluntary [or will] part, Arcana Coelestia 4328. A man's Self (proprium) consists in his loving himself more than God, and the world more than heaven, and in holding the neighbour of no account, in comparison with himself; thus it consists in the love of self and the world, Arcana Coelestia 694, 731, 4317, 5660. Not only all evil, but also all falsity, spring from a man's Self (proprium); and this falsity the falsity of evil, Arcana Coelestia 1047, 10283, 10284, 10286. A man's Self (proprium) is hell with him, Arcana Coelestia 694, 8480. Whoever therefore is led by Self (proprium) cannot be saved, Arcana Coelestia 10731. The good which a man does from Self (proprium) is not good, but in itself is evil, because it is done for the sake of self and of the world, Arcana Coelestia 8480.

The man's Self (proprium) must be separated, in order that the Lord may be present, Arcana Coelestia 1023, 1044. And it is actually separated when the man is being reformed, Arcana Coelestia 9334-9336, 9452, 9454, 9938. This is done by the Lord alone, Arcana Coelestia 9445. By regeneration a man receives a heavenly Self (proprium), Arcana Coelestia 1937, 1947, 2881, 2883, 2891. This appears to him as Self (proprium); yet it is not his, but the Lord's with him, Arcana Coelestia 8497. Those who are in this Self (proprium) are in freedom itself, because freedom consists in being led by the Lord and by His Self (proprium), Arcana Coelestia 892, 905, 2872, 2886, 2890-2892, 4096, 9586, 9587, 9589-9591. All freedom is from self (proprium), and its quality is according thereto, Arcana Coelestia 2880. The quality of the heavenly self (proprium), Arcana Coelestia 164, 5660, 8480. How the heavenly self (proprium) is implanted, Arcana Coelestia 1712, 1937, 1947.

The New Jerusalem and its Heavenly Doctrine (Whitehead translation 1892) 82

82. Of the proprium of man, spoken of above (n. 70), that it is the love of self and of the world.

The proprium of man is nothing but dense evil (n. 210, 215, 731, 874-876, 987, 1047, 2307, 2308, 3518, 3701, 3812, 8480, 8550, 1 0283, 10284, 10286, 10731). The proprium of man is his will (n. 4328). The proprium of man consists in loving himself more than God, and the world more than heaven, and in making his neighbor of no account respectively to himself, thus it is the love of self and of the world (n. 694, 731, 4317, 5660). Not only every evil, but also every falsity, springs from the proprium of man, and this falsity is the falsity of evil (n. 1047, 10283, 10284, 10286). The proprium of man is hell with him (n. 694, 8480). Therefore he who is led by his proprium cannot be saved (n. 10731). The good which man does from the proprium is not good, but in itself is evil, because done for the sake of self and the world (n. 8478).

The proprium of man must be separated, in order that the Lord may be present with him (n. 1023, 1044). And it is actually separated when man is reformed (n. 9334-9336, 9452-9454, 9938). This is done by the Lord alone (n. 9445). Man by regeneration receives a heavenly proprium (n. 1937, 1947, 2881, 2883, 2891). This appears to man as his own proprium, but it is not his, but the Lord's with him (n. 8497). They who are in this proprium are in liberty itself, because liberty consists in being led by the Lord, and by His proprium (n. 892, 905, 2872, 2886, 2890-2892, 4096, 9586, 9587, 9589-9591). All liberty is from the proprium, and its quality according thereto (n. 2880). What is the quality of the heavenly proprium (n. 164, 5660, 8480). How the heavenly proprium is implanted (n. 1712, 1937, 1947).

De Nova Hierosolyma et ejus Doctrina Caelesti 82 (original Latin 1758)

Quale proprium caeleste (Arcana Coelestia 164, 5660, 8480).

Quomodo implantatur proprium caeleste (Arcana Coelestia 1712, 1937, 1947).
