The New Jerusalem and its Heavenly Teachings (New Century Edition 2020) 258

258. There is a spiritual meaning in the Word that is known as "the inner meaning. " No one who does not know what correspondence is can know what the inner meaning of the Word is: 2895, 4322. Absolutely everything in the earthly world, right down to the smallest details, corresponds to and therefore means something spiritual: 2987-3003, 3213-3227. The spiritual realities to which earthly things correspond take on different guises on the earthly level and therefore are not recognized: 1887, 3632, 8920. Hardly anyone nowadays knows where in the Word its divine quality resides, when in fact it is in its inner or spiritual meaning-and people nowadays do not even know that this meaning exists: 4989, 9280. The mystical dimension of the Word is precisely that the contents of its inner or spiritual meaning deal with the Lord, his kingdom, and the church, and not with earthly things that take place in this world: 4923. In many passages the statements of the prophets are unintelligible and therefore of no use apart from their inner meaning: 2608, 8020, 8398 (which provide some examples). For example, the meaning of the white horse in the Book of Revelation (2760 following); the meaning of the keys of the kingdom of the heavens that were given Peter (preface Genesis 22, 9410); the meaning of flesh, blood, bread, and wine in the Holy Supper, and therefore why it was instituted by the Lord (8682); the meaning of Jacob's prophecies about his sons in Genesis 49 (6306, 6333-6465); the meanings of many of the prophecies about Judah and Israel, prophecies that in their literal meaning contradict each other and do not square with [the actual history of] that people (6333, 6361, 6415, 6438, 6444); and countless other passages (2608).

An overview of the inner or spiritual meaning of the Word: 1767-1777, 1869-1879. There is deeper meaning throughout the Word and in every detail of it: 1143, 1984, 2135, 2333, 2395, 2495, 2619. These meanings are not visible in the literal meaning, but they are there within: 4442.

The New Jerusalem and its Heavenly Doctrine (Tafel translation 1911) 258

258. In the Word there is a Spiritual Sense, which is called the Internal Sense. No one can know what the internal sense of the Word is, unless he knows what correspondence is, Arcana Coelestia 2895, 4322. Each and all things down to the minutest singular, in the natural world, correspond to spiritual things, and therefore are significative of these things, Arcana Coelestia 1886-1889, 2987-3003, 3213-3227. The spiritual things to which natural things correspond, present themselves in the Natural under a different appearance, so as not to be recognized, Arcana Coelestia 1887, 2395, 8920. Scarcely any one at the present day knows wherein the Divinity of the Word resides, when yet it is in its internal, that is, in its spiritual sense, the existence of which is unknown at the present day, Arcana Coelestia 2899, 4989. The mystical [element] of the Word is nothing else than the contents of its internal or spiritual sense, which treats of the Lord, His kingdom, and the Church, and not of the natural things which are in the world, Arcana Coelestia 4923. In most places, the prophetic portions are not understood, and thus are of no use apart from the internal sense; shewn by examples, Arcana Coelestia 2608, 8020, 8398. As for instance, by the signification of the White Horse, in the Apocalypse, Arcana Coelestia 2760 Arcana Coelestia 2760[1-2] et seq.; by that of the Keys of the Kingdom of the heavens which were given to Peter (see Preface to Chapter xxii. of Genesis, Arcana Coelestia 9410); by that of flesh, blood, bread, and wine, in the Holy Supper, and thus why it was instituted by the Lord (see Arcana Coelestia 8602); further, by the signification of the prophecies of Jacob concerning his sons, in Chapter xlix. of Genesis, Arcana Coelestia 6306, 6333-6465; and by that of many prophecies concerning Judah and Israel, which are not at all in keeping with that people, and do not harmonize according to the sense of the letter, Arcana Coelestia 6333, 6361, 6415, 6438, 6444. Besides innumerable other instances, Arcana Coelestia 2608.

A summary of the internal or spiritual sense of the Word, Arcana Coelestia 1767-1777, 1869-1879. In each and all things of the Word there is an internal sense, Arcana Coelestia 1143, 1984, 2135, 2333, 2395, 2495, 2619. These things do not appear in the sense of the letter, but are nevertheless inwardly contained in it, Arcana Coelestia 4442.

The New Jerusalem and its Heavenly Doctrine (Whitehead translation 1892) 258

258. In the Word there is a spiritual sense, which is called the internal sense.

No one can know what the internal sense of the Word is, unless he knows what correspondence is (n. 2895, 4322). The whole and every part, even to the most minute, of the natural world, corresponds to spiritual things, and thence is significative of them (n. 1886-1889, 2987-3003, 3213-3227). The spiritual things to which natural things correspond assume another appearance in the natural, so that they are not distinguished (n. 1887, 2395, 8920). Scarcely anyone knows at this day, where, or in what part is the Divine of the Word, when nevertheless it is in its internal or spiritual sense, which at this day is not known (n. 2899, 4989). The mystic things of the Word are nothing else than what its internal or spiritual sense contains, which treats of the Lord, of His kingdom, and of the church, and not of the natural things which are in the world (n. 4923). The prophetic parts of the Word are in many places unintelligible, and therefore of no use without the internal sense; illustrated by examples (n. 2608, 8020, 8398). As what is signified by "the white horse," mentioned in Revelation (n. 2760[1-2].). By "the keys of the kingdom of the heavens" that were given to Peter, see the Preface to the 22 nd (Arcana Coelestia 9410) chapter of Genesis (n. 9410). By "the flesh," "blood," "bread," and "wine," in the Holy Supper, and thus why it was instituted by the Lord (n. 8682). By the prophecies of Jacob concerning his sons in the 49th chapter of Genesis (n. 6306, 6333-6465). By many prophecies concerning Judah and Israel, which by no means tally with that people, nor in the literal sense have any coincidence with their history (n. 6333, 6361, 6415, 6438, 6444). Besides innumerable other instances (n. 2608).

Of the spiritual or internal sense of the Word in a summary (n. 1767-1777, 1869-1879). There is an internal sense in the whole and in every particular part of the Word (n. 1143, 1984, 2135, 2333, 2395, 2495, 2619). Such things do not appear in the sense of the letter, but nevertheless they are contained within it (n. 4442).

De Nova Hierosolyma et ejus Doctrina Caelesti 258 (original Latin 1758)

Praeter innumera alia (Arcana Coelestia 2608).
