47. From Secrets of Heaven
On our inner and outer natures. While it is recognized in the Christian world 1that we have an inner level and an outer level or an inner self and an outer self, there is little knowledge of the nature of either: 1889, 1940. The inner self is spiritual and the outer self is earthly: 978, 1015, 4459, 6309, 9701-9708. An inner self that is spiritual is formed into an image of heaven, and an outer self that is earthly is formed into an image of this world-how this happens, and how it is the reason the ancients called the human being a microcosm: 3628, 4523, 4524, 6057, 6314, 9706, 10156, 10472. This means that the spiritual world and the earthly world are joined together in us: 6057, 10472. It means that we have the ability to look upward toward heaven and downward toward earth: 7601, 7604, 7607. When we look up we are in heaven's light and see what it shows us, while when we look down we are in the world's light and see what it shows us: 3167, 10134. In humankind a pathway has been created from the spiritual world into the earthly one: 3702, 4042.
[2] The inner self (which is spiritual) and the outer self (which is earthly) are completely distinct from each other: 1999, 2018, 3691, 4459. The distinction is like that between a cause and its effect and like that between what is prior and what is subsequent; it is not along a continuum: 3691, 4145, 5146, 5711, 6275, 6284, 6299, 6326, 6465, 8603, 10076, 10099, 10181. So the difference is like that between heaven and this world or between something spiritual and something earthly: 6055. Our inner and outer natures are not along a continuum but are separated on distinctly different levels that have well-defined boundaries: 3691, 4145, 5114, 6326, 6465, 8603, 10099. Anyone who does not perceive the distinctions between our inner and outer natures in keeping with their levels and who does not understand what the levels are like cannot comprehend our inner and outer selves: 5146, 6465, 10099, 10181. Things that are on a higher level are more perfect than things that are on a lower level: 3405. There are three levels in us that are in accord with the three heavens: 4154. The outer things in us are relatively remote from the Divine, so they are more obscure and general: 6451. They are also relatively disorganized: 996, 3855. Inner things are more perfect because they are closer to the Divine: 5146, 5147. There are thousands upon thousands of things in our inner self that appear as one general thing in the outer self: 5707. So the more inward our thinking and perception are, the clearer they are: 5920. It follows then that we should concentrate on what lies in the deeper levels: 1175, 4464.
[3] When we are focused on love and caring, the deeper levels of our mind are actually raised up by the Lord. Otherwise they would face downward: 6952, 6954, 10330. When our inner natures are actively raised up by the Lord, the result is an inflow and enlightenment for us out of heaven: 7816, 10330. When we turn our attention to spiritual matters we are raised up: 9922. To the extent that we are raised up from outward concerns toward inward ones we come into the light and therefore into intelligence; or as the ancients used to say, this happens when the mind withdraws from sense impressions: 6183, 6313. Being raised up from outward to inward concerns is like being lifted out of a fog into the light: 4598.
[4] The inflow from the Lord comes through our inner self into our outer self: 1940, 5119. There can be an inflow from our inner self into our outer self, because inflow is spiritual, not physical-that is, there can be a flow from the spiritual self into the earthly self but not from the earthly self into the spiritual self: 3219, 5119, 5259, 5427, 5428, 5477, 6322, 9110. From the inner realm, where it is peaceful, the Lord governs the outer realm, where it is chaotic: 5396a.
[5] The inner self can see everything in the outer self, but not the reverse: 1914, 1953, 5427, 5428, 5477. While we are living in this world, the thinking in our outer self comes from our inner self; our spiritual thinking flows into our earthly thinking and presents itself in earthly forms: 3679. When we are thinking well, those thoughts are coming from our inner or spiritual self into our outer or earthly self: 9704, 9705, 9707. How the outer self thinks and intends depends on its relationship with the inner self: 9702, 9703.
There is inner thinking and there is outer thinking: 2515, 2552, 5127, 5141, 5168, 6007 (which include information about what each type of thinking is like). As long as we are living in this world we do not perceive the thinking and feeling that are going on in our inner self; we perceive only the thinking and feeling that result from this in our outer self: 10236, 10240. In the other life, though, our outer layer is stripped away and we are brought into our true inner nature: 8870. We can then see what inner things are like: 1806, 1807.
[6] Our inner self produces our outer self: 994, 995. The inner self then clothes itself in whatever enables it get results in the outer self (6275, 6284, 6299) and to live in the outer self (1175, 6275). When the Lord regenerates us, he joins our inner or spiritual self to our outer or earthly self: 1577, 1594, 1904, 1999. The outer or earthly self is then put in its rightful place by means of the inner or spiritual self and becomes subservient: 9708.
[7] The outer self needs to be subservient and subject to the inner self: 5077, 5125, 5128, 5786, 5947, 10272. The outer self was designed and created to serve the inner self: 5947. The inner self must be the master and the outer self a servant and in a certain respect even a slave: 10471.
[8] The outer self needs to correspond to the inner in order for the two to be joined together: 5427, 5428. What the outer self is like when it corresponds to the inner self and what it is like when it does not: 3493, 5422, 5423, 5427, 5428, 5477, 5512. There are things in the outer self that correspond to and stand in harmony with the inner, and there are things that do not correspond or stand in harmony: 1563, 1568.
[9] The outer self derives its nature from the inner: 9912, 9921, 9922. How great the beauty of the outer self is when it is joined to the inner self (1590) and how ugly it is when it is not (1598). Love for the Lord and caring about our neighbor join the outer self to the inner: 1594. Unless the inner self is joined to the outer there is no fruitfulness: 3987.
[10] Things that are deep within flow down into more outward levels by stages until finally they flow into the outermost or last, which is where they become manifest together and persist: 634, 6239, 9216. They not only flow in by stages, they also all come together on the last [and lowest] level in accord with the design: 5897, 6451, 8603, 10099. All that lies within is held in a connection from first to last: 9828. This also gives things that are on the outermost level strength and power: 9836. The result is that answers and revelations come through the outermost level: 9905, 10548. This is also why the outermost level is more holy than the inner levels: 9824. So in the Word, "the First and the Last" means every single thing and therefore all there is: 10044, 10329, 10335.
[11] The inner self is open when we are in accord with the divine design and closed when we are not in accord with the divine design: 8513. Without the inner self, heaven has no way of being joined to the outer self: 9380. Both evils and the falsities that come from them close the inner self and limit us to the outermost level (1587, 10492); especially evils that result from self-love (1594). If we refuse to receive what flows in from the Divine, our deeper levels are closed until we are reduced to the sensory level, which is the last [and lowest]: 6564. In the intelligent and learned of this world who take stances against the truths of heaven and the church on the basis of facts they have learned, the inner level is more completely closed than it is for similarly minded simple people: 10492.
[12] Since the inner self is in heaven's light and the outer is in this world's light, if we are focused on the outer to the exclusion of the inner (that is, if our inner self is closed) we have no appetite for profound truths about heaven and the church: 4464, 4946. In that case, in the other life we cannot bear things of an internal nature: 10694, 10701, 10707. We do not believe anything: 10396, 10400, 10411, 10429. We love ourselves and the world more than anything else: 10407, 10412, 10420. No matter how we may seem outwardly, our deeper levels-the processes of our thinking and feeling-are ugly, foul, and profane: 1182, 7046, 9962. Our ideas and thinking are materialistic and not in the least spiritual: 10582. What we are like when our inner level, which faces heaven, is closed: 4459, 9709, 10284, 10286, 10429, 10472, 10492, 10602, 10683.
[13] As our inner, spiritual self is more and more opened, the kinds of goodness and truth we have multiply; as our inner, spiritual self is more and more closed, the kinds of goodness and truth we have disappear: 4099. The church exists in our inner, spiritual self because that self is in heaven; it does not exist in our outer self apart from the inner: 10698. Therefore if we do not have the church in our internal life, having the trappings of it in our external life does nothing for us: 1795. Outward worship apart from inner worship is no worship at all: 1094, 1175. About people who are focused on the inner aspects of the church, worship, and the Word; people who are focused on outward aspects that contain the inner; and people who are focused on outward aspects that lack the inner: 10683. When the inner aspects are lacking, the outward aspects take on a hardness: 9377, 10429.
[14] Merely earthly people are an embodiment of hell unless they become spiritual by means of regeneration: 10156. Everyone who is absorbed in the outer level apart from anything inner, or anyone whose inner, spiritual self is closed, is in hell: 9128, 10483, 10489.
[15] Our inner selves turn actively toward the things we love: 10702. Absolutely everything must have both an inner level and an outer level if it is to exist at all: 9473.
[16] In the Word, "lofty and high" means inner: 1735, 2148, 4210, 4599. So in the Word, "higher" means more inward and "lower" means more outward: 3084.

1. The reference to the recognition of the concept of inner and outer selves "in the Christian world" may point to such passages in the Epistles as Romans 7:22-23; 2 Corinthians 4:16. Jesus also refers metaphorically to the inner and outer self in Matthew 23:25-28; Luke 11:37-41. [SS]

47. FROM THE HEAVENLY ARCANA.
The Internal and the External with man. It is known in the Christian world, that man has an Internal and an External, that is, an internal and an external man; but little is known of the quality of either, Arcana Coelestia 1889, 1940. The internal man is spiritual, and the external is natural, Arcana Coelestia 978, 1015, 4459, 6309, 9701-9709. How the internal man which is spiritual, is formed according to the image of heaven; and the external man which is natural, according to the image of the world; wherefore, man was called by the Ancients a microcosm, Arcana Coelestia 3628, 4523, 4524, 6057, 6314, 9706, 10156, 10472. The spiritual and natural worlds, therefore, are conjoined in man, Arcana Coelestia 6057, 10472. Man, consequently, is of such a quality, that he is able to look upwards towards heaven, and downwards towards the world, Arcana Coelestia 7601, 7604, 7607. When he looks upwards, he is in the light of heaven and sees from it; but when he looks downwards, he is in the light of the world and sees from it, Arcana Coelestia 3167, 10134. With man there is a descent from the spiritual world into the natural, Arcana Coelestia 3702, 4042.
The internal man which is spiritual, and the external man which is natural, are altogether distinct, Arcana Coelestia 1999, 2018, 3691, 4459. The distinction is as between cause and effect, and between what comes first (prior) and afterwards (posterior), and there is no continuity, Arcana Coelestia 3691, 5145, 5146, 5711, 6275, 6284, 6299, 6326, 6465, 8603, 10076, 10099, 10181. The distinction, consequently, is as between heaven and the world, or between the Spiritual and the Natural, Arcana Coelestia 4524, 5128, 5639. The interiors and exteriors of man are not continuous, but distinct according to degrees, and each degree is bounded, Arcana Coelestia 3691, 4145, 5114, 6326, 6465, 8603, 10099. Whoever does not perceive the distinctions, according to degrees, of man's interiors and exteriors, and who does not understand the quality of these degrees, cannot comprehend man's Internal and External, Arcana Coelestia 5146, 6465, 10099, 10181. The things which are in a higher degree are more perfect than those which are in a lower, Arcana Coelestia 3405. There are in man three degrees according to the three heavens, Arcana Coelestia 4154. The exteriors with man are more remote from the Divine, and therefore are respectively obscure; they are also general, Arcana Coelestia 6451; comparatively they are also without order, Arcana Coelestia 996, 3855. The interiors are more perfect, because nearer to the Divine, Arcana Coelestia 5146, 5147. In the Internal there are thousands and thousands of things, which in the External appear as one general thing, Arcana Coelestia 5707. Therefore thought and perception are the clearer as they are more interior, Arcana Coelestia 5920. From this, it follows that a man ought to be in internal things, Arcana Coelestia 1175, 4464.
With the man who is in love and charity, the interiors of the mind are actually elevated by the Lord, otherwise they would look downwards, Arcana Coelestia 6952, 6954, 10330. Influx and enlightenment out of heaven with man consist in an actual elevation of the interiors by the Lord, Arcana Coelestia 7816, 10330. Man is elevated when he rises towards spiritual things, Arcana Coelestia 9922. In proportion as a man is elevated from external towards interior things, he comes into light, and thus into intelligence; and this is meant by his being withdrawn from sensual things, as it was called by the ancients, Arcana Coelestia 6183, 6313. Elevation from the External towards interior things, is as from fog into light, Arcana Coelestia 4598.
Influx from the Lord is through the internal into the external man, Arcana Coelestia 1940, 5119. Interior things can flow into exterior, but not conversely; wherefore, there is a spiritual, and not a physical, influx, that is, an influx from the spiritual man into the natural, and not from the natural into the spiritual, Arcana Coelestia 3219, 5119, 5259, 5427, 5428, 5477, 6322, 9110. From the Internal, in which is peace, the Lord governs the External, in which is unrest, Arcana Coelestia 5396.
The Internal can see all things in the External, but not conversely, Arcana Coelestia 1914, 1953, 5427, 5428, 5477. When man lives in the world, he thinks from the Internal in the External, wherefore, his spiritual thought flows into natural thought, and in it presents itself naturally, Arcana Coelestia 3679. When a man thinks correctly, his thought is from the Internal or Spiritual in the External or Natural, Arcana Coelestia 9704, 9705, 9707. The external man thinks and wills according to its conjunction with the internal man, Arcana Coelestia 9702, 9703. There are interior and exterior thought; the quality of both, Arcana Coelestia 2515, 2552, 5127, 5141, 5168, 6007. During a man's life in the world, the thought and affection which are in the Internal are not perceived by him, but only those which are from it in the External, Arcana Coelestia 10236, 10240. In the other life, however, external things are removed, and the man is then let into his internals, Arcana Coelestia 8870. The quality of his internals then becomes manifest, Arcana Coelestia 1806, 1807.
The Internal produces the External, Arcana Coelestia 994, 995. The Internal then clothes itself with such things as enable it to produce an effect in the External, Arcana Coelestia 6275, 6284, 6299; through which it is then enabled to live in the External, Arcana Coelestia 1175, 6275. The Lord conjoins the internal or spiritual man to the external or natural man, when He regenerates the latter, Arcana Coelestia 1577, 1594, 1904, 1999. The external or natural man is then brought into order through the internal or spiritual man, and is subordinated, Arcana Coelestia 9708.
The External must be subordinated and subjected to the Internal, Arcana Coelestia 5077, 5125, 5128, 5786, 5947, 10272. The External was so created, as to serve the Internal, Arcana Coelestia 5947. The Internal must be the lord, and the External the minister and, in a certain respect, the servant, Arcana Coelestia 10471.
The External ought to be in correspondence with the Internal, that there may be conjunction, Arcana Coelestia 5427, 5428, 5477. What the quality of the External is when it corresponds with the Internal, and what when it does not correspond, Arcana Coelestia 3493, 5422, 5423, 5427, 5428, 5477, 5511. In the external man there are such things as correspond and agree with the internal, and there are such things as do not correspond and agree, Arcana Coelestia 1563, 1568.
The External takes its quality from the Internal, Arcana Coelestia 9912, 9921, 9922. How great the beauty of the external man is, when it is conjoined with the internal man, Arcana Coelestia 1590; and how great its deformity when it is not conjoined, Arcana Coelestia 1598. Love to the Lord and charity towards the neighbour conjoin the external man with the internal, Arcana Coelestia 1594. Unless the internal man is conjoined with the external man there is no fructification, Arcana Coelestia 3987.
Interior things successively flow into exterior things, even into the Outermost or Last, and in it they exist and subsist together, Arcana Coelestia 634, 6239, 9216. They not only flow in successively, but in the Ultimate they also form the Simultaneous; in what order, Arcana Coelestia 5897, 6451, 8603, 10099. All interior things are held together in connection by the First through the Last, Arcana Coelestia 9828. From this also there is strength and power in last or ultimate things, Arcana Coelestia 9836. Wherefore replies and revelations took place from the last or ultimate things, Arcana Coelestia 9905, 10548. Hence also the Ultimate or Last is more holy than the interior things, Arcana Coelestia 9824. In the Word, therefore, by the First and the Last are signified each and all things, and thus the whole, Arcana Coelestia 10044, 10329, 10335.
The internal man has been opened with him who is in Divine order, but closed with him who is not in Divine order, Arcana Coelestia 8513. There is no conjunction of heaven with the external man apart from the internal, Arcana Coelestia 9380. Evils and the falsities of evil close the internal man, and cause man to be only in external things, Arcana Coelestia 1587, 10492; especially evils from the love of self, Arcana Coelestia 1594. If the Divine is denied, the interiors are closed even to the Sensual which is the last or ultimate, Arcana Coelestia 6564. With the intelligent and learned of the world, who confirm themselves from the sciences against the things belonging to Heaven and the Church, the Internal is closed more than with such as are simple-minded, Arcana Coelestia 10492.
Since the internal man is in the light of heaven, and the external in the light of the world, therefore those who are in an External without an Internal, that is, those with whom the Internal has been closed, do not care for the internal things which belong to Heaven and the Church, Arcana Coelestia 4464, 4946. In the other life they cannot at all endure internal things, Arcana Coelestia 10694, 10701, 10707. They do not believe anything, Arcana Coelestia 10396, 10400, 10411, 10429. They love themselves and the world above all things, Arcana Coelestia 10407, 10412, 10420. Their interior things, that is, those which belong to thought and affection, are vile, filthy, and profane, however they may appear in externals, Arcana Coelestia 1182, 7046, 9705, 9707. The ideas of their thought are material, and not at all spiritual, Arcana Coelestia 10582. Further, how those are with whom the Internal which has respect to heaven has been closed, Arcana Coelestia 4459, 9709, 10284, 10286, 10429, 10472, 10492, 10602, 10683.
So far as the Internal, which is spiritual, is opened, so far truths and goods are multiplied; and so far as the Internal, which is spiritual, is closed, so far truths and goods disappear, Arcana Coelestia 4099. The Church is in the internal, spiritual man, because this is in heaven; and not in the external without it, Arcana Coelestia 10698. the external Church, consequently, is nothing with a man, apart from the internal Church, Arcana Coelestia 1795. External worship apart from internal worship is not worship, Arcana Coelestia 1094, 1175. Concerning those who are in the Internal of the Church, of worship, and of the Word; concerning those who are in an External in which is all Internal; and concerning those who are in an External apart from any Internal, Arcana Coelestia 10683. The External apart from the Internal is hard, Arcana Coelestia 10602.
The merely natural man is in hell, unless he becomes spiritual through regeneration, Arcana Coelestia 10156. All those who are in an External apart from an Internal, that is, with whom the spiritual Internal has been closed, are in hell, Arcana Coelestia 9128, 10483, 10489.
The interiors of a man are actually turned in accordance with his loves, Arcana Coelestia 10702. In each and all things there ought to be an Internal and all External, in order that they may subsist, Arcana Coelestia 9473.
Above and high, in the Word, signifies what is internal, Arcana Coelestia 1735, 2148, 4210, 4599. In the Word, consequently, what is high signifies what is interior, and what is low, what is exterior, Arcana Coelestia 3084.
47. FROM THE ARCANA COELESTIA.
Of the internal and the external with man.
It is known in the Christian world, that man has an internal and an external, or an internal man and an external man; but it is little known what is the quality of the one and of the other (n. 1889, 1940). The internal man is spiritual, and the external is natural (n. 978, 1015, 4459, 6309,9701-9709). How the internal man which is spiritual is formed to the image of heaven; and the external which is natural to the image of the world; and man was therefore called by the ancients a microcosm (n. 3628, 4523, 4524, 6057, 6314, 9706, 10156, 10472). Thus in man the spiritual world and natural world are conjoined (n. 6057, 10472). Thence man is such that he can look up towards heaven, and down towards the world (n. 7601, 7604, 7607). When he looks upwards, he is in the light of heaven and sees thence; but when he looks downwards, he is in the light of the world and sees thence (n. 3167, 10134). There is given with man a descent from the spiritual world into the natural (n. 3702, 4042).
The internal man which is spiritual, and the external man which is natural, are altogether distinct (n. 1999, 2018, 3691, 4459). The distinction is such as exists between cause and effect, and between prior and posterior, and there is no continuity (n. 3691, 4154, 5145, 5146, 5711, 6275, 6284, 6299, 6326, 6465, 8603, 10076, 10099, 10181). Consequently that the distinction is like that between heaven and the world, or between the spiritual and the natural (n. 4292, 5032, 5620, 5639). The interiors and exteriors of man are not continuous, but distinct according to degrees, and each degree is terminated (n. 3691, 4145, 5114, 6326, 6465, 8603, 10099). He who does not perceive the distinctions of the interiors and the exteriors of man according to degrees, and does not understand the quality of those degrees, cannot comprehend the internal and the external of man (n. 5146, 6465, 10099, 10181). The things of a higher degree are more perfect than those of a lower degree (n. 3405). There are three degrees in man answering to the three heavens (n. 4154).
The exteriors are more remote from the Divine with man, and therefore they are respectively obscure, and of a general nature (n. 6451). And they are also respectively not in order (n. 996, 3855). The interiors are more perfect, because nearer to the Divine (n. 5146, 5147). In the internal there are thousands and thousands of things, which in the external appear as one general thing (n. 5707). Thence thought and perception is clearer in proportion as it is interior (n. 5920). Hence it follows that man ought to be in internals (n. 1175, 4464).
The interiors of the mind, with the man who is in love and charity, are actually elevated by the Lord, and otherwise they would look downwards (n. 6952, 6954, 10330). Influx and enlightenment from heaven with man, is an actual elevation of the interiors by the Lord (n. 7816, 10330). Man is elevated when he advances to spiritual things (n. 9922). As far as man is elevated from externals towards interiors, so far he comes into light, consequently into intelligence; and this is what is meant by being withdrawn from sensual things, according to the saying of the ancients (n. 6183, 6313). Elevation from the external to the interiors, is like that from mist into light (n. 4598).
Influx from the Lord is through the internal man into the external (n. 1940, 5119). Interiors can flow into exteriors, but not the contrary; consequently that influx is spiritual and not physical, namely, from the spiritual man into the natural, and not from the natural man into the spiritual (n. 3219, 5119, 5259, 5427, 5428, 5477, 6322, 9109, 9110). The Lord from the internal, where there is peace, governs the external, where there is turbulence (n. 5396).
The internal can see all things in the external, but not the reverse (n. 1914, 1953, 5427, 5428, 5477). When man lives in the world, he thinks from the internal in the external, consequently his spiritual thought flows into his natural, and there presents itself naturally (n. 3679). When man thinks well, it is from the internal or spiritual in the external or natural (n. 9704, 9705, 9707). The external man thinks and wills according to conjunction with the internal (n. 9702, 9703). There is an interior and an exterior thought; the quality of the one and the other (n. 2515, 2552, 5127, 5141, 5168, 6007). The thought and affection in the internal is not perceived by man during his life in the world, but only that which is in the external therefrom (n. 10236, 10240). But in the other life externals are taken away, and man is then let into his own internals (n. 8870). It then becomes manifest what is the quality of his internals (n. 1806, 1807).
The internal produces the external (n. 994, 995). And the internal then invests itself with such things as enable it to produce its effects in the external (n. 6275, 6284, 6299); and by which it may live in the external (n. 1175, 6275). The Lord conjoins the internal or spiritual man to the external or natural man, when He regenerates him (n. 1577, 1594, 1904, 1999). The external or natural man is then reduced into order through the internal or spiritual man, and is subordinated (n. 9708).
The external must be subordinate and subject to the internal (n. 5077, 5125, 5128, 5786, 5947, 10272). The external is so created, that it may serve the internal (n. 5947). The internal must be lord, and the external its minister, and in a certain respect its servant (n. 10471).
The external ought to be in correspondence with the internal, that there may be conjunction (n. 5427, 5428, 5477). What the quality of the external is when it corresponds with the internal, and what when it does not correspond (n. 3493, 5422, 5423, 5427, 5428, 5477, 5511). In the external man there are things which correspond and agree with the internal, and there are things which do not correspond and agree (n. 1563, 1568).
The external has its quality from the internal (n. 9912, 9921, 9922). How great the beauty of the external man is, when it is conjoined with the internal (n. 1590). And how great its foulness when not conjoined (n. 1598). Love to the Lord and charity towards the neighbor conjoin the external man with the internal (n. 1594). Unless the internal man be conjoined with the external, there is no fructification (n. 3987).
The interiors successively flow into the exteriors, even into the extreme or ultimate, and they there exist and subsist together (n. 634, 6239, 9215, 9216). They not only flow in successively, but also form in the ultimate what is simultaneous, in what order (n. 5897, 6451, 8603, 10099). All the interiors are held in connection from the first, through the ultimate (n. 9828). Thence also in the ultimates are strength and power (n. 9836). And therefore responses and revelations were made from the ultimates (n. 9905, 10548). Thence also the ultimate is more holy than the interiors (n. 9824). Hence also in the Word, "first and last" signify all and every particular, thus the whole (n. 10044, 10329, 10335).
The internal man is open to him who is in Divine order, but shut to him who is not in Divine order (n. 8513). There is no conjunction of heaven with the external man without the internal (n. 9380). Evils and the falsities of evil shut the internal man, and cause man to be only in externals (n. 1587, 10492). Especially evils from the love of self (n. 1594). The interiors are shut even to the sensual, which is the ultimate, if the Divine is denied (n. 6564). With the intelligent and learned of the world, who from the sciences confirm themselves against the things of heaven and the church, the internal is shut more than with the simple (n. 10492).
Because the internal man is in the light of heaven, and the external in the light of the world, therefore they who are in the external without the internal, that is, they with whom the internal is shut, do not care for the internal things of heaven and the church (n. 4464, 4946). In the other life they cannot at all endure internal things (n. 10694, 10701, 10707). They believe nothing (n. 10396, 10400, 10411, 10429). They love themselves and the world above all things (n. 10407, 10412, 10420). Their interiors, or the things which are of their thought and affection, are vile, filthy, and profane, howsoever they may appear in externals (n. 1182, 7046, 9705, 9707). The ideas of their thought are material, and not at all spiritual (n. 10582). The quality further described of those whose internal that looks heavenward is shut (n. 4459, 9709, 10284, 10286, 10429, 10472, 10492, 10602, 10683).
So far as the internal, which is spiritual, is opened, so far truths and goods are multiplied; and so far as the internal, which is spiritual, is shut, so far truths and goods vanish (n. 4099). The church is in the internal spiritual man, because that is in heaven, and not in the external without it (n. 10698). Hence the external church with man is nothing without the internal (n. 1795). External worship without internal worship is no worship (n. 1094, 1175). Concerning those who are in the internal of the church, of worship, and of the Word; of those who are in the external in which is the internal; and of those who are in the external without the internal (n. 10683). The external without the internal is hard (n. 10683).
The merely natural man is in hell, unless he be made spiritual by regeneration (n. 10156). All who are in the external without the internal, or with whom the spiritual internal is shut, are in hell (n. 9128, 10483, 10489).
The interiors of man are actually turned according to his loves (n. 10702). In each and all things there must be an internal and an external that they may subsist (n. 9473).
"Above" and "high" in the Word, signifies the internal (n. 1725, 2148, 4210, 4599). Thence in the Word higher is interior, and lower is exterior (n. 3084).
47. (EX ARCANIS CAELESTIBUS)
