48、关于属世之物和属灵之物。如今世人几乎将一切都归于自然,几乎不归于神性,这是何等荒谬(3483节)。为何情况是这样(5116节)。而事实上,自然界中的每一个事物不仅从神性并通过灵界存在,还从神性并通过灵界持续存在(7758211节)。属天和属灵的神性事物终止于自然界,或说在自然界中获得自己最外在的边界(42404939节)。自然界是它们立于其上的基础(424056516275628462999216节)。属天、属灵和属世之物按次序互相跟随,彼此接替,并伴随着神性事物,因为它们来自神性(880493849399992100051001710068节)。属天事物是头,属灵事物是身体,属世事物是脚(49384939节)。它们也以类似它们互相跟随,彼此接替的次序而流入(49384939节)。最内层或第三层天堂的良善被称为属天的,中间或第二层天堂的良善被称为属灵的,最外层或第一层天堂的良善被称为属灵-属世的,由此可知何谓属天、属灵和属世(42794286493849399992100051001710068节);也可参看《天堂与地狱》一书(20-2829-40节)。

自然界的一切事物都通过灵界来自神性(5013节)。因此,属灵事物在一切属世事物里面,正如有效原因在结果里面(35625711节);或如同努力在动作里面(5173节),如同内在在外在里面(356253265711节)。由于原因是结果里面的基本要素,如同努力在动作里面,内在在外在里面;由此可知,属灵之物实际上,因而神性实际上就是属世之物里面的基本要素,而神性是一切事物的源头(2987-30029701-9709节)。属灵事物在属世事物中显现,这些显现是代表和对应(16322987-3002节)。因此,整个自然界是代表灵界,也就是天堂的一个舞台(275829993000493988489280节)。自然界中的一切事物都是照着目的按秩序和系列排列的(4104节)。这目的来自灵界,也就是天堂,因为目的,也就是功用在那里掌权(4546961103364540547038节)。人是以这种方式被造的:按秩序降至自然界的神性事物可在他里面被感知到(3702节)。

属世人凭自己天生就反对属灵人(39133928节)。因此,只要它们彼此反对,人就会发现思想属灵和属天事物让人厌烦,思想属世和物质事物则让人快乐(4096节)。他对天堂事物感到恶心,甚至一提到属灵事物就厌恶,包括经历的见证(50069109节)。纯属世人视属灵的良善和真理为奴仆(50135025节)。然而,属世人要服从并服侍属灵人(30195168节)。当属世人利用领悟力,尤其从圣言来寻求确认其情欲对象,或说将这对象合理化时,可以说属灵人就成了属世人的奴仆(3019501350255168节)。纯属世人在来世看上去是什么样,他们在那里的状态和命运如何(463046334940-495150325571节)。

仅仅出于属世的性情,而不是出于宗教行善的人不会被接入天堂(8772节)。

物质界的一切事物都经由灵性世界起源于神(5013)。因此,灵性存在于每个物质事物之中,就像致此原因存在于结果之中 (35625711),或者动力存在于动机之中(5173),或者内在存在于外在之中(356253265711)。由于原因是结果的基本要素,动力是动机的基本要素,内在是外在的基本要素,于是可得出结论,灵性,因而神性,就是万物之源 (2987-30029701-9709)。

48. What is earthly and what is spiritual. How wrong-headed it is that today's world attributes almost everything to the physical world and almost nothing to the Divine: 3483. Why this is the case (5116) when the fact is that absolutely everything in the physical world not only arose but also continues to exist from the Divine, through the agency of the spiritual world (775, 8211). Things divine, heavenly, and spiritual have their outermost boundaries in the physical world: 4240, 4939. The physical world is the foundation on which they stand: 4240, 5651, 6275, 6284, 6299, 9216. Heavenly, spiritual, and earthly realities follow and progress in proper sequence, and are accompanied by what is divine because they come from the Divine: 880, 4938, 4939, 9992, 10005, 10017, 10068. Heavenly realities act as the head [in the universal human], spiritual realities the torso, and earthly realities the legs and feet: 4938, 4939. One of these flows into the next in the same order just mentioned: 4938, 4939. The goodness of the central or third heaven is called "heavenly," the goodness of the intermediate or second heaven is called "spiritual," and the goodness of the outermost or first heaven is called "spiritual-earthly," which make it possible for us to know what the terms "heavenly," "spiritual," and "earthly" mean: 4279, 4286, 4938, 4939, 9992, 10005, 10017, 10068. [2] Everything in the physical world comes from the Divine through the spiritual world: 5013. So there is something spiritual within everything earthly, like an efficient cause within an effect (3562, 5711), like the impetus within motion (5173), and like an inner level within an outer level (3562, 5711, 5326); and since a cause is the essential element within an effect, the impetus is the essential element within a motion, and the inner level is the essential element within an outer level, it follows that what is spiritual is actually the essential element within what is earthly, and therefore so is the Divine, which is the source of all things (2987-3002, 9701-9709). Spiritual realities are manifested in what is earthly, and those manifestations are representations and correspondences: 1632, 2987-3002. Because of this, the whole physical world is a theater that portrays the spiritual world-that is, heaven: 2758, 2999, 3000, 4939, 8848, 9280. All things in the physical world are arranged in a design and sequence according to the purposes they serve: 4104. This [purposiveness] comes from the spiritual world (that is, heaven) because purposes, which are ways of being useful, are dominant there: 454, 696, 1103, 3645, 4054, 7038. We have been created in such a way that we perceive in ourselves divine things that are descending all the way into physical matter in accord with the divine design: 3702.

[3] If we are in accord with the divine design, we invariably have an inner level and an outer level. Our inner level is called "the spiritual level" or "the spiritual self," and our outer level is called "the earthly level" or "the earthly self": 978, 1015, 4459, 6309, 9701-9709. Our spiritual self is in heaven's light and our earthly self is in this world's light: 5965. Our earthly self cannot grasp anything on its own; its comprehension is a result of our spiritual self: 5286. Our earthly level is like a surface in which our deeper qualities see themselves; this is how thinking takes place: 5165. Our spiritual self produces thought in our earthly level and therefore thought in earthly terms, as long as our spiritual concerns come into our awareness down on the sensory level: 3679, 5165, 6284, 6299. The earthly plane is where what is spiritual has its outermost boundaries: 5651, 6275, 6284, 6299, 9216. Our spiritual self does not see anything in our earthly self unless our earthly self corresponds to our spiritual self: 3493, 3620, 3623. Our spiritual or inner self can see what is going on in our earthly or outer self, but not the reverse, because what is spiritual flows into what is earthly, but what is earthly does not flow into what is spiritual: 3219, 4667, 5119, 5259, 5427, 5428, 5477, 6322, 9110. On the basis of its own light, which is called earthly light, 1our earthly self does not know anything about God or heaven or life after death; and it does not believe anything it hears unless some spiritual illumination, which is light from heaven, flows into that [earthly] light: 8444.

[4] From birth and by nature, our earthly self is opposed to our spiritual self: 3913, 3928. As a result, as long as these selves remain opposed we find it irksome to think about spiritual and heavenly subjects but pleasant to think about earthly and bodily ones: 4096. We feel sick when we are faced with heavenly subjects-even when they are merely mentioned: 5006, 9109 (which include evidence from eyewitness experience). People who are entirely earthly regard anything that is spiritually good and true as a slave: 5013, 5025. Yet the earthly self should be subject to the spiritual self and should serve it: 3019, 5168. Our spiritual self can be said to be a slave to our earthly self when we use our intellect to garner justification, especially from the Word, for the kind of things that we crave: 3020, 5013, 5025, 5168. What merely earthly people look like in the other life, and what their state and destiny is there: 4630, 4633, 4940-4951, 5032, 5571.

[5] The truths that we have in the earthly self are called "factual" and "conceptual": 3293. In its natural state, our earthly self has a materialistic imagination and has drives like those of animals: 3020. When, however, the vision, action, and life of our earthly self depend on our inner or spiritual self, then we develop genuine thought and imagination: 3493, 5422, 5423, 5427, 5428, 5477, 5512.

[6] Relative to the contents of our spiritual self, the contents of our earthly self are very general (3513, 5707); and are therefore comparatively in the dark: (6686).

[7] Our earthly self has an inner and an outer layer: 3293, 3294, 3793, 5118, 5126, 5497, 5649. There is also a bridge between them: 4570, 9216. It is in and by means of our earthly self that our spiritual self is relieved of its burdens: 9572.

People who do good things solely because of the earthly disposition they were born with and not on the basis of religion are not accepted into heaven: 8772.

48. The Natural and the Spiritual. How wrong it is for the world at the present day, to attribute so much to nature, and so little to the Divine, Arcana Coelestia 3483. When, nevertheless, each and all things in nature not only have existed, but also continually subsist from the Divine, and indeed through the spiritual world, Arcana Coelestia 775, 8211. In everything natural, there is consequently something spiritual; even as in the effect there is the efficient cause, Arcana Coelestia 3562, 5711; or as in the motion there is the effort, Arcana Coelestia 5173; and as in the External there is the Internal, Arcana Coelestia 3562, 5326, 5711. And since the cause is the very essential in the effect, and in like manner the effort in the motion, and the Internal in the External; it follows from it, that the Spiritual is the very essential in the Natural, and consequently the Divine, from which [it is], Arcana Coelestia 2987-3002, 9701-9709. Spiritual things are exhibited in what is natural, and the things exhibited are representatives and correspondences, Arcana Coelestia 1632, 2987-3002. Hence it is that the whole of nature is a theatre representative of the spiritual world, that is, of heaven, Arcana Coelestia 2758, 2999, 3000, 4939, 8848, 9280. All things in nature are arranged in order and in a series according to ends, Arcana Coelestia 4101. This is due to the spiritual world, that is, to heaven, because ends which are uses, reign in it, Arcana Coelestia 454, 696, 1103, 3645, 4054, 7038. Man has been created so, that the Divine things which descend into nature, according to order, are perceived with him, Arcana Coelestia 3702.

With every man who is in Divine order, there is an Internal and an External; his Internal is called the Spiritual, or the spiritual man, and his External is called the Natural, or the natural man, Arcana Coelestia 978, 1015, 4459, 6309, 9701-9709. The spiritual man is in the light of heaven, and the natural man in the light of the world, Arcana Coelestia 5965. The natural man from himself can discern nothing afar off except from the Spiritual, Arcana Coelestia 5286. The Natural is a kind of face in which interior things behold themselves; and it is thus that man thinks, Arcana Coelestia 5165. The spiritual man thinks in the natural, and thus naturally, so far as a thing reaches his sensual perception, Arcana Coelestia 3679, 5165, 6284, 6299. The Natural is the plane in which the Spiritual terminates, Arcana Coelestia 5651, 6275, 6284, 6299, 9216. The Spiritual beholds nothing, unless the Natural corresponds, Arcana Coelestia 3493, 3620, 3623. The spiritual or internal man can see what is being transacted in the natural or external man; but not conversely, because the Spiritual flows into the Natural, and not the Natural into the Spiritual, Arcana Coelestia 3219, 4667, 5119, 5259, 5427, 5428, 5477, 6322, 9110. From his own light which is called the lumen of nature, the natural man knows nothing concerning God, nor concerning heaven, nor concerning a life after death; neither does he believe, if he hears respecting such things, unless spiritual light which is light from heaven, flows into that natural lumen, Arcana Coelestia 8944.

The natural man of itself, because from birth, is opposed to the spiritual man, Arcana Coelestia 3913, 3928. Wherefore, so long as they are in opposition, the man feels it irksome to think of spiritual and celestial things, but pleasant to think of natural and bodily things, Arcana Coelestia 4096. The things belonging to heaven, and also the bare mention of anything spiritual, sicken him; from experience, Arcana Coelestia 5006, 9109. Merely natural men look upon spiritual good and truth as [things of] service, Arcana Coelestia 5013, 5025. When nevertheless the natural man ought to be subordinated to the spiritual man, and to serve the latter, Arcana Coelestia 3019, 5168. The spiritual man is said to serve the natural, when the latter from the Intellectual acquires confirming proofs concerning such things as he covets, particularly from the Word, Arcana Coelestia 3019, 5013, 5025, 5168. How merely natural men appear in the other life, and what their state and lot there, Arcana Coelestia 4630, 4633, 4940-4952, 5032, 5571.

The truths which are in the natural man are called scientifics and knowledges, Arcana Coelestia 3293. The natural man, regarded in himself, has a material imagination, and affections like those which belong to the beasts, Arcana Coelestia 3020. But the genuine faculty of thought and imagination comes from the internal or spiritual man, when the natural man sees, acts, and lives from it, Arcana Coelestia 3493, 5422, 5423, 5427, 5428, 5477, 5511.

The things which are in the natural man, compared with those which are in the spiritual man, are respectively general, Arcana Coelestia 3513, 5707; and thus they are respectively obscure, Arcana Coelestia 6686.

There are with man an interior and an exterior Natural, Arcana Coelestia 3293, 3294, 3793, 5118, 5126, 5497, 5649. There is also an intermediate between those two, Arcana Coelestia 4570, 9216. The excretions of the spiritual man take place into the natural man, and are discharged through it, Arcana Coelestia 9572.

Those who do good merely from a natural disposition, and not from religion, are not received in heaven, Arcana Coelestia 8002, 8772.

48. Of the natural and the spiritual.

How perverse it is that the world at this day attributes so much to nature, and so little to the Divine (n. 3483). Why it is so (n. 5116). When nevertheless each and every particular in nature not only exists, but likewise continually subsists from the Divine, and through the spiritual world (n. 775, 8211). Divine, celestial, and spiritual things terminate in nature (n. 4240, 4939). Nature is the ultimate plane whereon they stand (n. 4240, 5651, 6275, 6284, 6299, 9216). Celestial, spiritual, and natural things follow and succeed each other in order; so do Divine things with them, because they are from the Divine (n. 880, 4938, 4939, 9992, 10005, 10017, 10068). Celestial things are the head, spiritual things the body, and natural things the feet (n. 4938, 4939). They also inflow in an order similar to that wherein they follow and succeed each other (n. 4938, 4939).

The good of the inmost or third heaven is called celestial, the good of the middle or second heaven is called spiritual, and the good of the ultimate or first heaven is called spiritual natural, whence it may be known what is the celestial, spiritual, and natural (n. 4279, 4286, 4938, 4939, 9992, 10005, 10017, 10068); and in (Heaven and Hell 20-28), (Heaven and Hell 29-40) the work on Heaven and Hell (n. 20-28-29-40).

All things of the natural world are from the Divine through the spiritual world (n. 5013). Consequently the spiritual is in every natural thing, just as the efficient cause is in the effect (n. 3562, 5711); or as effort is in motion (n. 5173), and as the internal is in the external (n. 3562, 5326, 5711). And since the cause is the very essential in the effect, as effort is in motion, and the internal in the external; hence it follows, that the spiritual, and consequently the Divine, is the very essential in the natural (n. 2987-3002, 9701-9709). Spiritual things are presented to view in the natural, and the things manifested are representatives and correspondences (n. 1632, 2987-3002). Hence all nature is a theater representative of the spiritual world, that is, of heaven (n. 2758, 2999, 3000, 4939, 8848, 9280). All things in nature are disposed in order and series according to ends (n. 4104). This is from the spiritual world, that is, from heaven, because ends, which are uses, reign there (n. 4 54, 696, 1103, 3645, 4054, 7038). Man is so created that Divine things descending according to order into nature, may be perceived in him (n. 3702).

With every man, who is in Divine order, there is an internal and an external, his internal is called the spiritual, or the spiritual man, and his external is called the natural, or the natural man (n. 978, 1015, 4459, 6309, 9701-9709). The spiritual man is in the light of heaven, and the natural man in the light of the world (n. 5965). The natural man can discern nothing from himself, but from the spiritual (n. 5286). The natural is like a face in which the interiors see themselves, and thus man thinks (n. 5165). The spiritual or internal man can see what is being done in the natural or external, but not the contrary, because the spiritual flows into the natural, and not the natural into the spiritual (n. 3219, 4667, 5119, 5259, 5427, 5428, 5477, 6322, 9109, 9110). The natural man from his own light, which is called the light [lumen] of nature, knows nothing concerning God, nor concerning heaven, nor concerning the life after death; neither does he believe, if he hears of such things, unless spiritual light, which is light from heaven, flows into that natural light [lumen] (n. 8944).

The natural man of himself, by birth, is opposite to the spiritual man (n. 3913, 3928). Therefore as long as they are opposite to each other, man feels it grievous to think of spiritual and celestial things, but delightful to think of natural and corporeal things (n. 4096). He nauseates the things of heaven, and even the bare mention of anything spiritual, from experience (n. 5006, 9109). Merely natural men regard spiritual good and truth as a servant (n. 5013, 5025). When nevertheless the natural man ought to be subordinate to the spiritual man, and serve him (n. 3019, 5168). The spiritual man is said to serve the natural, when the latter from the intellectual principle seeks confirmations of the objects of his concupiscence, particularly from the Word (n. 3019, 5013, 502 5, 5168). How merely natural men appear in another life, and what is the quality of their state and lot there (n. 4630, 4633, 4 940-4952, 5032, 5571).

The truths, which are in the natural man, are called scientifics and knowledges (n. 3293). The imagination of the natural man, when viewed in itself, is material, and his affections are like those of beasts (n. 3020). But there is a genuine thinking and imaginative principle from the internal or spiritual man, when the natural man sees, acts, and lives therefrom (n. 3493, 5422, 5423, 5427, 5428, 5477, 5510).

The things which are in the natural man, respectively to those which are in the spiritual man, are general (n. 3513, 5707); and consequently obscure (n. 6686).

There is an interior and an exterior natural with man (n. 3293, 3294, 3793, 5118, 5126, 5497, 5649). There is also a medium between them (n. 4570, 9216). The discharges of the spiritual man are made into the natural, and by it (n. 9572).

They who do good merely from a natural disposition, and not from religion, are not received in heaven (n. 8002, 8772).
