260. There are countless treasures hidden 1in the inner or spiritual meaning. In its inner meaning, the Word contains countless things that are beyond our grasp: 3085, 3086. They also cannot be explained: 1955. They are manifest only to angels and are understood only by them: 167. The inner meaning of the Word contains hidden treasures of heaven 2that have to do with the Lord and his kingdom in the heavens and on earth: 1, 2, 3, 4, 937. These treasures are not visible in the literal meaning: 937, 1502, 2161. Many of the things in the prophets that seem random come together coherently in a beautiful sequence in the inner meaning: 7153, 9022. There is not a single word in the literal meaning of the Word-not even the smallest letter 3-that can be lost without causing a break in the inner meaning, so this is why, in the Lord's divine providence, the Word has been so completely preserved, right down to every word and the tip of every letter: 7933. There are countless things within the details of the Word (6617, 6620, 8920), and in every word (1869). There are countless things in the Lord's Prayer and in its details (6619), and in the Ten Commandments, though their outer meaning contains things that were known to every people quite apart from any revelation (8862, 8902).

[2] In the Word, especially in the prophetic books, 4there are what seem to be paired expressions of the same idea, but one refers to what is good and the other to what is true-to what is heavenly, then, and to what is spiritual: 683, 707, 2516, 8339. Teachings about truth and teachings about goodness are wondrously joined to each other in the Word, but this joining is visible only to people who know about its inner meaning: 10554. Therefore in the Word as a whole and in its details there is a divine marriage and a heavenly marriage: 683, 793, 801, 2173, 2516, 2712, 5138, 7022. The divine marriage is the marriage of divine goodness and divine truth and is therefore the Lord, in whom alone this marriage exists: 3004, 3005, 3009, 4137, 5194, 5502, 6343, 7945, 8339, 9263, 9314. "Jesus" means divine goodness and "Christ" means divine truth, and together they mean the divine marriage in heaven, which is the marriage of divine goodness and divine truth: 3004, 3005, 3009. This marriage is in the details of the Word in its inner meaning, so the Lord is there with his divine goodness and divine truth: 5502. What is called the heavenly marriage is the marriage of goodness and truth that comes from the Lord in heaven and in the church: 2508, 2618, 2803, 3004, 3211, 3952, 6179. So in this respect the Word is a kind of heaven: 2173, 10126. Heaven is compared to a marriage in the Word because of the marriage of goodness and truth there: 2758, 3132, 4434, 4835.

[3] The inner meaning contains the genuine teachings of the church: 9025, 9430, 10400. People who understand the Word in its inner meaning know the true teachings of the church, because the inner meaning contains them: 9025, 9430, 10400. The inner reality of the Word is also the inner reality of the church, as well as the inner reality of worship: 10460. The Word is a body of teaching focused on love for the Lord and caring about our neighbor: 3419, 3420.

[4] The Word in its literal meaning is like a cloud, while in its inner meaning it is glory (preface to Genesis 18, 5922, 6343, in explanation of the statement that "the {w 219} is going come in the clouds of heaven, with glory" [Matthew 24:30; Mark 13:26; Luke 21:27]). Further, "clouds" in the Word means the Word in its literal meaning, and "glory" means the Word in its inner meaning: preface to Genesis 18, 4060, 4391, 5922, 6343, 6752, 8106, 8781, 9430, 10551, 10574. Compared to the contents of the inner meaning, the contents of the literal meaning are like the distorted images around a polished optical cylinder that actually present a beautiful image of a person on the cylinder: 51871. People who want and acknowledge only the literal meaning of the Word are represented in the other life by misshapen old women, while people who want and acknowledge the inner meaning as well are represented by beautifully dressed young women: 1774. The Word in its fullness is an image of heaven because the Word is divine truth, and divine truth is what makes heaven; and since heaven is like one individual, the Word is in this respect like an image of a person: 1871. (On the fact that heaven taken as a whole is like one individual, see 59-67 of the book Heaven and Hell, and on the fact that it is divine truth emanating from the Lord that makes heaven, see 7-12, 126-140, 200-212.) The inner meaning of the Word is presented to angels' view in a beautiful and pleasing way: 1767, 1768. The literal meaning is like a body, and the inner meaning is like the soul of that body: 8943. The life of the Word therefore comes from its inner meaning: 1405, 4857. The Word is pure in its inner meaning, although it does not seem to be so in its literal meaning: 2362, 2395. The contents of the Word's literal meaning are holy as a result of their inner meaning: 10126, 10276.

[5] There is also an inner meaning in the historical books of the Word, 6but it is deep within them: 4989. So just like the prophetic books, the historical books contain hidden treasures of heaven: 755, 1659, 1709, 2310, 2333. Angels take them spiritually rather than as history: 6884. Why the deep treasures in the historical books are less visible to us than the ones in the prophetic books: 2176, 6597.

1. The Latin word here translated "treasures hidden" is arcana, notable as the first word of the title of the first of Swedenborg's theological works, Arcana Coelestia, rendered as Secrets of Heaven in this edition. The word arcana is related to the Latin word arca, meaning a box or chest: the root arc- and the affix -ana together essentially signify "that which is within a box," that is, that which is concealed because of its value. (Compare the verbal relationship between the Latin word urbs, "a city," and urbanus, "the inhabitant of a city. He considered the Psalms to have some measure of the prophetic style as well. 5. Although one scholar (Potts 1888-1902, under "cylinder") understands this device to be a kaleidoscope, Swedenborg seems here to be referring to a device called an anamorphoscope, which produces an optical illusion called an anamorphosis. The cylinder is polished (as indicated here and in similar descriptions in White Horse 11[4]; Spiritual Experiences [= Swedenborg 1998-2013] 2164) and acts as a curved mirror; it is set next to a distorted drawing that is composed in such a way that the reflection of the drawing on the surface of the cylinder appears properly proportioned. 260. In the internal or spiritual sense of the Word there are innumerable arcana. The Word in its internal sense contains innumerable things which transcend the human comprehension, Arcana Coelestia 3085, 3086. It also contains things that cannot be explained, Arcana Coelestia 1965; which are represented only to angels, and understood by them, Arcana Coelestia 167. The internal sense of the Word contains arcana of heaven, which relate to the Lord and His kingdom in the heavens and on earth, Arcana Coelestia 1-4, 937. These arcana do not appear in the sense of the letter, Arcana Coelestia 937, 1502, 2161. Many things contained in the prophets, appear there as detached, which in the internal sense are connected in a beautiful continuous series, Arcana Coelestia 7153, 9022. Not a single expression, and not even a single iota can be omitted from the sense of the letter of the Word, without causing an interruption in the internal sense; wherefore, by the Lord's Divine Providence, the Word has been preserved entire, as to every word and every tittle, Arcana Coelestia 7933. Innumerable things are contained in each single thing of the Word, Arcana Coelestia 6617, 6620, 8920; and in every expression, Arcana Coelestia 1869. In the Word, and especially in its prophetical part, there are two expressions as it were of the same thing; but one of them has relation to good, and other to truth; thus one to what is spiritual and the other to what is celestial, Arcana Coelestia 683, 707, 2516, 8339. Goods and truths are conjoined in the Word in a wonderful manner, and this conjunction appears only to him who is acquainted with the internal sense, Arcana Coelestia 10554. In the Word, and in each single thing thereof, there is, consequently, the Divine marriage and also the heavenly marriage, Arcana Coelestia 683, 793, 801, 2173, 2516, 2712, 5138, 7022. The Divine Marriage is the marriage of the Divine Good and the Divine Truth, thus the Lord, in whom alone is that marriage, Arcana Coelestia 3004, 3005, 3009, 5138, 5194, 5502, 6343, 7945, 8339, 9260, 9314. By Jesus is signified the Divine Good, and by Christ the Divine Truth; and by both, the Divine Marriage in heaven, which is the marriage of the Divine Good and the Divine Truth, Arcana Coelestia 3004, 3005, 3009. This marriage is in each single thing of the Word, in its internal sense; and thus the Lord is in it, as to the Divine Good and the Divine Truth, Arcana Coelestia 5502. The marriage of good and truth from the Lord in heaven and the Church, is what is called the heavenly marriage, Arcana Coelestia 2508, 2618, 2803, 3004, 3211, 3952, 6179. Wherefore the Word in this respect is, as it were, heaven, Arcana Coelestia 2173, 10126. By virtue of the marriage of good and truth in the Word, heaven is compared in it to a marriage, Arcana Coelestia 2758, 3132, 4434, 4835.

The internal sense is the very doctrine of the Church, Arcana Coelestia 9025, 9430, 10400. Those who understand the Word according to the internal sense are acquainted with the very true doctrine of the Church, because the internal sense contains that doctrine, Arcana Coelestia 9025, 9430, 10400. The Internal of the Word is also the Internal of the Church, as well as the Internal of worship, Arcana Coelestia 10460. The Word is the doctrine of love to the Lord, and of charity towards the neighbour, Arcana Coelestia 3419, 3420.

The Word in the letter is as the cloud, and in the internal sense it is the glory, see the Preface to Chapter xviii of Genesis, also Arcana Coelestia 5922, 6343, where the words, "The Lord shall come in the clouds of heaven with glory," are explained. A cloud in the Word also signifies the Word in the sense of the letter, and glory the Word in the internal sense, see the Preface to Chapter xviii, of Genesis, also Arcana Coelestia 4060, 4391, 5922, 6343, 6752, 8106, 8781, 9430, 10551, 10574. The things which are in the sense of the letter, in respect to those which are in the internal sense, are like rude projections round a polished optical cylinder, by which nevertheless there is exhibited in the cylinder a beautiful image of a man, Arcana Coelestia 1871. Those who are in favour of and acknowledge only the sense of the letter of the Word, in the other life are represented by an ugly old woman; but those who at the same time are in favor of and acknowledge the internal sense, are represented by a virgin beautifully arrayed, Arcana Coelestia 1774. The Word in its whole aggregate is an image of heaven, because the Word is Divine Truth, and Divine Truth constitutes heaven; and since heaven has reference to one man, therefore the Word in this respect is, as it were, an image of man, Arcana Coelestia 1871. Heaven in the aggregate has reference to one man, as may be seen in the work on Heaven and Hell 59-67; and the Divine Truth which proceeds from the Lord constitutes heaven, Heaven and Hell 126-140, 200-212. The Word is presented beautifully and agreeably before the angels, Arcana Coelestia 1767, 1768. The sense of the letter is like the body, and the internal sense like the soul of that body, Arcana Coelestia 8943. The Word, consequently, has life by virtue of the internal sense, Arcana Coelestia 1405, 4857. In the internal sense the Word is pure, and it does not appear so in the sense of the letter, Arcana Coelestia 2362, 2395. Those things which are in the sense of the letter of the Word are holy from internal things, Arcana Coelestia 10126, 10728.

In the historical parts of the Word there is also an internal sense, but it is contained interiorly within them, Arcana Coelestia 4989. The historical parts of the Word thus contain arcana of heaven, just like the prophetical parts, Arcana Coelestia 755, 1659, 1709, 2310, 2333. The angels perceive these parts not historically, but spiritually, Arcana Coelestia 6884. The reason why the interior arcana which are contained in the historical parts, are less evident to a man than those contained in the prophetical parts, Arcana Coelestia 2176, 6597.

260. The internal or spiritual sense of the Word contains innumerable arcana.

The Word in its internal sense contains innumerable things, which exceed human comprehension (n. 3085, 3086). It also contains inexplicable things (n. 1965). Which are represented only to angels, and understood by them (n. 167). And in the precepts of the Decalogue; in the external sense of which, notwithstanding, some things are such as are known to every nation without revelation (n. 8867, 8900).

"Jesus" signifies the Divine good, and "Christ" the Divine truth; and both the Divine marriage in heaven, which is the marriage of the Divine good and the Divine truth (n. 3004, 3005, 3009). This marriage is in every part of the Word, in its internal sense; thus the Lord, as to the Divine good and the Divine truth, is in every part of the Word (n. 5502). The marriage of good and truth from the Lord in heaven and the church, is called the heavenly marriage (n. 2508, 2618, 2803, 3004, 3211, 3952, 6179). Therefore in this respect the Word is a kind of heaven (n. 2173, 10126). Heaven is compared in the Word to a marriage, on account of the marriage of good and truth therein (n. 2758, 3132, 4434[1-10], 4835).

The internal sense is the very doctrine of the church (n. 9025, 9430, 10400). They who understand the Word according to the internal sense, know the essential true doctrine of the church, inasmuch as the internal sense contains it (n. 9025 , 9430, 10400). The internal of the Word is also the internal of the church, and likewise the internal of worship (n. 10460). The Word is the doctrine of love to the Lord, and of charity towards the neighbor (n. 3419, 3420).

The Word in the letter is as a cloud, and in the internal sense it is glory, see the Preface to the 18th chapter of Genesis (n. 5922 , 6343), where the words, "The Lord shall come in the clouds of heaven with glory," are explained. "A cloud" in the Word signifies the Word in the sense of the letter, and "glory" signifies the Word in the internal sense, see the Preface to the 18th chapter of Genesis (n. 4060, 4391, 5922, 6343, 6752, 8106, 8781, 9430, 10551, 10574). Those things which are in the sense of the letter, respectively to those which are in the internal sense, are like rude projections round a polished optical cylinder, by which nevertheless is exhibited in the cylinder a beautiful image of a man (n. 1871). In the other life, they who only allow and acknowledge the sense of the letter of the Word, are represented by a deformed old woman; but they who allow and acknowledge the internal sense, together with the literal sense, are represented by a virgin beautifully clothed (n. 1774). The Word in its whole complex is an image of heaven, since the Word is the Divine truth, and the Divine truth makes heaven; and as heaven relates to one man, therefore the Word is in that respect as an image of man (n. 1871). Heaven in one complex relates to one man, may be seen in the work on Heaven and Hell (n. 59-67). And the Divine truth proceeding from the Lord makes heaven (n. 126-140, 200-212). The Word is beautifully and agreeably exhibited before the angels (n. 1767, 1768). The sense of the letter is as the body, and the internal sense, as the soul of that body (n. 8943). Thence the life of the Word is from its internal sense (n. 1405, 4857). The Word is pure in the internal sense, and does not appear so in the literal sense (n. 2362, 2395). The things which are in the sense of the letter of the Word are holy from the internal (n. 10126, 10728).

In the historical parts of the Word there is also an internal sense, but within them (n. 4989). Thus the historical as well as the prophetic parts of the Word contain arcana of heaven (n. 755, 1659, 1709, 2310, 2333). The angels do not perceive those historical things, but spiritually (n. 6884). The reason why the interior arcana which are in the historicals, are less evident to man than those that are in the propheticals (n. 2176, 6597).
